I've always seen people complaing about stereotypical things aimed towards anime. There is another side to this that I have noticed and it is from the anime fans. Mainly from the younger people. Something stereotypical that comes from anime fans is when a anime fan sees an Asian person an automatically thinks she/he likes anime and is very intelligent in the subject. I just thought this might be interesting to discuss; a sort of "Flipped" disscusion.

my dad knows i like anime and sometimes when he sees an asian person he says "my son likes anime" i hate it when he does that

yeah, this is a big steortype i suppose. i mean i caught myself doing it once, like i said in another thread before, a japanese girl i know was in the room and i was watching EoE, and i was kind of expecting some kind of response to it. i didn't ask her if she likes it, i didn't expect her to be a fan or know a lot about it. but i was expecting some acknowledgement maybe. only because they see(as in it's around them a lot) it a lot over there and and im sure she's not blind to the fact that anime is one of the most popular things coming from japan over here.

A lot of the casual anime "fans" (people who watch stuff like Digimon, Mon Cole Knights, Pokemon, DBZ, Sailor Moon, or whatever was shown on TV or is mainstream) assume that I like that kind of stuff too. Then I start talking about some obscure title or start to delve deep into the finer details of the plots of some anime and they shrink away.
A lot of people in Singapore are like that. They've been exposed to only the mainstream stuff and think all anime are like that. Most of them have not even heard of GITS or Akira or know who Miyazaki is. Ya, and they thought Warriors of the Wind was an American cartoon done Japanese style. Ya, that's the otaku in me complaining about the general population here. |

Well, where I live, just about every damn asian is an anime fan, myself included (obviously). I could probably name some anime fan stereotypes. I'll put down a list and you tell me if it's true for you. And this is for true fans, mind you, not casual viewers who just watch the subbed trash on Adult Swim (just my opinion, don't have a cow on me.)
1. Pocky...one word is all you need. 2. They read NewType-USA or some other anime magazine. 3. Has at least one boxed set of a series. 4. Sometimes spends the wee hours of the morning watching freshly downloaded fansubs. 5. Thinks they know EVERYTHING about anime. (Yea, you know you guys exist. You all think you have degrees in Japanimationology or some trash like that.) I'm just kidding, I have no clue what's stereotypical about anime fans because frankly, I don't care nor do I know many fans out here who are overt about their fandom. I think partying and boozing it up is more important to them, rather than wondering if the Japanese foreign exchange student will jump at the chance to explain the philosophical significance of Evangelion. |

Answers: 1. No, too expensive. But I buy a pack occassionally. 2. No, too expensive. I'd rather spend that money on more anime. But I'd love to have a collection of them. 3. Yes, tons and tons of them. 4. No, I BUY all my anime. Blame that on the lousy 56kbps dial-up connection. 5. No. I'm not as stuck up as to think like that. Thank you.

I remember how everyone used to joke around about my ethnicity; being the only Asian person in the midst of Caucasian people, I suppose I was some sort of exotic guy from the Far East per se. They joked around, assuming that I drive a Honda Civic, always wear jeans, like close-fitting shirts, watched anime or hentai, etc. All good fun, considering I fit more than half of their hilarious(but true) and sometimes ridiculous criteria. *lol*
Anyway, many Asian people do watch anime(like me). It's more of a cultural thing since "cute" or "kawaii" is real big among the Asian culture; hence many people watch anime for cute girls(like Mahoro) or chibi-fied cuteness. Big stereotype but I don't mind. |

Then you get the Japan is the best country in the world I wish I was japanese crowd. ie the Japanese=godlike.

Well, to me, the japanese ARE godlike. Haha. No, not really, but I love them anyways. They bring me so much entertainment that brightens up my otherwise boring and mundane existence. From video games, to anime and manga, to j-pop, Japan's stuff keeps me happeh. Heheh. But you know what I despise about fandom in America? The cosplayers that SHOULDN'T cosplay. You know who I'm talking about. Not to be mean, but girls who have Majin Buu's build should not be cramming themselves into revealing costumes like Faye Valentine's clothes. It has the same effect of trying to cram a watermelon into a thimble. If you have that kind of confidence, more power to you, but please... PLEASE think about aesthetics before you attempt to look like an anime character who's a waif of a girl. |

I ran into a old friend awhile back and told him I was into anime now. His reaction: isn't that, like, nekkid cartoons? Though, where I live, most people think of hentai or Pokemon. It becomes very annoying at times.

1 - I've never, ever understood the correlation between Pocky and Anime. Never have, never will. As a snack it's not even that great. 2 - Occasionally I'd go to a friend's house and look at his Newtype-JPN collection, or I'd read a bunch of old ones that I have lying around... even though Newtype-USA sucks (that has to be the worst right-to-left printing ever... but right-to-left printing sucks in english anyway). 3 - It's how I got into it... but I'd rather sell them now =P 4 - Depends on the quality of the series and when it's released =P 5 - I don't really care. I like what I like and I'd rather go into tirades about themes and character than talk about seiyuu, production studios and director/producer stuff. I've also acknowledged that a lot of stuff I like, a lot of people don't, so whatever.
It seems like all my interests have people like that. It's kinda annoying. It was so bad when I played FFXI, everyone bowed down to Japanese players even though some of them were horrible. Gah, just thinking about it gets me angry =P |

The correlation is there because it appears in a bunch of series. The most notable recent appearance that comes off the top of my head is Onegai Teacher. Nobody eats Pocky as much as Mizuho does I think it's pretty good myself, and it's fun to sample all the different flavors.

My favorite flavor is from the decorer series, the strawberry one. It's like a mini-cake-on-a-stick or something. Nummy. The younger anime fans often seem to blindly believe all anime is superior to all American cartoons. This tends to irritate me as there are some really good American cartoons, and some really piss-poor anime out there.
