The OAVs were made a while ago and were quite interesting. Then I read that James Cameron, the director of "Titanic", was interested in making a full film.

I know the manga series ended so he has plenty of material to use and I read that he was getting the script written and was interested in a special camera to film with.

It even has a US distributor ready to go (20th Century Fox). It has almost been a year since I heard anymore news and was curious if anybody knew what was going on with this anime.

I beg you, read the manga and forget about the OAV. As for the live-action movie...well, I don't have much hope in it, since the story of GUNNM (I hate that name change) is incredibly long and deep thus very difficult to squeeze into a two-hour film (the OAV is such a "good" example), not to mention its numerous biblical references may cause other problems.

don't bother, get the manga instead.

just like "Angel Sacntuary", it just stops mid story. it feels more like an finished series than an OAV. not worth your time

I agree, the GUNNM manga is excellent even without the new chapters LAST STAND. Btw, watch the animated OVAs for the fluidity in the fight scenes, very nice. Also the cels are lovely too but expensive to buy since Rick bought most of them a decade ago. Evil or Very Mad

I have been keeping an eye out for any information on the purported live-action version, but I have seen nothing new beyond an occasionial mention (sometimes even beyond purely anime-related sources) that James Cameron was working on it. I do know that the Battle Angel OVA was pulled off the market last summer because he has exclusive North American distribution rights for that title, or some such thing.

And the OVA, while not great, wasn't that bad (except for the dub - not one of ADV's better efforts). Its two episodes aren't supposed to be the whole story, just segments of the first two GNs. Word that I heard years ago claimed that more episodes were supposed to be made but either the first ones didn't sell well enough or the financing fell through.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this one if it ever happens. James Cameron has already done a project not too far removed from this (the Dark Angel TV series) so I'm sure he can pull it off. Yeah, they'd have to condense the story a lot and cut out large bits, but that wouldn't be as hard to do with Battle Angel/Gunnm as with some other titles.

I saw the dub YEARS ago. But the creator or so called boss of Battle Angel reminds of Egon from Ghost Busters. I also remembered she was found in a junkyard

I quite liked the OAV, lent it to a few friends and they liked it too, thought it was not too complicated and pretty much straight to the point. I've never really read any Manga so I guess I might be biased against anime like this if I had.

Thought the concept was cool and I liked the fight scenes, but yeah the dubbing sucks.

As far as a live action version, I'm not a fan of converting anime into live-action, I think if its good enough as an Anime then it should remain as Animation. I have faith in James Cameron though being a big fan of his films (maybe not the biggest fan of Titanic) so I reckon it could have some potential.

Alright, first of all quit trying to sound elitist and call the North American version of the manga GUNNM - its name is Battle Angel Alita and the author approved that name. Originally the title on the original manga is GUNNM: Battle Angel, the reason for that the name was changed is because GUNNM (pronounced "Gahn-mu") means 'Gun Dream'. Something that you wouldn't know unless it was noted in the books somewhere.

Now as for the OVA - don't even bother comparing it to the manga. Originally there were supposed to be more parts to it (I can't seem to recall if they were made and not released here, or if production fell through) but the original intent of the OVA was not to tell the story that is in the manga (it would likely take a full 26+ episode show to do that) but to give a condensed version of the "major" plot points in the first few mangas.

As a final side note - here's a link to Yukito Kishiro's website

Battle Angel Alita is 3 words while "Gunnm" is 1 . Lazy people like me choose the easy way out by using 1 instead of 3 Smile.

I hope more eps of Gunnm will be released sometime soon. Just like Mezzo Forte then the series did.

From reading comments made by Cameron he has said it won't be just one movie that it will have sequels.

edit just found his comment.

"Moviehole.net reports that James Cameron wants to direct a live action Battle Angel Alita movie. Cameron says, "The issue is will it be the next film, or will it be the one after the next film? That's really all there is to it at this point. We've done a tremendous amount of design for the film, we're fine-tuning the script, it's just a matter of time." As for the movie itself, "Motorball might find its way more into the second film - I definitely want to do more than one film. I want to create a world and a character that can go through at least one more film, possibly more. And that's not just for the classic financial reasons, it's just that I think there's a possibility for a real mythology here, so I feel that this is a good canvas to do something big that's got more scope." UK Anime and The Z Review are also reporting." I enjoyed the original Battle Angel Alita. It left me feeling like so much more could be done with it. It'll be interesting to see what comes of this one."
