Oh Team Rakushun is down by two?
Well Cross Game was basically the best series of the season and gained a lot of deserved hype in said season here on ANN. And no, Wakaba really is winning based on votes from people who haven't seen 12 kingdoms if you go back and count. |

I'm curious will anyone admit to trying to force a tie with their last minute votes. I find the flurry of last minute votes suspicious to say the least, and I did it myself.
Oh and can anyone say erratic explosion of confusion because that's what just happened to this thread. I think it does add to the excitement of things though. What a nail biter that match was! |

Well regardless of who won, it was pretty damn interesting battle, glad I got a few blows in. And at least if it was a loss it was to Wakaba.
So wait, who won, or was there really a tie? That would be hilarious. |

Round 4 Group C is now closed.
With multiple people sneaking in at literally the last minute, we came very near to having another tie. But then we ended up with 21 votes, so the breakdown is. . . A-29: Kisuke Urahara cleanly wins over Tomoyo Daidouji 16-5. A-30: Wakaba Tsukishima edges out Rakashun 11-10 in a tense, down-to-the-last-minute teeth-gnasher. Though I had picked Rakushun to win, I am at least satisfied that A-30 came down to a single-vote spread. Any bigger split in that match would have been a farce, as the characters are just that close in relative merit. On the downside, assembling another video clip for Wakaba is going to be much harder than it would have been for Rakushun, as her appearances beyond the ones shown so far are brief and widely-scattered over 46 later episodes. (And we will actually be facing an even worse problem with that in Group D if a certain character wins this coming round.) And I'll be very curious to see how many of the top scorers in the minigame picked A-30 right. I know that one wrecked my bracket. 
BTW, for those predicting that whoever wins A-29 is going to get swept away by the winner of A-30: I wouldn't count on that. Kisuke represents a wholly different kind of match-up problem for Wakaba, as unlike Rakushun he is very strong in some aspects of being a supporting character that Wakaba is not. But that's an argument for three weeks down the road - and one I look forward to following! I have a couple more clips to double-check and then the next round will go up. |

Awwwwwwr Rakushun was my favorite to win
 Oh well you can't win em all. Kind of sad I missed the last of the argument I had something to say about some of the latter points raised. But then I baught Starcraft 2 and have regressed to my early teens when games actually had to be good to sell. I have been getting precious little sleep  .

I don't think there was a vote change. I think it was Epic urging someone to change their vote to Rakushun, and farichada thought it was a vote change in favor of that character. Regardless, I am pleased with this round even though the character I didn't vote for won. I am glad that people are getting excited about these tournaments again, and I hope that the future rounds will have just as much energy and excitement as this one did. |

Round 4 Group D is now closed.
Results can be found here. This is it - the last of the individual Group weeks, people. After this we'll be pairing Groups up for the Group Finals. But that's a week in the future. This group is regarded by some as being on the weak side, but I still think there's some potential here and I am firmly convinced that we'll wind up with a worthy Final Four contestant out of this. (And I, of course, have my own ideas on who this should be. . .) I do think we have at least one, and possibly two interesting matches here. We'll have have a nail-biter like in the previous three rounds? Let's see! Kuu, Haibane Renmei vs. Tanda, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit No question here Tanda get's my vote. He has a far deeper personality than Kuu. His was a constant support all the way through the series too. Without him I think the main characters would have probably ended up dead. He is the quiet sort certainly but I don't remember him being timid about speaking up when something needed to be said. He just dousn't waffle In contrast I found Kuu to be bland she was a role model certainly but she seemed to exist almost soley to fill her role. Never having any real development of her own.
Group D-30 Ami Kawashima, Toradora! vs. Akio Furukawa, Clannad franchise Changing my vote to Ami Kawashima for the reasons explained in a later post and due to the convincing arguments of others

I only see one match here that I have a close call making a decision on while the other I'm dead set on a commitment. And considering Tomoyo's elimination has pretty much killed my chances of victory for the mini-game, I can care less about it now.
Match D-29: Tanda (Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit) The big advantage Tanda has over Kuu in this match is that he's given quite a bit more depth and has more interaction with the main characters compared to Kuu. While his scenes lack the impact of Kuu's big scene in the middle of Haibane Renmei, it's quite possible for any of the Haibane, outside of major ones Rakka and Reki, to have fulfilled her role in her place and it wouldn't have changed much. Still, I wouldn't have any issues with either of these two characters advancing to the Group Finals. Match D-30: Akio Furukawa (Clannad franchise) Compared to the last few matches Ami's been involved in, Akio's not exactly a pushover so I could possibly see this match being somewhat competitive as well, though I can't imagine neither of these two surviving their next round match as their developments are too much on the formulaic side. But at any rate, let me go into my reasoning for my vote. Just like the last match with Akio, I completely detest both anime titles involved here and fail to comprehend why fans are drawn to them. But having to vote off one of two evils, I'm gonna have to go with Ami. Beyond questionable developments with her character which I'm not allowed to bring up thanks to earlier moderation from Key and abunai, I find that Ami as a character is way too archetypal. She starts off as the typical two-faced rival found in romantic comedies whose main role is to take attention from the male lead (Ryuuji) away from the female lead (Taiga). As the series progresses, said character develops from Two-Faced Rival to Jerk With a Heart of Gold pushing the two leads into their relationship, with said development considered by some as the biggest letdown of the series as it feels more like standard romantic comedy plot formula instead of being subverted. Akio's role as carefree, yet responsible parent is a bit archetypal as well. But his support to Nagisa and Tomoya, spoiler[as well as caring for their child after Nagisa's death and Tomoya becoming a drunkard], shows a better sense of depth to his character that somewhat distances him from a simple designation. |

Match D-29: Tanda gets my vote here, despite having seen Haibane Renmei and not having seen Moribito. Other's arguments to this point, and me not considering Kuu to be that great has lead me to make this decision.
Match D-30: Before I make my choice here, I feel I should go into a fair bit of depth for both characters, because having seen both series many, many times I feel for once I can make compelling arguments for both sides, and that the matchup is quite strong. Firstly, I'll start with Toradora's Kawashima Ami. Ami starts off being presented as a not entirely stereotyped airhead model character, but is soon revealed to have a dual personality when it suits her. This barely scratches the surface of her character, though, as she develops and spends more time around people her own age. She has come from being a working model to the school, whereupon she has something of a bloated ego and feels that she can treat anyone basically how she wants. She has a facade which she constantly wears around herself like a cloak, both to get what she wants out of people and to hide her true self from them for fear of persecution. The first phase of her development is that, with Ryuuji's guidance and Taiga as a role model, she discovers that people will accept her for who she is if she is her honest self around them. It doesn't take long for her to realise that she can't manipulate Ryuuji however she wants, and while she has something of a love/hate relationship with Taiga, this develops into a friendship as the series progresses. Her development itself is critical because it enables her to in turn support the main cast. She realises that her mature facade is in itself quite immature thanks to Ryuuji, and starts to realise that she genuinely likes him and has real feelings for him. At the same time, she begins to observe the interactions of pretty much everyone, and acts as something of a mediator and counselor, especially towards Ryuuji, because she thinks that Ryuuji is not being honest with himself. I think on some level she feels that she is offering to help him in the same way he helped her. Though her attitude with Minori is more confrontational, it is her words that made Minori truly reflect on her emotions seriously and contemplate what it is that she wants. This doesn't always go down too well (the spoiler[fist fight between Ami was so well lead into and to me really hits on the essence of their collective frustrations with their inability to act on their feelings]) but in the end, it is Ami supporting Minori as well, as she spoiler[confesses to Ryuuji at roughly the same time as he comes to realise that his relationship with Taiga is something he cherishes and can't let go of.] Ami's influence can be somewhat summed up as an "observer". She is quite subtle and cunning with her support of the lead characters, and isn't always honest with her true feelings; but at the same time she has an undeniably strong influence on the other characters in the series (including the other non-main characters, such as Kihara). I remember when the discussion thread was going while Toradora aired, and it was always Ami's comments and interactions that provoked the most thought in my opinion (crackers like "Are your feelings of guilt gone now?"). She, for me, stole the scenes whenever she was on screen, and had some fiercely funny scenes in there to boot. For example. In her summer house while they are cleaning, she pretends to be naked in the shower when Ryuuji accidentally stumbles in. As he is about to leave, she grabs his arm, and while he gets crazy embarrassed she reveals that she is fully clothed and just cleaning the shower. Ryuuji then walks out and hilariously describes the situation to Taiga, who goes upstairs to scold Ami. By this point, however, she genuinely IS naked and showering. The result: comedy gold. Another line of hers that had me snorting laughter was after an argument with Minori, when she walked off saying "Talking to you is like having a period." "Trying not to cry" for entirely the opposite reason.. Anyways it shouldn't come as any surprise to anyone who knows me that I'm voting for Kawashima Ami; but hopefully you won't just brush this off as me being a Toradora fanboy (which I am). Because I am a Clannad AS fanboy as well, and Akio deserves his say. Akio is hilarious in the first series, but in my opinion the depth of his character and his level of support only really raises its head towards the end of the first season (and is much more present in the second). His part in the story was the source of a lot of the choking memories of my own past for me, and his strength in some of the most crushing moments of the series is enviable. His influence on Tomoyo can't be understated. It was he who pushed Tomoyo to his limits, to see how far he would go to unify with spoiler[Nagisa in marriage. After Nagisa's death, he and Sanae looked after ushio even as Tomoyo broke and gave into despair. They, together, brought him back from alcohol, tobacco and gambling addiction and showed him that there was still reason to go on.] You could say that this was a dual incentive by Akio and Sanae, but Akio was strong enough to take on Sanae's burden as well; and the moment when he told Sanae to let the pain of spoiler[losing their daughter go, that he would accept it all and that she could let go,] was one of the most gut-wrenching scenes of the entire series. His tale about a young Nagisa, and his spoiler[desperate attempts to save her after their negligent parentry,] was also gripping; and when he took on this more serious role (compared to his former, more light-hearted, outgoing exterior) was when his character really shone for me. Mind you, he was still a scene stealer in his funny moments. So, I love both characters obviously. Why did I choose Ami? Ultimately, her development felt more natural, and her actions less a thing of consequence. She was a real wild-card in the series, and as such every scene with her in it was attention-grabbing. Her character was far from uniform and predictable, and she added that element that really made the series shine above the rest. I can't really say the same of Akio; in that I feel the majority of what made that series really sparkle (the second season, which was IMO far superior to the first) was more attributable to the main characters of Tomoyo, Nagisa, and Ushio. This does not mean that I think Ami is a main character; just that I think her minor contributions and her unpredictability left me in anticipation for what she would do next and how people would react around her, and that as a supporting character she really did stand out. |

Tanda, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit Tanda because he really supported the other characters of the series a lot more than Kuu did. Tanda not only gave support to Balsa and Chagum but he quietly supported the two orphens that Balsa had also rescued. Group D-30 Ami Kawashima, Toradora! To be really honest, neither one of these characters do anything for me. I just really don't find them all that great but, I find Ami to be the more interesting one due to the facade she put up. |

Interestingly, this group I have no strong impressions about any of the characters left, really, unlike in other rounds where I was pretty sure who I would vote for before other people gave their reasoning (which generally confirmed my initial thoughts).
Also these are all characters who I have voted against in previous rounds. Group D-29 Voting for: Tanda, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit Reasons: He took out Euphie so he'd better be worth going further. All indications seem to be that he is, which is why he is the character I feel the strongest about here ... though I suppose that's not saying much. Group D-30 Voting for: Ami Kawashima, Toradora! Reasons: She sounds more interesting. Probably. I haven't seen either series and have no desire to change that so that's the best I'm likely to get for this, unless someone post something to really convince me otherwise. |
