Yeah, there are a lot of scary people who dress up at cons, but there's a lot of nice (and nice-looking) people who cosplay, too. Anime smile; I hope not *all* cosplayers scare you. And anyway, sometimes it's fun to dress up because you get to ham it up in front of hundreds of cameras.

I would think that costumes based on mecha would be difficult to make. (although I wouldn't know, I haven't gotten the opportunity or money to go to a con yet)

Well that's about 99% of the costumes I know. I can sew... and I'm a boy.

Why'd ya think I asked if anyone knew any easy ones? It's cool if you can sew, in fact, I wish I could sew, but, the spirit hasn't moved my mom for her to teach me. Maybe I'll break her sewing machine............again. Surprised

Well, here's some advice.
1) You can learn how to sew on your own. I recommend just getting some scrap cloth and practice sewing in lines, curves, etc. Then try to make something like a pillow or something. If you get into problems, call your mom and ask her how to get past that hang up. Before you know it, you'll be sewing just as well as her.
For clothes though, there's some things you need to know, like hemming, etc. If you're mom isn't willing to help you out with that, you can check online and see if there's any beginners guides to help you out. Or, you can go to a thrift store and buy a cheap $1 shirt and take it apart, just to see what they did. As for costumes, it might help for the first few to find a costume that you can use a pattern for, just to help you get started.

2) I know some community colleges offer home ec classes (now known as Consumer and Family Studies or something. ;p). If you checked around, maybe you could find one. Also, if you checked the rec guide for your town, sometimes they'll have craft classes that will teach you how to sew.

Anime smile Hope that helps. It's a pain in the ass to learn, but you'll be able to make a wider range of costumes once you learn how to sew.

Then again, a lot of costumes can be put together just with a lot of mall combing. With a little creativity, you can get a lot of good costumes with just a bit of good store searching. Good luck!

Damn, you beat me in sewing, I'm a girl and can't even sew a straight line. Laughing

I always wanted to go to a con, but there is none near my city, and my parents won't let me. If I ever went to a con (which would be a cold day in hell), I want to cosplay as Sango in her regular outfit, or as Kaoru Kamiya, or as Kagura, or as blah blah blah blah. Smile

The largest trip I've ever made to go to a Con was 8 hours.
