If you haven't looked at my previous posts yet I'm introducing my wife to anime so far there are a few she likes for example Generator Gawl,Intial D(although I have been trying to get it on DVD), and her most favourite Kenichi the mightiest disciple! And I was just wondering are there a lot of women who are interested in anime or are men the majority? Ur opinion?

Straight up, I really don't know. Stay with me now, but I think now and days, it's half and half. Depending on the genre.
If this sounds like I am stereotyping, I don't mean too. Like I said earlier, I don't really have any solid facts, so I am just guessing based on forum responses and based on what I hear from friends and such.
I definitely think women tend to like the romance part of anime more than other parts of anime, but it all depends on the person's taste. Obviously, if everyone fit any stereotype, assumptions would be a thing of a past. The anime fans (that were women) that I know seem to like shojo shows or shows with cute characters more than shonen shows or slice of life shows.
I am sure there are some women that like shonen shows, but if you looking for statistics and such, I have no clue at all. Then again though, I've heard of people just liking the characters of a series, but not really liking the series.
Though, in the nine, nearly ten years I've been watching anime, I've never known any women that actually likes a ecchi or otherwise show. It's somewhat similar to women gamers, I am sure they exist somewhere, but they certainly are hard to find.
In the end, it all depends on the person. I am sure there are more women that enjoy anime now and days, but like I said earlier, I am not sure what percentage. Might be half and half and might not be.

o3o Yes you rang? /woman who likes anime/ =u= eheheh...
QAQ the one thing i have trouble with though is not finding other Female anime fans, it's finding female anime fans who aren't yaoi obsessed fantards. OTL QuQ I have a couple female friends who like loli though. eheheh....
I don't really hang out with many guys so in the past i used to think there were more Girl Anime Fans then guy ones xD so i have to say that it's not that there is more of either it's just they don't interact so it'll never be known if their are a lot. ouo/

I say its genre based. I've met tons of girls that like Anime. Not so much guys, but there have been a few. I know because I'm one o them. So, yeah some girls like the romance and the guy on guy junk (yaoi)and some guys like the blood and guts. There are guys (I assume) who like ecchi and and girls who like blood and guts.
Its all a matter of taste despite gender. I would have to say there are as many guys who like Anime as girls.

I talked to a young lady at the airport on the way home from AX and she was not only a serious anime fan, she was quite the shounen aficionado. She talked to me in detail about Naruto, One Piece and other heavily shounen shows. I couldn't comment much because I know nothing about those shows and don't care for much shounen. We both agreed that women were portrayed poorly in guy's anime. Like how very few popular shounen shows have strong and enduring female characters who don't end up becoming helpless later on in the series.
Maybe that's why I avoid so much shounen. But lots of girls who are anime fans do seem to be interested in shounen. Anime is escapist entertainment so I suppose from all the entertainment that does get thrown at women, intending to have a female appeal, it does get old and any girl wouldn't mind having a little fighting and mecha action once in a while (and they can find plenty of it in anime).
I like looking at pretty girls in anime, so the anime for guys that I do watch tend to be the fanservicey, moe or adventure/sci-fi with romance types of shows.

I can honestly say that I know as many women that like Anime as men. It was a woman who introduced me to 12 kingdoms. Maybe she would like that? I am a bit surprised she liked Generator Gawl though. So maybe she will like stuff like Guyver?
In the end though it's personal taste. As long as she basically likes Anime there will always be shows out there for her to watch. I would suggest perhaps introducing her to the genre search present on this website. If you can find a synopsis she likes the sound of that's probably a good direction to go.
Another useful thing is the supporting character tournament going on in the sticky above. In many rounds people will put forward their cases for particular characters. You will often find yourself becomeing interested in a show you haven't seen before because of something you come across on these forums. At least 10 shows i have really loved. I watched because I was made aware in this way.

As a female fan I always thought that the fanbase was split 50-50 but I know more female fans and they all seem to be more enthusiastic than the male fans I know but I haven't a clue why that is.
When I have a friend who I'm recommending anime to usually I see what kind of books or movies they like and work from their, usually I can think of something in a similar genre and I'll recommend that. So I second the idea of the genre search here or at anime-planet.com, that should give her something to work off of and even if she ends up watching she doesn't like that'll help her narrow the search for the next time.

I (a male) know more female anime fans than male, probably in about a 60/40 ratio. Most of the ones I've talked to certainly like romance shows more than I, but I haven't noticed them being particularly opposed to any genre of anime (granted, I don't discuss ecchi with them). Elfen Lied, featuring decent amounts of loli and gore, was recommended to me by a female. She likes the show mainly because of the characters.
From my limited experience, both males and females tend to like good anime shows, but shounen/action can be found more often in the males' favorites, and romance can be found more often in the females' favorites. I wouldn't go generalizing this, though, because my sample size is maybe 30 people.

Teriyaki Terrier was basically right, now a days the ratio of male to female is about 50/50. Sure if we looked at the earlier anime fanbase, for example the early 90s, we would have seen that the fandom was majority male. But now with more "female friendly" titles becoming popular the gender gap has been closing up.
Now there has always been female anime fans, even though early in anime most things were targeted towards males. But it tended to be a small amount. But now with "girly" titles becoming popular and easily accessible the female fan base has expanded. These girly titles are making it ok for girls to read manga and watch anime too. And after they read those first few titles many tend to expand their interest and break out of the stereotypical mold of the "girly girl" fan.
On top of that even non "girly" titles are being seen as much more female friendly now. Titles like Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, and Code Geass have been getting fresh blood into the anime system. And many of these fans are females. Thus creating a whole new generation of fan girls.
And I've witnessed this closing gap first hand. I remember when I first got into anime the fan girl scene was still relatively small and all but one of my friends (that were anime fans) were male. But with then these female friendly titles started to become popular and now I'd say the majority of my anime friends are female. And every time I go to a con I see pretty even representation of both genders.

I think that depends on how strict you are. One Piece does have strong female protagonists, but they definitely at one point seemed weak and reliant on the protagonist (thinking back, all the main characters were that way except for the lead himself). I just know that those two arcs featuring their weak side (which was viewed by me as something that happened equally to the male main characters in the show as well) were extremely catchy and contained outstanding character depth.
Nowadays both of them definitely dominate the other male main characters (literally). I'd say the balance of genders is really nicely portrayed here, and I'm not surprised that it could attract a huge female fan base.
Without going further into spoilers, I can assure you that the path they chose was that of someone who can do the fighting themselves.
I'd say if you ever find the time to, jump to the Arlong Arc (ep. 31-45) and give it a shot. That's the first really emotional arc, and it features Nami facing her fate, and making her decisions. I believe it's available for free at Funi's streaming portal.
Also, if relevant, the anime also features male characters who became ladies on the same grounds of fairness (though you won't get to see that before a few hundred episodes, I believe).
As for the ladies' involvement with anime (or whether they're majority or not), I just have one thing to say: the more the merrier!

Ever since thinking about the uneven portrayal of women in shounen anime, I've been thinking about Hunter X Hunter, which is one shounen show that happens to be my 3rd most favorite anime. The girl I talked to at the airport basically said the same thing as you did about One Piece, egoist. The show was much more respectful with the portrayal of women as strong players in the whole scheme of things.
Hunter X Hunter on the other hand, simply lacks female main characters. But it also lacks fan service. Then I thought about one girl in the show who was a villain and also a very powerful one. Unfortunately, her weapon is a vacuum cleaner. And then another strong female character had a unique special ability: cooking expertise. That really paints a sexist image if you really look at it. I started getting upset about Hunter X Hunter in that the creator seemed like he wanted to avoid the female element altogether and when he did place it in there, he just used them in a way that only drew attention to stereotypical gender roles. But otherwise it's a fantastic anime series.

I know a lot of women who are into anime. Show them shows that maybe are not shoenen.
For example Kinos Journey, Haibane Renmi, and Mushishi. Ones which have great plot and are not overly made for men will perhaps grab attention more than say showing One Piece or Bleach

Not a problem Gundam83 and based on Action/Comedy I can make a couple of suggestions.
Slayers - Tons to watch lots of fun strong female protagonist. This is a classic to so many Anime fans including me
Trigun - The first Anime I ever say that skillfully combined action with rather slapstick comedy and still managed to keep the Drama. No mean feat in itself.
I won't narrow it down any further than that for you though as it really is better to go and find the things you like the sound of
As far as gender roles go though I sympathise but remember it's not only women who get gender slotted. Indeed If asked to decide worldwide which was the most degraded sex in media and indeed elsewhere today I would say men easily. However if you disagree please do not argue the point in this topic send me a PM and I will be quite happy to debate it with you
