You're right, they're not points... they're truths. When someone uses excuses like those, there's really no other way to say it once you stop beating around the bush. Nobody really says it better than Greg Ayres, as he has many panes on the subject, as well as Crispin Freeman and many others. Long video series ahead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cV0b8bEaT4I |

My family's the type that doesn't want to go overseas.
You should take into consideration what's going on in Southeast Asia (excluding the big nations like Singapore and Hongkong). |

If you want to be technical, i.e. can it hold up against a fact check, Greg Ayres does not say it well at all. A [insert adj representing about 5-25%] portion of what he presents is dated, incorrect (mostly and especially applies to anything about the R2 market), comes across as FUD, or can be picked apart as flawed in some other way. There is some good information in it and some stuff is well presented, but it could definitely be better. The real problem is he's mostly preaching to the choir. (Which leaves the question of "Well then, who does it better?" to which the answer is, I'm trying to remember who said it and when. Nabeshin at AX this year taking people to task was very good though.) |

Plenty of manga in local comic shops and bookstores, at least in Metro Manila. Kind of pricey compared to cost of living here, but availability's not the major problem. I could see the problem for the rest of the country, though. For R1 DVDs I use PARC Online. |

Well, face it, though. Not all those manga or anime in Japan would have the privilege of being available outside Japan.
The only manga or light novels I'd be devoted to buying right now is Shakugan no Shana and/or Toaru Majutsu no Index. The only distributor of the light novels for Shana is kind enough to abandon the series and Index might not reach outside Japan. |

Not so good points. COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT! That is what downloading stuff of the internet means. That is the crime you are doing. You are not stealing, you are infringing on copyright. You are not a thief, you are a ..... whatever they call someone who breaks copyrights. Again, copyright infringement is not stealing, just as burglary is not arson. |

Either or, it's still a good point. If you're for the whole scanlation thing and don't consider it theft because the court has decided to call it that when the mangaka is losing money because of your ignorant self righteous views, then whatever, we get it. You don't like buying their books, you like leaching. Go ahead, keep on sucking it. Suck it dry. |

Yeah. Wishing horrible, potentially fatal diseases on people is a real constructive way to combat piracy. I can understand their displeasure (at least in regards to domestic Japanese piracy; the Japanese have no need for scans for obvious reasons), but this whole "I wish they were dead" bit isn't helping.

Politely asking hasn't done anything. Scolding people hasn't done anything. Obviously wishing disease and instant death* isn't going to do anything but it isn't going to hurt either. So what does it really matter as long as they get the point across that they don't like it? *Note that the whole struck by lightning was also attached with a comment that effectively says "cancer doesn't prevent them from uploading more". |

I think they are just fine to have ill wishes for people if they desire, but what if that person is also one who purchases a lot of their materials as well? This is hardly unlikely. Pirates are commonly also purchasers. There are some pirates who are pure leechers but there are many who are not.
I suppose they imagine that they can convince such people with vitriol that they don't want them to do this but more likely they will also accomplish just causing people to lose interest in them altogether. If you don't believe in the circular reasoning of "unauthorized copying is theft because unauthorized copying is theft" and don't believe in "right to profit" or whatever else people are tossing about this isn't convincing to you, it just creates an atmosphere of dreading this particular author/artist. Before someone says "well people dread because it makes them feel guilty" does someone who hates homosexuals and preaches against that make homosexuals feel guilty? No, they make them feel uncomfortable. They are annoyed by the constant attack of those who feel they are immoral. It creates distance between the people, regardless of whether actual guilt is felt. That isn't to say there might not be some people who feel guilty. Most of us don't like displeasing others either. But everyone makes a choice based on what is of more value to them. Perhaps they take this occasion to understand your feelings, but rather than doing what you want and buying more from you, instead they just drop uploading, drop downloading, and drop buying as well. The greatest enemy of media is obscurity, not copyright infringement. It is people not caring about it, not people caring enough that they want to share it with others spending hours translating/encoding/etc. |

I am pretty sure the guy who just uploaded all of Black Lagoon doesn't buy Black Lagoon. The people who actually buy things and pirate, only pirate the new stuff that isn't available where they live.
