You mean the stuff like Tintin and Asterix (Yeah, I know that's probably ancient history, but that's probably a big step for me to consider JP manga to be reasonable because I had this exposure as a kid). As for your response on the anime, I'm guessing the French Canadians don't import much R2 and have the proper converters? I ask because where I live in California, there are Chinese, Indian and other communities where the multi-region/multi-TV format players are available and import foreign discs in the desired languages, and I wondered if the Quebecois did something similar... |

Well, I can tell you I know no one who owns an R2 player. Would it work anyway? France is using PAL, not NTSC like us.
It'd still be useless to most people though, because R1 american movie DVDs usually have a french audio track, so it's ok unless you want to watch french movies that aren't released here, or anime in french. But the language is quite different from France here, and although I've only seen one France-dubbed anime (Evangelion), I know that they usually use France-french instead of international-french. That's why I prefer watch anime in english, or in japanese. |

Not sure I get the question but Astérix and Tintin are just 2 types of BDs... French BDs covered a lot more themes than that and I remember (years ago) reading stuff like Prince Valiant, Alix, Bob Morane, Gaston Lagaffe and Michel Vaillant for instance and none had to do with superheroes... But if I ask an American to give me names for their comics? Apart from stuff like Archie or Betty & Veronica, it's mostly superheroes stuff they'll name (X-Men, Superman, Batman, etc.). Note I'm discussing 20+ years ago... I know the US has a comics market a bit more open to variety now... But we had this kind of variety a long long time ago (the first Tintin was published in early 1930s)...
They don't... since the anime culture in French is limited (I can only name Cardcaptor Sakura as one anime series that played recently on Quebec TV... leaving aside stuff like Sailor Moon... I don't even think Yu-Gi-Oh! plays in French) then how can the fans exist? Most fans of anime in Quebec are probably those who understand English and get introduced to anime through YTV (Gundam Wing, Escaflowne, InuYasha, Gundam Seed & Witch Hunter Robin having played on that particular channel). So therefore if/when they buy anime? They get the Japanese/English versions available in stores but not the French ones since, as I said, they are the wrong region to be played here and as another member also mentionned, it's most probably done in France slangs which is NOT something we enjoy here, as a rule... And contrary to what many believe, it's NOT the majority of Quebecers who speak English, far from it in fact... Outside Montreal, there is a huge component of unilingual French speakers... |

I have the Cowboy Bebop movie on DVD (haven't watched it yet) and I will probably give it a spin (short one) in French just for fun since it's got a French & English dub... But I must agree I do prefer Japanese dub/English subs. For one, French is too verbose a language and I'd rather spend less time reading and more time watching the video... and I've tried watching some French fansubs once and it was full of France slangs that had me scratching my head in confusion. The idea that I could waste good money on such a thing (I know it was a fansub... but I'm pretty sure an official version would be similar, aka with France-French slangs) scare me and therefore I buy my DVDs in English. |
