Here's for hoping they won't just sell them through the Bandai store making it impossible for people like (non American residents) me to buy it. Like the Gurren Lagann movies, "thanks" for that Aniplex.

OH F*** YEAH. I loved both the OVA and the series. What's going on in the world? It's like all the companies I didn't care for before have started to make an effort into being awesome. Now all I need is for Viz to hop on board and all will be right with me.

Wonderful, that means more people will be trading in their DVDs to FYE as fast as they did when Bandai/Honneamise released Akira last year.
No way that's happening until they get their act together and continue releasing Monster. |

Woohoo! More Blu-ray goodness. Of course, this leaves the question as to whether it's an upscale or not, but I'll be getting it regardless (if nothing else, then at least it's on the new format - though of course it will be better if it's actually native HD). This is the sort of show that I wouldn't have expected to ever get on Blu-ray, so this is fantastic news.
And the information that Aniplex has started selling stuff on Right Stuf is arguably even better. I'll be very glad to not have to deal with the Bandai Store. That was by far my biggest gripe with what Aniplex has been up to. I buy virtually all of my anime and manga from Right Stuf, and I'd like to continue to do so. In any case, this is great news. Aniplex is deserves some praise for this. |

Too bad I don't have a Blu-ray player yet. Wonder if they'd re-release R.O.D the TV on DVD (already have the collector's box).

Both the OVA and TV series are upscales. They're respectively 9 and 6 years old, long before HD was anything common. The only shows that old I know of that were done in HD are 12 Kingdoms and GitS SAC. Anyhow, there's nothing wrong with the upscale on the Japanese BD box set release, and the Aniplex US release is going to use the same disc count, so I'm going to assume this will be almost the same encode with English subs and menus slapped on (English audio is already there). But anyone expecting some super HD experience out of this will be disappointed. The OVA in particular suffers a bit, even if the animation itself is good. I'll be buying this. I skipped buying the JP BD box, and it's over $300. However high Aniplex may price this box by US standards, it'll be a bargain compared to that. |

I've seen the quality of the BDs, and they're about the same as the DVDs, but as a big fan of the OVA and series, I'll be buying this.

I'm pretty sure they're gonna get stupid about this, and price it somewhere between $80-100....

Well, much as I'd like it to be cheaper, given that you're getting a 26 episode series and an OVA on Blu-ray, an MSRP of $80+ isn't particularly outlandish. And since that's MSRP rather than the real price we'll have to pay, the actual price won't be too bad. Sure, it would be nice if it were lower, but that's not particularly abnormal pricing at this point. |

I never knew Aniplex had a US branch...or that they were a licensing company. Have they been around for a while?

Not great, sure, but I wouldn't exactly say "no better than the DVD"... from the supposedly unfiltered encode I downloaded, it looks noticeably cleaner than the R1 DVD upscaled to 1080p, which is kind of noisy, especially during darker scenes. |
