I have been a fan of anime for about 10 years now, and was wondering what some ways were to persuade others to likeing anime. I've come up with some good answers which are: Show them a very popular and very beautiful anime. Show them why anime is so great and what benefits come from it. Hmmmmm...I did have some other answers to it but I've forgotten them. I'm not trying to force someone to do something they don't but I'm just trying to offer someone new options of fun and enjoyment.

I don't think you should push this on anyone. Maybe ask them if they'd wanna see an anime and then tell them some to choose from. Don't try and make them do it. And what benefits come from watching anime?

Sadly, show 'em something that bridges the gaps between anime and US cartoons, like TransFormers or something. OR, you can go for something that mimicks American cinema, so you can say, "See, this is just like (x), but it's animated." Go for familiar, then show them exotic.

I'm aware of this. I won't force anyone to do anything they don't want to, or change a person. Its just like saying offering them new options and fun things. |

I've never tried to persuade someone to watch anime. But, I did pop in the Bebop movie and my friend said that was, "The least annoying anime show he'd ever seen. There were no big-eyed squealing girls with ponytails."

I'd just ask them if they were interested in watching some anime. If not, then you could try other tactics to get them hooked. For example, you could invite them over for a movie, and pop in something like Millenium Actress or Memories or something. Anything that's apart from the stereotype of porn, Pokemon, or whiny magical girls might get them to realize that anime comes in a broader range than they thought.

To first-timers I often show them Princess Mononoke, because quite a few famous Hollywood actors did it such as Gillian Anderson, Billy Bob Thortan, and Jada Pinket Smith. This anime also has a killer story, and to date I have not witnessed a single one of my non-anime friends saying anything short of "that movie rocked!!!". Miyazaki films in general are usually a safe bet though

I'd just stay away from "Spring and Chaos" though because A) the dub sucked and B) you need to be on several different types of illicit drugs to fully understand the movie. Good flick, but REAAAAALLLLLY artsy.

well, you need to know first if they are aven willing to watch n anime and you also need a bit of knowledge what they like.
if they like humorous series -> take a anime with lots of humor they like drama -> grave of the fireflies is on its way action -> streetfighter and god knows what other things there are sci-fi -> gundam series, tekkaman blade, ... i think you're getting the idea by now

Most people think anime is kid shows so showing them movies like Blackmagic M66,Grave of the Fireflies,Ghost in the Shell and/or any series which has a good blend of action,comedy,romance that have decent plots. Show that anime is more than just simple kid cartoons.

The answer to the question really depends on who the person is that you're trying to get to watch anime. Two examples:
I refer to a former uncle that treated me like a 3 year old everytime he caught me watching anime. In his case, I left him Plastic Little to watch, which was the raciest title I had at the time. He shut up very quickly. Another example is one of my co-workers. He's in his 50's. He absolutly would not sit through an anime. I went so far as to ask him what kind of movies he liked, and when he said it I described the plot for the Your Under Arrest movie. I asked him if he would watch a movie with said plot and he said yes. I asked him if he would still watch it if it was animated and he said no. I finally got him on Captian Tylor. He has millitary connections, and although he has not seen the entire set, he did get through 5 episodes and he couldn't stop laughing. The next one I'm going to show him is Cowboy Bebop the movie. Yes, yes, I know it's a new anime, etc., but this guy hasn't seen anything, and I want to show him that one more for the music than the anime itself. Also, there really isn't any nice parts to the story, if you know what I mean. It wasn't ment for younger kids, and it's a good action movie. In my co-workers case, though, it's the music that's going to get him. It all depends on who you want to get into anime. In some cases, hentai is what it will take and you go out from there. In others, a good fighting anime, etc. One thing to remember: make shure the person can handle nude characters. There's a lot of anime out there that doesn't have any sex, but has a lot of fanservice. Ranma is a good action/comedy but there are some long nude shots. If they can get past that, then I would show all the female adults Maison Okkaku. It's long, it's drawn out. It's happy, it's sad. It's highly emotional and it's got a happy ending. Perfect for people that watch soaps. If they're into action films, then go with Your Under Arrest or Bebop, etc. Find their key interest and go from there. And remember, strapping them into a chair is not recommended, although locking the door is ^_^. |

If you wish to introduce a friend of yours into anime I'd sugest you show them a genre that they would most likely enjoy. You know your friends and what they like, try to notice what american movies/tv shows they enjoy, if he/she watches shows like Buffy or Angel, then you may want to have them watch Hellsing or Vampire Hunter D. I think that evry one has at least one anime they can trully appriciate.

my closest friends and I have been converting people to anime for the past few years, and here's our MO:
Girls: show them Fruits Basket, chances are they'll fall in love with it. If however, they are more into action/comedy, show them something more appropriate. Guys: Find out their favorite genre, and show them anime from that genre. Generally, we go for: Action - Bebop/Ghost in the shell stand alone complex/Last exile/Read or Die/ Full metal alchemist Comedy - Full metal panic fumoffu/ Golden boy / Azumanga Daio Drama - Kino no Tabi / Haibane Renmei / Fruits Basket / Saikano works pretty well. |
