Getting some Dark Gathering vibes, though his probably won't be as gory and creepy. But I do like me some supernatural detective stories.

The first episode was a weird one in that I don't know what it is going for mood wise. At some point it seemed like it will be a body horror type show with some character development yet a bit later it seems about the fan service and jokes while making it feel not scary at all anymore.

I'm not sure what to make of this one either. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had gotten a platform because I generally like "Paranormal Investigation" type shows, but this one didn't seem to have a definite mood. It's not like I minded it, but it didn't scare me, and it wasn't funny...but it did succeed in keeping me watching to see what would happen next.

I sort of empathized with the main character - the fact that she loves to write and isn't finding success anymore came through loud and clear - but I'm not sure what she brings to the table in terms of being a ghost hunter. Well, I mean, I do know what she brings to the table. They were featured quite a bit. Just not sure what it has to do with ghost hunting. I can see why the co-worker would keep getting involved in situations, but I'm not sure what's supposed to be driving the main story here. Is it that the main character is going to be investigating the "Mysterious Disappearances" of the title because she's found something to write about? Anyway, I'll try it again to see how some of this stuff resolves or develops or if it does..

The pacing is a bit weird but it is seems like the adventure is going to consist of Sumireko being dragged into all kinds of supernatural occurences. In the case of episode 2 sensei seems to be using some type of power to have all troublemakers drop out from school in order to have it be peaceful. She is rather quick to use said power though and her devil shadow does not really predict a good outcome.

I didn't dislike episode 1, but I liked episode 2 more. The addition of that little brat Oto gave the show some needed oomph chemistry wise IMHO, and the conflict was more like a real mystery than a random curse attack. It was also good seeing the MC play a more active role without being obsessed, or at least cursed/ obsessed. I'm not crazy about the fact that out of all the different side effects she could have gotten from a curse, she got the power to appear young since her unhealthy obsession with reliving her youth is what caused the curse in the first place. The ability doesn't seem very useful in a fight and is kind of a mixed message in terms of character growth. Plus it's not like anime needs more adults pretending to be kids. Why not just give her increased curse resistance? But whatevs. Still liked it.

Episode 6

I guess the real Mysterious Disappearances are of posters interested in commenting on this show... In any case, I'm enjoying it a lot. Yep, that's all I came here to say. Bye!

I am still watching, as the weeks go on the mysteries stay solid and the main story is getting pretty interesting. I could do without all the fanservice though.

Episode 12 (Finale)

Well, this show didn't inspire much chatter. I'm rating it Good. It was a bit of an odd duck but that was part of its charm for me. I feel like it resolved in a satisfying way. There is more source material to adapt and I'd be very happy if that happens.

I also ended up liking it quite a bit. I have issues with the fanservice and how out of place it felt at times but the mysteries were interesting and pretty varied. I like that the cases were solved in various ways and that there was even a situation that was not even a case but a mostly harmless meeting of sorts. The characters were also pretty decent.

As for seeing more, I would like to say yes but given that the season ends with an anime only ending that seems to be wildly different from the manga (from what I have been told) that seems unlikely.

I didn't particularly care about any of the mysteries themselves. I did enjoy the sullen teenager/new stepmom relationship between Oto and Sumireko

Every anime season I put a show or two aside figuring I'll come back to them during the off week between seasons. Sometimes I even follow through. I put this one on my try again later list after the episode where the girl was being viciously bullied because her grandmother was making her clothes for her at home. I was already watching the melancholy Bartender and Tonari No Yokai, the sharp and bitter Yatagarasu, the pathos heavy Jellyfish Can't Swim at Night, the sociopaths R Us Fable, and the enjoyment laced with life's bittersweet realities remake of Spice and Wolf not to mention giving the very dark Parasyte another chance after people kept bringing it up on the Kaiju #8 board. My mildly bummed out button was getting pushed too many times a week.

Anyway, that's a long winded way of saying that this week I've started watching Mysterious Disappearances again, and I have to say that the mood of the show has changed since Oto started reluctantly bonding with Apartment Wife. It's brought out a new side of Apartment Wife too, who I found a little boring before. The whole mooning over lost youth thing has been mined and remined in anime, and they seemed to be relying on the Bustzilla thing to compensate for a lack of personality. But she's come to life.

The old man is a pretty interesting side character too.

LACK OF PERSONALITY???

You mangy cur. She's got TONS. of personality! Meaty, beaty, big and bouncy personality! All I can say is you are fortunate that the practise of duelling was made illegal. Wink

But seriously, I'm glad you decided to revisit this show and it sounds like you won't regret it. By the way, can somebody who is a bit better versed in Japanese insults explain to me the meaning of "apartment wife?" Oto-chan obviously uses it as a derogatory term but I don't quite get it. A lot of wives must live in apartments in Tokyo so I don't get the nuance.

I found it a little strange. Such that I thought that it was being a more female POV show, but then it would just creep on its female characters. It would have all sorts of emotional stuff, and then have the guy say he wanted to look at her in bath or something. Considering the power she gained, it had quite a bit of her body changing size and development, and it kind of felt icky either way of her body being larger or being so small clothing fell off.

And for some reason they decided to have all the kids visit the porn pool in the second to last episode. In a series with a lot of body shifting, they decided to have a pool/swimsuit episode with the young characters and set it in the most infamous location for such a thing.

I think that it sent mixed messages, where the deep stuff maybe could be a tad edgy, I guess we needed a Grave of the Fireflies reveal, and just made me feel like it doesn't respect the characters, so why should I.
