If I want to see violence for the sake of violence I would watch Ninja Scroll. |
You do know that [AS] wanted this as well but was outbid by spikeTV to get this series. And also I am not sure why you wouldn't consider it anime, it being done by GONZO one of the top animation (In terms of 3D animations) companies in Japan. Less not forget that there are plenty of anime that are made that have lots of ultra violence in theme, but on the same side of that coin there are plenty of shows that are that cute and cuddly anime boy love stuff. Anime is all sorts of shapes and grays.

Honestly I don't see why its not either. It was written by a Japanese manga artist and animated by Gonzo, what more do you need? I guess Hellsing ain't anime either cause it takes place in Britain... <_<
Personally I could care less where its animated, does it really matter? The more I hear people argue back and forth over whats anime and whats not cause of its origens makes my head hurt.

Afro Samurai is based on a Japanese doujin. In fact, it's not so much based on the doujin as the action figure based on the doujin.
The anime, however, is a collaboration between GONZO and Spike TV. If you classify "anime" as "from Japan", then Afro Samurai is only one half anime. GONZO is simply an animation studio. Technically, Lord of the Rings was made in New Zealand and the Matrix was made in Australia -- even still, everyone is happy to think of those as American.
So you really should think of it as an "American anime". The anime was produced specifically for the American/western audience. Samuel L Jackson's interest in the project was the main reason this anime was produced at all.
Unless you particularly like matching Japanese voices and martial arts, I wouldn't expect you'd find the Japanese dub to be any improvement.

This is starting to turn into a debate based on elitism now, not a fact of quality. A damn shame that something will get besmirched just based on the fact it's aimed at the Americans.
Some people just need to get of their high horses..

I don't think anyone can really argue that the animation isn't amazing, what I heard of the sound track was also great.

As nearly everyone seems to agree that it has great animation but a weak plot I would like to add my 2 cents and say that it had one of the greatest 1 liners I have seen in quite some time.

basing the plot off 1 ep is also very silly. However, its only 5 eps so it can't be deep anyways I guess. Guess we'll have to see if its really weak or not, regardless its a fun watch (kinda like burst angel)

I found it very interesting although it reminded me of Samurai Champloo for some reason. Samuel L. Jackson's VA was very good in my opinion too even though he only had three-four short lines in the first episode, I can't wait to hear him in the rest of the series.
