I've been meaning to rent this series for a while now, it may not be intelligent or unique but it certainly looks like a heck of a lot of fun.

Oh, trust me it is. There is a reason as to why this was the best selling show for funimation in 2009. The said "that people bought 3 copeis and one for the dog".
I think the biggest appeal of Kenichi is that as an anime its very entertaining, very enjoyable, but at the same time you feel like you are watching lessons on the various martial arts.
The comedy varies, mostly not parody, but still very funny and to Boot the dub cast a really good and the dub is exceptional good.
I give this anime a 5 star out of 5 for enjoyment. Highly recommend it.

Even FUNimation was shocked at how well it did. Apparently, it did AMAZING. Personally, I think some of the older fans, DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho guys and gals from the 90's and early 00's who haven't really been into the new stuff Japan's been handing out lately, found it very refreshing while reminiscent.

I was so, SO happy when this happened. I thought he was gonna be gone for a while until he could hitch a ride back on the mothership. Turns out, I was wrong, and then I cried.
Don't get me wrong, I think Niijima's an important part of the show, and he definitely does a lot to move the plot. But sometimes I wish the little bugger would JUST FREAKING DIE ALREADY!!! DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE YOU ALIEN FREAK FOR WEARING THAT STUPID-ASS DRESS AND GIVING ME NIGHTMARES FOR WEEKS![/i]

It sells probably because Miu has simultaneously the roundest butt and the tightest pants of any character in the last 4-5 years.
I've seen the first season and should get season 2 in the mail today. It definitely is a show that does better as the episodes go on -- the first few episodes were way too mired in the loser-guy formula. What starts to work is when Kenichi finally shifts out of his trembling coward mode into his maybe I can do this mode. I agree with most critics that it takes too long.
Also attractive is how Miu pretends to be totally naive about him and yet also genuinely protective. She has to be held back from taking on his fights for him but she does because she knows it is best. You end up wanting to see if not only can he defend himself from his persecutors, but also if he can measure up to her standard. Another feature is that they seem to have some genuine martial arts instruction thrown in (a lot of it is fantasy stuff I know but it is an anime).
