I'm not quite sure I get what you're saying. Come again? Besides, you can always just see it when you get back. You get better seats when it's not a premiere anyway. |

The film is playing only on special days in certain cities. This was announced a few weeks ago in their SHONEN JUMP magazine. The info on www.viz.com says that it will premier:
07.23.2004 San Diego, CA 07.31.2004 Baltimore, MD 08.07.2004 Minneapolis, MN 08.13.2004 San Francisco, CA 08.14.2004 Los Angeles, CA 08.21.2004 Atlanta, GA 08.28.2004 Philadelphia, PA 09.04.2004 New York, NY 09.11.2004 Toronto, Canada 09.18.2004 Dallas, TX |

It should be restated that the showings will be invitation-only to Viz mailing list members on a first-come, first-serve basis. So if you want to see the movie, subscribe/join and be ready.
Link to subscribe On a small note, I would have thought Shonen Jump subscribers would get this important offer over people on a free mailing list. Afterall, they're paying customers... |

Oh. Huh. I was under the impression that those were the premiere dates, and they'd run it for a short time afterwards. =/ What's the point of showing it once per city? There's a great PR decision for you. |

It IS a PR decision, designed to hype the DVD release and increase visibility. It's not designed to make money

I don't think having one showing in a small handful of cities, only open to people that were invited, is going to do much to increase visibility. If it's invitation only, one-day only, then the people who are going are the people who already know about the movie. |

Perhaps Viz is not sure how well the films would do theatrically, so they're gauging potential sales by giving away screenings for the first installment. Plus they're still relatively new to the arthouse circuit. (Most likely, it was Bandai that handled Jin Roh's theatrical release.) So maybe they have a tough time proving to theater owners that they have viable properties, and this is the only way to do it.

It's a guerilla thing. They do it all the time in Hollywood, running around doing a special screening here or there, test marketing it in different cities that sort of thing.
