On the recent recommendation of the Shelf Life column, I checked out Case Closed: Countdown to Heaven.

*minor spoilers*

Long story short, I stopped watching it after they showed the chibi-girl, who is living in constant fear for her life and desperate to remain hidden, calling her dead sister's apartment to leave messages about what she's up to. Groan. It simply doesn't make any sense.

Anyways, I'm basically confused about the entire premise of this show. In the first episode the main character is poisoned and instead of dying, turns into a 10 year old boy.

After that setup, why isn't the solution to every single murder simply "A Wizard did it"? Why is the whole "I'm now a 10 year old boy" thing even necessary?

Plot device....

One which in the show rarely comes up and is not worth dwelling on really. More to focus on the actual cases themselves than the overarching plot. The series itself aids in that endeavor really well considering how little it comes up...

But I get Detective Dog Brown vibes from it, only instead of missing items and robberies he's solving murders and kidnappings.

It is probably my own assumption that you've haven't seen much of the TV series since all the background info are included although spread thinly over the 100+ episode lol. And Hibara which I believed is the little chibi girl you're talking about has a reason to fear the organisation.

What it boils down to is a crime solving detective shows.

And why is Donald Duck a duck? He could just as easily be just some guy who doesn't wear pants. Iconic cartoon character = FAIL.

Look, I don't see how any anime fan could object to this plot device in particular. Apart from all the crazy and unrealistic stuff that happens in anime, the whole whodunit genre is fantastical if you think about it. It's called "fiction" for a reason.

The girl was calling her dead sister's answering machine because she was upset at losing her sister - you think?

Detective Conan is a show that sort of works despite its premise, not because of it. It's fun to watch Conan solve grizzly murder mysteries, but you sort of have to ignore how ridiculous it is that it's a teen in a child's body and little progress is made in the main plot.

Though, actually, around the time Ai and Jodie show up, the Black Organization episodes get a bit better.

Case Closed is a great anime series, the fact that you couldn't fallow leads me to believe that you haven't seen much of the TV series. The fact that he is poisoned and turned into a young boy is, as others have said, a simple plot device. Its just a way to put a spin on the series. Plus it allows the audience rang to increase. See by making him a young boy this lets young children enjoy it by allowing them to think that they could do the same. But by letting him have the mind of someone older allows an older audience to connect with the character as well.

I would feel sorry for you if you tried watching Umineko no naku koro ni, if you really believe an instance of the supernatural automatically means that a wizard has to be the cause of everything.

Start with a random non-continutity movie which has characters with backgrounds up to roughly the 4th/5th season, you are more lost then DC being terrible.

It isn't hard to understand what the movie was trying to imply with the girl calling the answering machine of her dead sister. Understanding what is going on does not main that is what you would do. It is just saying you comprehend the actions.

The clues, hints, and deductions show you that a wizard didn't do it. That's the point.

The reason the main character is 10 y/o is explained at the beginning of all the movies. There is enough catch up at the start to tell you the rules/pre-story of the anime. Accept it and then go from there. You bemoaning or fighting the premise of the movie is not the fault of Case Closed.

Perhaps the best choice is for you to research anime better. In other words don't pick up random recommended movies based on anime series if you are unwilling to accept their world setup. Or instead of starting with a random movie start with episode 1 of the anime.

Detective Conan / Case Closed is a fairly character driven series; it helps to know all of them from the show and see their introduction episodes and so forth. That's usually the case with movies based on television series; I can't imagine many people who've never seen the show enjoying them much.

I have a hypothesis about Case Closed: the odd number episodes tend to be better than the even number episodes. i.e. episode 5 would be better than 12, etc.

I like Case Closed as disposable entertainment. I watch it On Demand on Funi's channel, but I would never own it. It's not the type of show you want to rewatch.

well.. I disagree with some others opinions on Case Closed. Its a wonderful series (a heck of alot better then many modern anime I can think of.) Its just that its one of thoese things that doesn't try to be anything other then what it is..it doesn't try to be the next DBZ, Naruto or One Piece, it just tries to tell a fun story for those who read & watch it to enjoy..its really just one of those series you will either love, or not care for at all. Its one of my favorites..but I can understand why lots of younger anime fans and even a few my age dont' care much for it.

Frankly I just hope funimation eventually decides to at least give us season 6. so we can get Ai..er I mean Vi graythorns debut episode. (& some more movies eventually.)

Detective Conan isnt for everyone just like probably the Sherlock Holmes movie isnt for everyone. I personally would have started with the TV series over the movie so you actually know who the characters are!
