I love Last Exile and it is the next DVD set on my list of anime purchases.

That said, I wouldn't trust Hollywood to make a live-action anime title. Assuming the live-action EVA ever comes to play, I'll check it out, but I don't believe that Hollywood writers, producers, directors, executives, etc. will understand what made a Last Exile good and will simply slap something together that they think will make them money.

Um, Patrick is the writer of the Tokyoscope column in Animerica
and the co-author of Cruising the Anime City. He's also a professional journalist and columnist who gets to meet many of the big names in Japan. He's not just a fanboy who makes this stuff up on a DBZ website.

Doesn't make him any more reliable about the inner workings of Hollywood, nor does it make the information he's supposedly relaying any more credible.

The only way this would be even remotely credible was if there was something in Daily Variety or The Hollywood Reporter, or some sort of "development slate" announcement from the studio. And even then, the chances of seeing it ever come to fruition are miniscule.

But an announcement by an "anime jounralist" (and given the nature of Anime-sepcific print media, that's not exactly a designation that should carry a lot of prestige. He may not be a DBZ fanboy, but we ain't taking about pultizer prize winning stuff.) on his blog that someone at Gonzo told him something? That carries about as much weight as a helium filled balloon. And to further discredit it, Joel Silver has been "interested" in every comic, anime, *insert media here* property in the last decade. At least according to the net pundits, anyway. The truth of the matter? Who knows.

It makes him more reliable than a fat guy with an orange goatee.

Well there weren't any studios mentioned, just producers.

Macias also published two books, and wrote liner notes for countless dvds of Japanese films. He takes his work seriously.

And he managed to get at least one anime off the ground in the last decade, the Animatrix.

Hmmm... Maybe a bit late, but sometimes better late than never Razz

People start checking the source before making judgements, though some of us may already have made their judgements beforehand Wink

Taking a look at the article in question clearly shows that he is quoting an, and these are his words, gaijin employee of Gonzo.

Without examining Patrick Macias' credibility or not, let's look at the context. He's quoting someone, it's his personal blog (not a big press issue or something) and it was an informal setting. I don't have to mention the spin / chit chat / plain show-off potential of such settings... Wink

Anyway, for those to lazy to click and read...
Quote:
Arthur Smith, the gaijin from Gonzo did some nifty time travel trick and told me “Sam Jackson came to Japan as an invited guest for a special party we organised for Samurai 7 and Afro Samurai - and not only did he wear a katana, we gifted him one for the honor of his presence.” Seems Sam will be doing voices for Gonzo’s Afro Samurai, set for 2006.

“Joel Silver is not looking at Last Exile as far as I know...although that would be great. There is, however, a producer who works with New Line who is looking into two of our titles for live action adaptation...Last Exile and Burst Angel. And Speedgrapher has taken the interest of several TV companies but there is no solid interest from Hollywood yet...although early comments feel good.”

Either Patrick Macias edited it (I can't imagine the flack the guy is getting for this Rolling Eyes ) or the news article on ANN was wrong, so it isn't Joel Silver who's interested.

And as for that Burst Angel rumour, I smell gun powder and silicon implants... Rolling Eyes
