Thanks to all for the comments & criticisms, all duly noted and appreciated. I hope I didn't agitate too many people about the comments on US comics & cartoons, and it certainly should not have been a blanket generalization. My dissolution with comics was back when I was in my early teens; a decade later I'm discovering a lot of things that I missed out on and finding new stuff to enjoy.

I have no defense for the bootlegs I have on the shelves--currently FLCL, Trigun, and the original series of Kanon that was never released in the US. Everything else you see there is officially licensed R1. You'll notice I've stopped with the Naruto box sets at set #7--this is as far as I got while watching downloads in college, and I have no intention on buying any more. Attention, Viz: we're even. And I do have all of Cowboy Bebop Remix as well as the film, second row from the bottom behind the Hinatabokko figure, underneath Paranoia Agent, next to Ai Yori Aoshi.

I've never understood the appeal to One Piece personally. My friend loved the show, and made me watch a good 30 episodes or more, and I never got in to it. In fact, I found it to be a chore to sit through at times, as entire episodes were sometimes the prelude to a fight or just banter tossed between two characters until someone did their special move. It was as artificial, and unimpressive as anything I've watched. Consider how horrible the dub was supposed to be, I'm really glad I never saw that version, as the fansubs were awful enough.
There is nothing you can do,really, for the people who don't like watching through these long and winding shonen series.I don't blame you guy's,I got about 200 eps in before macular degeneration set in. Laughing I couldn't imagine another 160+ more. Shocked

I think I recall you,and quite a few others that were put off by the hand drawn look of the show.I enjoy the style. It brings me back to the old days.A lot of new anime,IMO,rely on too many computer assisted effects (like lighting, tween, cell shading and such) while One Piece (still a computer assisted show) keeps to the cheaper effects and the flat color/watercolor look.Manga come to life, like it should be.Anyway, like I had said,One Piece is like a huge RPG,but you got to level up a while before you get to the good parts. If you don't like leveling up,you are not going to have any fun with this one.Art direction aside. The appeal of One Piece (beside pirates) is Luffy's value of friendship,in which he proves himself to his crew, many times in the series.

It's very simple to understand, driverstart - he likes the characters and/or character designs.

When you're a fan, you own merchandise. Simple as that. I paid a handsome price for a cel of Mihoshi, not only from the Tenchi Muyo OAV, but from episode 4: "Mihoshi Falls From the Land of Stars" which is her first appearance in the franchise. The cel is from the first scene where she appears in her trademark sleeveless pink blouse and tan khakis.

It's the iconic image of her character - my all-time favorite character - and I own it. That's one of the major draws of figurines, posters, busts, action figures, and cels.

Other draws include the different interpretations of characters (a Bome rendition of Belldandy, for instance, is pretty different from a Max Factory Belldandy) or non-canon renditions of characters that pose them in a fun and uncommon setting (my buddy G-man has a Rei and Asuka in military garb pair, for instance).

Sometimes, enthusiasm goes beyond watching or reading. Sometimes, it's cosplay. Sometimes, it's fanart or fanfiction. And sometimes, it's merchandise collections. Welcome to fandom.

Alright then. I can get the reason why now. Heck, I'm a fanfiction writer for Pokemon, Naruto and Love Hina stories. I've also done fanarts of Case Closed, The Drifting Classroom, 20th Century Boys, and Negima characters for extra credit in my art class.

For merchandise, I just never gotten into stuff like that. I only have Shuffle posters, a Beck guitar pick, School Rumble magnets, and Mushishi postcards because they came free with my DVDs. Though at one point I saw the Cardcaptor Sakura Book of Clow on a shelf somewhere and wished I had the money to buy it. As for figurines, I'm not interested. Doesn't mean I wouldn't take one if offered for free.

I understand fandom since I'm in it, but I'm not sucked in enough to buy merchandise if it isn't DVDs or manga.

The one thing that reallys bugs me on the release is that it is the [AS] cut, rather than removing the few bleeps & such.

Considering the remix box is on sale this week, I am being tempted. However, in my case, it is because from the start I decided the series was too pretty to own in anything less than HD (not saying to mess with the aspect ratio, just bump up the resolution) ... and I'm sticking to it.

Commenting on the guy's framed pictures, he has a cel painting from Ah! My Goddess movie and layout sheet & Background painting of Chobits. By reading the writings on layout sheet, the scene belongs to episode 10, cut 36 & 38. Each cut is only 3 seconds and 0 frames long. I wonder he knows about that. Nah..he bought it with ripped off price because it's pretty.

Just to chime in on the One Piece discussion, what has acted as a major factor in my enjoyment of it, even from those first few episodes, was the persona of Luffy himself. Simply put, he's unlike any other fictional character I've come across, especially in the realm of shounen series. He doesn't spend all his time angsting over some perceived rivalry *cough*Naruto*cough*, he's not a mindless slave to the "imma get stronger" mentality, he's not some walking cliche of overexuberant stupidity, he's just...Luffy. He has a seemingly eternal lightheartedness and whimsy about him, even at those times when he's intensely angry and in the midst of kicking someone's ass (and he has to be one of the genuinely scariest characters I've ever come across when he's good and roused). He has an intensely pure idea of the concept of friendship that defines him to his very core; those whom he has labeled his friends literally define his entire life. In the same vein, his own definition of piracy as a lifelong adventure toward the next horizon drives him above all else. Plus...he's just freakin' funny. Very Happy I'll admit that I absolutely hated the art style of the series the first time I saw it (to the point that, thankfully, I never bothered to check out the 4Kids abomination), but after I gave the first few FUNi episodes a shot, I started to look past it; at this point, I couldn't imagine the series looking any other way. I'm some 180 episodes in now, and the show as a whole is the most genuinely fun adventure I've ever come across. I'm very much looking forward to the next 180 episodes.

Also, I don't know if I'm more scared by that guy's figurine collection...or by the sort of wife who'd be tolerant of it. Yikes. Shocked

(To be honest, I don't understand the appeal of buying figurines or other extraneous merchandise either. I'm a fan myself, but I prefer spending my money in ways that allow me to directly exercise my fandom, instead of winding up with nothing more than a plastic object that has to be dusted every week. I have enough Lego models fillling that role as-is. :p)

Speaking as a wife, I couldn't care less if my husband collects figurines. He has his hobbies, I have mine.

I'm middle of the road about One Piece. I've enjoyed some of the shorter arcs and the movies. But one reason I fell in love with anime was that the stories were finite. American comics/cartoons have no end, but anime had a story arc that I could look forward to seeing from beginning to end (I loved Babylon 5 for this reason too).

I got bored with Naruto, with Bleach, and with One Piece because they lack this. I'm just not interested in never-ending shounen (or shoujo).

For the person who didn't understand not wanting to sink 14+ hours into trying some series... If you've spent 14 hours watching LOTR or Harry Potter you've pretty much seen the whole thing. As for books, I only have to spend a half hour with one to know whether or not it's worth continuing or tossing. I'm sure not going to invest a week's worth of evenings and god knows how much money on something just because someone thinks it gets better eventually. My experience says that while this happens on occasion (Fruits Basket, 12 Kingdoms), it still doesn't take that long to get to a part I enjoy (vol 3 and episode 5-6, respectively).

I collect figures although since I am a girl I don't collect the scantily clad female ones. Smile

You are right it is completely pointless they just sit there. But I like the way they look on my shelf. It's just another way for me to show I am a fan of a series/character. I mean knickknacks are pretty pointless too but people collect those also. I guess it is the same sort of thing. Hey I buy DVDs of a series I like and most of those I've only watched once. Some people would argue that was pointless too.

I love Dragonball.
Far more than DBZ even with Vegita & his nice ass. (when they took the time to draw it well & not half fast)
It captures that Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn kids having their adventures before the reality of adulthood sets in. Pure, free, wild, innocent, savage.
Luffy is, in his way, a mix of Goku, (pure), but one can't get away from Krillin, maybe because it is the same VA. Luffy is pure, but not quite as innocent as Goku, though not as worldly as Krillin was at such a young age (porn mags? I know 12 yr old boys who would kill to get their hands on them, forget using them as barter). Goku's innocence bordered on stupidity & throughout the series there was a difference made in Goku's (& Chichi's) speech patterns vs the other characters, particularly Bulma & Vegita. Luffy retains a purity hardened by a few harsh realities.
So I do love Dragonball & see a lot of that fun, free spirit in One Piece. Goku setting nyobo in the dirt & that purple ninja coming down-the joke is obvious a mile away, but it is funny. One Piece works on this same level. Naruto never really captured that for me. Maybe Naruto took over the DBZ fighting spirit, but it has never touched the freewheeling fun of One Piece. Very few anime I've seen have really succeeded like DB (up to the first Piccalo story) in being pure fun.

I assume you're talking subs, since Krillin's dub VA does Usopp, not Luffy. I could never watch the DBZ sub, mainly because of Goku's sub voice (just didn't sound right). And I've never bought the Dragonball DVDs, so I've only seen it on Toonami.

From the encyclopedia on this site.
Quote:
Mayumi Tanaka as Krillin

So, yeah, I'm talking Japanese.
Ussop is Kappei Yamaguchi. InuYasha. Ranma. L.
Sanji is Hiroaki Hirata. Sha Goyjo/Saiyuki.
Chopper is...argh, I don't track chicks... Pikachu (But it really shows. Is it Ikue Ohtani? Chopper squeaks like Pikachu sometimes).

Do you know what you're missing not listening to DBZ in Japanese? So what if Goku's voiced by some senior citizen gal? (50? 60 I forget how old she was at the time) Ryo Horikawa is Vegita. Shun Andromeda. Hirotaka Suzuoki was Tenshinhan. Dragon Shiryu. Sho Hayami is Zarbon. Tenzen/Basilisk, Aizen/Bleach, Muraki/Yami no Matsuei, Naoe/Mirage of Blaze. Ryusei Nakai is Frieza. Mataichi/Requiem from the Darkness. Hiromo Tsuru (Bulma) & Ryo Horikawa have been in a few titles together. Tohru Furuya is Yamcha. Tuxedo Mask. Seiya.

And you are so missing too much not listening to One Piece in Japanese. Not only the main cast, the villains are loaded down with great Japanese players. Off the top of my head, I believe Capt. Kuro was Hyoga Cygnus. I'm pretty sure Buggy is Shigeru Chiba & the delivery is absolutely wild. He goes from normal to wild in a heartbeat. But he's also Raditz, Kuwabara, & Don Kanonji. Arlong is Jyrouta Kosugi (Can they make a yaoi title without his being the evil seme?) He was also big Zenki (Yamaguchi was little Zenki). Toshiyuki Morikawa is Enel (HATE Enel.) Otherwise he's Tousen/Bleach, Naraku/InuYasha, D-Boy/Tekkaman Blade & he does a lot of BL cds. Ryotaru Okiayu is Kaku. (Besides a lot of BL cds) Akram/Haruka. (mind blanking out. K/Gravi? Dark/DNAngel?). Tomokazu Seki is the guy with the bird in that arc...begins with an L...Anyway, he's also Shuichi/Gravitation, Ken/Weiss Kreuz, Ignius/Wedding Peach, Yzak/Gundam Seed, Dee/Fake, Mickey/Area 88. (lots of stuff I know but I'm not sure how popular they are. He's in a lot of stuff with the rest of Weiss-Shinichiro Miki, Takehito Koyasu & Hiro Yuuki. Like Star Ocean & Tokyo Underground.) Kazuki Yao is Jango & Frankie. Also Dark Schneider/Bastard, Pluie/Wedding Peach, the dude with the tank in Soryuden, I forget who he was in Death Note. Takeshi Kusao is that stupid rebel leader in the too-long Alabaster arc, but was also Trunks/DBZ, Krad/DNAngel, Saionji/Revolutionary Girl Utena & Kougaiji/Saiyuki. Wasn't Crocodile Dabura/DBZ?

There are so many fun performances in One Piece. Chiba was on something, I swear. Buggy is too much fun.

Because of its slow nature, DBZ isn't exactly a show I intend to marathon again anytime in the near future. Maybe someday (I've already bought the first two seasons, just haven't watched them yet). So that's another reason I haven't watched the sub yet.

As for One Piece, I've seen every subbed episode and it is a good sub, but I do prefer the Funimation dub. The humor works better since its my native language, and Oda picked out all the Strawhat voices, so I know they fit the creator's vision (something we can rarely be sure of for manga adaptations in either sub or dub version).

I'm a guy and I don't collect the scantily clad female ones either. I just don't find cartoons or little statues appealing in that way, so I go for the more artistic ones. I have a Lain and Rakka (Haibane Renmei) figure, and a Eureka figure, who does have her usual short dress, so that could be considered somewhat more fanservice oriented.

You're right about figures, and I have other collectibles that are equally worthless, aside from showing the things I'm a fan of what I love, as well as serving as aesthetic filler. It's really up to the individual in whether it's worth it or not. The benefits are negligible, but for some, those small benefits are all the reason they need to purchase figures or collectibles. They just sit there, yes, but they are generally aesthetically pleasing, and showcase to people a bit about you as a person.
