I commend China trying to expand it's anime market but I really don't see how you can expand it when the content of their anime will be very limited.

The most beautiful thing about japanese anime and manga is that they can be about almost anything for anyone. The japanese are not shy about tackling so many different subjects, that the only real similar thing to them are korean material.

In order for the chinese government to ever capture the interest of their youth they'll have to do a lot more than retell myths and legends. Get in touch with what the youth want, not what you think they need. However I don't see much chance of this happening.

But since the Governmnet is controlling the project, a lot of dirty Communist propoganda is expected to be spread through their animation. Hence my reservations to buy their stuff.

This is not the Cold War or the Cultural Revolution, people! You have to realize that modern Chinese youth are the audience the animation is geared towards and they are as hip and cultural savey as any teenager in the US or Japan. If the government supports an animated series about "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" they will watch it but probably not something on Lenin or Mao Zedong unless it's for History or Social Science class. Modern Chinese youths have been saturated with Western, Japanese, and Korean pop culture and though they may not agree with the political motives of the US and other western countries, people in Europe have the same sentaments. The government knows the kids won't buy into the whole "propoganda" thing and they know it's not going to sell overseas. I think the government will try to promot cultural based product instead, like series based on famous stories such as the "Three Kingdoms" (which is so popular that it has its fair share of anime and video game adoptions in Japan) and other legends and popular stories which will be much more welcomed in foreign countries. Sure, once in a while you can still find propoganda on the news promoting Communist ideals and the teaching of Communism in Social Science classes but every government promostes itself in some form or way; propoganda knows no boarders.

I recently got back from China and I can tell you that anime and manga are a big influence on Chinese youth culture. My girlfriend and I went to a Xinghua bookstore in Beijing, and they had an entire floor dedicated to children, teens and young adults. The bulk of the books that I saw were manga. I also saw bits of Naruto on Chinese TV as well as a schoolgirl anime that I couldn't place. NHK and TBS were two of the Japanese stations that aired in all four of the cities that we visited, as well as DW from Germany and Canal Plus from France. VCDs are the main video format in China. You can buy them on the streets, in a video store, or in a mall. They cost about 25 yuen (~$3.00) and they had a big selection of anime DVD's. I also saw several little anime shops as we traveled around. Chinese youth are into a lot of the same things that western kids are into. They just have easier access to it than we do.
