We I'd have to agree that there is a lot of silly elitism in the comics world, and several other hobbies. There are other good comics/manga outside of the what you know that are a good read. I love japanese manga, but I also have a soft spot for X-men, Batman and Spiderman. Now surely if you despised Marvel so much you must have missed the X-men and Spidey films, am I right? Of course I'm not, you to went to see those films, and gave Marvel some money.
I don't see this Marvel/Clamp biz as a surprise at all though, just the wheel rolling a little further down the manga hill. DC recent said they are gonna start publishing some manga, and Marvel are just replying to that by doing the same, or similar. They know that with Clamp they can reach male, and the ever reluctant female readers.
And why not, if Marvel and DC put out some good manga I'll buy it. I think Clamp working with Marvel would be good exposure for them in the u.s, for those who might have otherwise passed their work by to something else.
Whatever Clamp do I'll check it out if it's interesting enough. An X-men story would be nice.

I too am looking forward to that.
CLAMP doing the X-men...hmm. I'd buy it.
PS this is not the first time that Marvel has gone to Japan to get artists for short term projects. As a matter of fact Yoshitaka Amano (Creator of Vampire Hunter D) illustrated a 3 part limited series staring Wolverine and Elektra.
I am curious about what Marvel approached CLAMP with.

You can read Teen Titans and Gen 13 if you want that.

I beg to differ.
The Sandman is a masterpiece! |
I agree, but when Neil Gaiman did Sandman, he was a complete unknown. Same with Alan Moore and Swamp Thing, which I believe was also one of DC's worst sellers before he came along. And even though Daredevil and Ronin had already given him a following, The Dark Knight Returns was Frank Miller's breakthrough work. Watchmen is loosely based around the superheroes of a defuct publishing company, so it doesn't count.
I don't get why people are upset about this. CLAMP has done magical girl comics, which are basically superheroes for little girls in Japan. And X is about brooding teenagers with superpowers that try to save the world, all its missing is the spandex.

I love CLAMP too but if they put Kamui or Fuma in spandex I am going to scream.
But I don't mind if the girls do something for Marvel. I look forward to seeing it. CLAMP rocks. I'll buy anything they make.

Not to mention Kia Asamiya's stint as artist on X-men. Batman isn't the only western work he's done.

I hope they whatever they end up doing Kitty Pyrde and Lockheed are in it. Them in manga form done by CLAMP would be heaven for me.
Am I the only one who has read Wolverine: Snikt! by Tsutomu Nihei?
The art is GORGEOUS!
Even my manga hating coworker loves the art.
I really wish Blame! would be picked up and translated.
The Japanese style has slowly changed the way American comics are drawn. I can see the influences in how eyes and faces are now drawn in major titles compared to the past.

This sounds really cool. the only Clamp book I've read is Clover and I really liked the art and tech in that.
As for non-superhero Marvel books I recomend to the manga and maybe even shojo crowd, I really reccomend Runaways. It is about a bunch of teenage.. well.. runaways who take off after they discover a dark secret about their parents. Cebulski is the editor and I met him at Anime Next. I told him how much I loved the book and how I can't wait for each issue. He seemed just enthusiactic about it himself. He also was the editor of Tsutomu Nihei's Marvel miniseries Snikt! which basically took Wolverine and put in himin a Blame! lite universe. As you can tell from my icon, I love Blame!, so i really liked that.
Another good book is Y the Last Man over at DC's Vertigo. Actually, Vertigo has a lot of really mature (and not just conent) books that I think are some of the top examples of the American comic book artform. I'd say that a few of those rival some of the books in Japan. It's just that Japan has much more quantity. Anyway, Y the Last Man, which is by the same author as Runaways, is jsut a really good ongoing story that defies genre. There's some rather realistic sci fi, adventure, and even horror as it deals with a plauge that wipes out every man on the planet. Well, except for Yorick and his pet monkey Amphersand. It's a book that reminds me of some good manga in it's realism and apeal to all audiesnces and lack of a clear genre or description. Think of Alive, or Anne Freaks or Freesia which kinda of have the same feel.
Another good one is Fables which has an interesting look at fairy tales living in modern day New York.
Also, I suggest just about anything by Warren Ellis. Plentary is an excellent book. Though is does have superheros in it, it has fun by twisted them and making them more conspiracy oriented. The book is about three superpowered "archeologists of the unkown" as they discover secrets hidden from the public from Godzilla like monsters to an evil version of teh Fantastic Four.
Also by Ellis is Global Frequency which is about a covert organization of 1,001 specialists around the country who work "on the Global Frequency". When there is a crisis and the fate of the world is on the line, they get a call from higher ups and their comunications operator on how they can save the world. In one issue in Japan the specialist says he wants to quit after a couple of missions that were bad. one of which involved a number of school girls who jumped in front of a train and another case with a bunch of school kids who were sent to an island to kill each other. It was a minor reference, but it's nice to see Ellis reads and watches the same messed up manga and movies.

First off, I would love it if Kamui was wearing spandex. That would be the best. xD I'll also most likely buy it, since I'm a hopeless CLAMP fanatic.

I also look forward to that event. |
xD That would be great.

I love Marvel Comics, don't get me wrong (I've been a fan of X-Men for frickin' ever!) but CLAMP has other things they need to be working on. (Like, X for example? 2 years, still no new X)
Now they're just continuing their decline from interesting titles to generic been there done that crap. They've sold out and obviously only care for the money now-adays. |
I completely agree! They seriously need to get back to X! *shrug* I really don't know what they're doing...

Because people who "Draw anime" are animators, not manga-ka. You may think that there isn't much difference between the two, but there is a huge difference. The two go through completely different processes, and use different tools. Not to mention an animator may not be all to familar with drawing things out in frames and using talk bubbles and screen tones.

Marketng my dear freinds!!! Marvel is getting in the sandbox with the big kids, now. They need someone with a pretty fair amount of following to get them in. So pick one of the best...CLAMP. Shonen & Shoujo. CLAMP will bring with them a fairly diverse audience.

Actually, Miyu, it's the other way around.
Marvel and DC are still the top names. Yes, sales of their comic books have been taken away due to manga sales. However, their sales (as I understand from local shops) have been on a steady climb because of the radical popularity of all the (good or bad) superhero movies coming out recently. Marvel is, with Spider-man and X-men (two multi-billion dollar franchises) the 800-pound gorilla of comic books.
They're coming in to play with the little kids who're invading their sandbox.
