People tend to forget about the directors. People learn about the character designers, original manga-ka, voice actors but it's usually the directors that get shafted. Who do you think is one of the most creative directors and should get more work? You could seperate answers.
I think Sayo Yamamoto is one of the most interesting directors out there. She adds some of that female pizazz and badassery in Michiko to Hatchin. I'm just amazed she isn't getting more work. It's been 2008 and she still hasn't gotten any work! |

Speaking of Michiko specifically, it sold abysmally in Japan. That could possibly be a reason why she's not seeing too much work. The rest of the stuff she's worked on only seems to be as an episode director or storyboarding.

I've never seen Manglobe as a company that's sole purpose was to make money.

You look at all the things that Madhouse has worked on and you think One Outs and Kaiji are the only titles they make money on? Don't forget this is the same studio that made Death Note, NANA, Monster, Paranoia Agent, Gunslinger Girl, Ninja Scroll, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, movies for Bleach and Naruto, and Has made every Satoshi Kon movie so far. And there are countless others. Madhouse is a big time studio who has to fallow the laws of economics. They know what will make them money and what will make them broke. Now this may mean that some series or directors don't get a second chance but it's a rule they play by skillfully.

As Manglobe has a grand total of less than 10 anime, we don't know what their intentions are. They seem to favor big budget productions with a certain uniqueness, but then also put out stuff like Scared Blacksmith, where the pre-order counts skyrocketed after they confirmed nipples on the home video release.

I really would love to see Yasuhiro Yoshiura do some more work.
Perhaps even doing a good Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou adaptation considering how much Yoshiura loves to work with cafes in a futuristic setting ![]() |

Well, Masaaki Yuasa and Hiroshi Hamasaki gets their kicks in from time to time thanks to Madhouse, so I guess I won't complain. However, given the recent discussions on the ANNCast, I'm scared these two won't get their chances in the future from Madhouse.
However, it does seem that the "good guys" do get their chances even with all the dreck coming from the industry. People hate on Osamu Kobayashi (director of Beck, Paradise Kiss, some slice of life show and ep. 4 of Gurren Lagann) due to his visual style (I think some people just hate the mouths), but he's still doing stuff here and there and I hope he sticks to his guns. I do think that Akitoshi Yokoyama should get his own show. He's consistently proved himself as being really good and somebody should give him a shot to do a series. He's done great action episodes (Shippuden ep. 131) to touching character-driven episodes (Kaiba eps. 3, 7-- among the ones he directed). Maybe he's not cut out for it or just doesn't want to do it, though. There's also Hiroshi Ikehata (see here and here too), but I think he's just fine doing his own thing directing episodes. That's another thing to do consider: whether a guy is suited to simply directing a single or a few episodes or does he have the chops to conduct a huge project that is a TV series.

Studio intention doesn't matter. Directors are approved by committee, and people are evaluated by commercial success. This doesn't mean that critical successes are meaningless......everyone knows what's good or bad.....but producers prioritize/reward the people who produce hits for them. At any rate, Michiko to Hatchin was the launch title for Fuji's NOISE timeslot (which tanked), which was intended to gain a large following like noitaminA. As far as Fuji was concerned, the NOISE projects failed.
They're definitely shifting these days. Whereas Manglobe used to do nothing but original projects (and just one at a time), they're turning to adaptations. Output is also increasing, so they're becoming more similar to the typical studio. |

I would like to see more from Nizo Yamamoto. He directed Miyori No Mori, which I liked a lot. His expertise as background artist and art director probably makes for a somewhat different perspective on making anime.
Yasuhiro Yoshiura of Time Of Eve looks like an interesting newly rising star. |

Well, considering that he's only directed two series, one OVA and a few shorts over the course of 15+ years, I'd definitely say Shinichiro Watanabe needs more work.
I also would love to see more directorial works from Kazuto Nakazawa. He's done a ton of stuff as an animator or a character designer (which he does very well) But I also really enjoyed the few shorts and things he's directed. I'd like to see what he could do with a full series. |
