Does anyone know if any Macross franchise manga are slated for any kind of release in North Ameican? I have tried searching the ANN encyclopedia, but all I have found was the fact that Macross 7 Trash seems to be caught up in a licensing dispute. The others do not seem to be, which seems a bit strange to me because Harmony Gold, I would think, would rush to put their names on anything that got this kind of marketing. However, that’s not to say the only disputes are with them, if that is even the case at all. In fact, ANN suggested that Harmony Gold was going to work with Tokyopop for the release.
To be honest, I would love to see any of them released. I was thinking that it might be easier for one telling the original SDF Macross story to be sold if it used the Robotech terminology, though I’m actually not sure what bearing that has on the rights to the franchise. I am simply going on something I once heard at the robotech.com forums about how none of the Japanese licensors really own any portion of Robotech, so Harmony Gold is still allowed to unilaterally market a lot of their own graphic novels. To be honest, I haven't ever read an actual American Robotech graphic novel. |

Viz released the Macross II manga by Sukehiro Tomita back in the early 1990s (first as floppy comics and then as a big collected edition).
Amazon.co.uk has the collected edition - I presume amazon.com has it too - but it's long out of print and quite pricey. # ISBN-10: 1569310041 # ISBN-13: 978-1569310045 |

Those ISBN numbers are giving me a book called Dance Till Tomorrow by Naoki Yamamoto. Is this the same text? That certainly sounds like a Macross title, but the name of the author is different.
Thanks so much for your help! |

There's a Robotech 'manga'. By Ben Dunn I think. Oh my god it was terrible in so many ways

Any Macross manga would likely wind up in a rights dispute since Harmony Gold currently has a trademark for the name Macross in the US
The only reason we saw Macross II released here was because HG wasn't enforcing their rights at the time. Now that they're trying to revive Robotech, they've been enforcing those rights. |

Uh, no, Dance Till Tomorrow is a very, very different kind of manga. Not a mecha in sight - just lots of naked people and experimental theatre... I got those ISBN numbers from amazon.co.uk but looking at the book itself, it has a different number so I guess amazon screwed up (not for the first time). Try looking for it under ISBN 1-56931-003-3. |

I think Amazon screwed up again. Trying 1-56931-003-3 on both .com and .co.uk got me Battle Angel Alita. Strange! Searching 978-1569310045 on .co.uk gives me the right Macross II collected manga. It is quite pricey as you said; about £25 or so! It doesn’t seem that amazon.com actually has a copy of that collected edition in stock, but thank you very much.
Eep, and thanks for saving me from Dance Till Tomorrow. That would have been….eheh…interesting. Ouch, I saw the Robotech Ben Dunn issue. Strangely enough, it’s actually sold out on amazon… There were and are a large series of Robotech comic books, but I don't know how well any of them have sold. Actually, even on the ADV Robotech release DVDs that were not part of the remastered set, it mentions at the end of each episode that 'Comic adaptations are available through Comico.' That firm has, of course, been out of business for years. The remastered version replaced the message with 'Please visit Robotech.com.' What I was thinking was Harmony Gold could get in on it, instead of have some kind of dispute. That certainly seems like what was going to happen with Tokyopop, but the deal must have fallen through. I was wondering if Harmony Gold might be persuaded if, say, Viz or whoever approached them and said that they’d like to market a Robotech: Macross Saga manga, instead of trying to use the name Macross exclusively. I also wondered if using Carl Macek’s names instead of the real ones, to whatever ire or other dispute with fans that would cause, would appease Harmony Gold’s licensing department at all. |

Dance Till Tommorrow isn't a Macross title- it's a seinen sex comedy manga publishers in PULP, a mature readers anthology VIZ published in the late 90's/early 00's.
There's dozens of Macross/Robotech comics that've been licensed over the years- Comico's original line, Antarctic's swing at the title, Eternity, Academy and assorted small publishers- I have a few issues of a miniseries done by Studio Tavicat (Rikki Simmons and Tavishia Wolfgarthe, better known for Reality Check, Invader Zim and Shutterbox] for one title. DC/Wildstorm was the latest publisher to carry the license. They printed the Comico adaption of Macross, and published 3 miniseries. The first miniseries with some excellent artwork from Tommy Yune and others is collected in this TPB- http://dccomics.com/wildstorm/graphic_novels/?gn=3902 They also published a Yellow Dancer mini [which had Yoshitaka Amano doing some cover art] that hasn't been collected yet, as well as a Southern Cross/Masters set mini. http://dccomics.com/wildstorm/graphic_novels/?gn=14584 They're apparently collecting the Shadow CHronicles miniseries prequel in May. Which I guess means they still have the license, or at least the license to reprint what they had published. Not a big fan of wiki, but here's an entry on Robotech comics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robotech_%28comics%29#Antarctic_Press_.281997-1998.29 VIZ published the previously mentioned Macross II manga, but other then that not much japanese stuff has been brought here. Tokyopop was going to publish Macross 7's manga, but ran into rights issues [this was around 2005-ish? I think] However, Haruhiko Mikimoto's had a prolific manga output since switching to making comics, and a lot of his work has been released here, so Macross fans might like these manga- -Baby Birth [Tokyopop... this was a short series, and finished awhile back, so check around for it] -Marionette Generation [VIZ/Animerica Extra- I think 4 vols? They completed the series, which was originally published in Newtype Japan] -Gundam Ecole du Ciel [Tokyopop, ongoing] BTW--- Ben Dunn's Robotech comics were published from 1997-1998, so yeah, no suprise they'd be hard to find now for some folks. Looking around, it appears there was only a period of 4 or so years since Robotech launced that someone hadn't held rights to the seires for comics. EDIT---- Checking amazon, it looks like DC/Wildstorm is also publishing a collection of another miniseries they did http://www.amazon.ca/Robotech-Love-Stories-Jay-Faerber/dp/1401228518/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270594799&sr=1-1 Had forgotten about this one. I wonder if it's an indication we'll see a new miniseries? The pricing makes me guess these'll be 19.99 priced books, so not sure how they'll fit alongside the digest sized collection of the first mini. |

Ah, you enjoyed it? I've never met anyone to really make a decision either way about it.

The Comico comics are comprehensive, but the quality;s all over the place- as such the WildStorm comics are a downright treat. I loved the pinup section with Chynna Clugston drawing Minmay's beauty pageant rival. It served as a nice backdrop to the series, and was mostly fun because of the rich art and colouring, a nice change of pace from most b+w manga. It's not the biggest epic out there, but if you like Robotech/Macross, you'll probably enjoy it. |

Thanks for the recommendations. To be honest, I've never seen the Comico series, though as I said I recall the ending of each original episode telling the view that comic adaptions were available through them. I hope to have a look; thanks again. |
