I'm not the person you're responding to, but I think it goes deeper than that - it's always possible to create a work in a new medium with the same plot, characters, themes, tone, and general vibe as the original work. Some works, such as avant-garde experimentations with form like House of Leaves, might be pointless and somewhat difficult to adapt (as in, a lot of what makes it special is impossible to translate into a new medium), but those core elements are still possible to adapt, just a major challenge to pull off well. For a less-extreme example, I don't know how you'd adapt any of Haruki Murakami's works to the screen - I don't know how you'd translate the magical realist elements, I don't know how you'd choose what to keep and what to cut for runtime and pacing, and I especially don't know how you'd maintain the same vibe as the original - but that doesn't make it impossible, it just means there would be a myriad of challenges to overcome in doing so. |
