Wow. I've seen plenty of mistakes on other game shows, reality-based or not, over the years, and this one is up there on my list. So utterly confident, and yet so utterly wrong (yet funny). As for Ben, I'm wondering if he wished after that answer that he had picked up a different contestant.
EDIT: The third sentence in this post ("So utterly...") actually reflects on the contestant's delivery of the answer, not Ben's face. Just wanted to clear that up. Last edited by NGE1113 on Fri May 04, 2007 12:27 am; edited 1 time in total |

You don't think it was so utterly fake? I mean, c'mon. He said it with perfect pronunciation and total confidence. The look from the driver wasn't surprise, it was pause for effect. Am I really the only person who thinks this was rigged to be, pause for effect, humorous? I don't have many skills quite honestly, but one skill I do have is being able to sniff out a script, and this clip comes across as though it was rehearsed more than truly spontaneous. If you bother to look at the history of these types of shows, it's littered with examples of the networks using scripts instead of running an actual contest. |

To clear things up, that quote of mine that you used was intended for the contestant. It was the fact that his answer was said in an extremely confident manner, despite the fact that there was no chance at all of it being right. It was those two things combined that made the contestant's answer funny for me.
Anyways, concerning the look Ben gave the camera: I rewatched that clip closely a couple more times, and I'll concede it to you, 10¥. That did resemble more of a forced look than anything else. |

Yeah, we're on the same page about the contestant NGE, I knew who you were referring to. Sorry if I was too vague about that. The one show that looked real to me and that I actually enjoyed was "The Amazing Race". I just could not find any hidden script in that show. Eventually I started to really get into it, but the only way for me to watch it on my own schedule was to rent the DVD's. Unfortunately they only released Season 1 and Season 7 (both are excellent examples of kick-ass quality unscripted entertainment in my view) and then stopped altogether. I eventually found most of the other seasons on some torrent but they weren't as good as #1 and #7.

Sounds plausable except why? To give a good laugh to the small minority of people who actually know what it means? Idunno, I think maybe after the guy happened to say it and somebody who worked on the show pointed out what it meant, they edited it a bit to add to the comedic effect for anyone who got the joke. |

Oh, I agree with you that "the look" was completely and utterly fake. BUT!!?? Was "the look" recorded at the same time as the wrong answer or was it recorded and edited in later for "the effect"? |

That's what I think happened- it is a fair mistake (hentai does sound like henna)... chances are the old guy is around an otaku-type (co-worker or relative), so he's used to hearing the word/ other asian words, and just got mixed up in his head. (My mom did something similar recently... she told me she was looking for an Asian horror movie named Midori Memory. No such film exists, I figured out she meant Momento Mori. Does she know 'Midori' is Japanese for green? No. But with all the anime going through this house, it's not surprising she managed to pluck a smiliar-sounding Japanese word from the ethers.) EDIT: Ya know, rewatching the clip... it looks like 'the look' happened when he said the answer... if you look out the window, you see the nose of a parked taxi as he passes a truck during 'the look'... it's still there (farther back now, of course) when he actually tells the guy he's wrong. Whether or not that's a 'did he really say 'anime porn' look or a 'did he really mess that up' look, is the question. |
