I buy a lot of anime and my mom knows how much I buy, but she's never known how much I spend on it. She just knows to expect a package or 3 at least every other week and to keep an eye out for the mailman. Tonight, though, I has having trouble with Paypal and Ebay so I asked for her help and she saw how much money I was spending.

She immediaitley goes, "What are you buying for $250?" I immediately started laughing because I realized she has no idea how much money this anime stuff costs, she just knows I get a lot. I tried to convince her that for what I was buying it was great deal, but she just rolled her eyes. The thing is that she also buys DVDs, but it's stuff like "Little House On the Prairie" and "Dr Quinn" for $25 a set. I then started out pointing out things in my collection for her to guess how much it costs. I started with my Sailor Moon S and SuperS sets because they're the most expensive and she didn't want to play anymore once I told her how much they cost. It was hilarious.

So my question to all you is: What kind of reactions have you gotten from people outside of the anime loop once they learn how much you paid for some of it? It can be DVDs, figurines or all those other little items like wall scrolls.

Also, do you try to convince them that it's actually not that much when you take in the circumstances ("It's a foreign product, anime isn't that big or the item was OOP or whatever)?

Oh my parents know the cost of DVDs by now.

Basically I order DVDs maybe once every 4-6 months, I always spend $50+ a order. I buy manga every two months or so. My mom drives me to the store and doesn't say anything about me spending my money on comics.

Then there was the whole "Your spending $200+on DVDs as your holiday gift? Don't you think that's a bit to much?" deal I got when I placed my gift order a few months ago.

I love to point out how much I spend to visiting family to. My aunt thinks that my shelves and mech collecting is a good hobby and my mom and dad should just let me do as I please for now. My friends who come over to hang out always love the fact we can just pull out a random title off my DVD shelf now and watch something. Anime hyper Or the fact I can lend out my manga to them and what not.

Basically my mom and dad have stopped caring because everything I buy is out of my own money, or it's gift money from them and I can place the order my self with out them doing the work of filling things out. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing Anime hyper

when I told a couple of my friends how much I spent one time they thought I was completely looney toons.

But I dont buy clothes or purses or whatever they usually buy every check, so I explain it to them like that.

I make a point of not talking about that. Of course, smart people know automatically if they see my collection (but that is only IF they see it)... but I sure don't just tell people about the "cost" part of anime collecting.

...I know I'm a cursed spendthrift, but that doesn't mean other people have to judge me for it.

(I was the same way when collecting the heck out of music. And books. Etc.)

I don't worry about it too much. I guess I don't talk much about my anime buying, and if I do, I don't talk too much about how much I am spending on it. It has come up with a couple of people at work, but most of them have something similar. One guy loves golf and is always looking for clubs to collect. One person likes to spend a day or two a month shopping for antiques. Another person buys rare books. Heck, we have several smokers in the office. At least I'm not literally burning my extra spending money.

If you are spending your money on something that brings you enjoyment, then it's money well spent. As long as you have your other needs taken care of and are not spending irresponsibly, then I don't really think anyone should be criticizing you for it. Who is to say what is or isn't a "waste" of money?

Being an adult i have to manage my money, so I may buy one anime something on every paycheck. So I may put some money down on a boxed set of a show, or a manga or two. I have really important bills to pay, like dues, or lights, or internet.

Meh what you spend your own leisure money on is your own business imo Smile If you wan't to go and buy football tickets or a mobile phone or a present for your girlfriend or a huge bucketful of Anime dvd's makes never no mind. As long as it's your money to spend.

When I was still living at home, my mother would NEVER know how much I spent on anime, because she already had a dim view of cartoons and manga in general, and the price I was paying would probably make her have a fit.

Now that I'm by myself, I may drop a "Oh, I just picked up a few things while I was out" and she kind of just shrugs and goes with it. She would hate to see my bedroom now though. Razz

With me it's more what I spend on DVDs in general, which isn't much lately, since there's more to my collection than just anime. However, I'm an employed 27 year old adult and it's really nobody else's business how much I spend and on what as long as I have enough for the bills.

I can't answer that question because nobody I know knows how much I spend on anime, etc. I'm pretty sure they'd be appalled if they did. Frankly, I try to forget how much I spend, too.

Well, first off I only buy thinpacks for purely space reasons. I literally don't have much more room and that's going to pretty much end the issue for me once I preorder the last Honey & Clover set and leave room for Vampire Knight when it comes out and anticipated room for the rest of Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC being licensed.

I also don't have boatloads as there's only a certain amount of anime that grabs me enough that I know (or can be fairly certain after research) I'll rewatch.

I'm also realistic about how much I can buy and actually have time to watch at least once a year.

I have $1000+ worth of anime merchandise, but that is from collecting over it 11 years. I tend to keep it a secret from people but once they walk in my room it's pretty obvious that my collection must be worth a lot. Haha I should upload some pictures for that one forum that shows fans' biggest collections. Well maybe it isn't quite that big. =P

When doing an order a while ago, my wife was astonished to see a total of $1000 in the cart. "Is that how much you spend every time?", she asked shockingly. I replied, "Nope. The worst part is about to come when I shave this down to my average of $200."

She watched me go through and begin deleting them off, one by one. She was curious to know why did this, so I said "TRSI doesn't have a wish list, so I throw in everything I want. Then, I put an 'order' on possible enjoyment of the series. Most of these, I know nothing about."

Of course, she thought that was rather silly, but she's come to terms with it.

When the kids come over, they usually do so with their friends who find my collection "interesting". When they ask how much it goes for, I simply tell them "It depends on where you shop. Some are as low as $12 for a collection, some more than $80. The average is about $40."

They don't seem shocked by the amount, especially given their purchases of music and movies. I guess the generation gap does see prices differently.

But when it comes to my figures and merchandise, those prices are hush-hush. Telling people figures can go as high as $140 would shut their brain down to find some logical reason why plastic costs so much despite them enjoying the display.

I guess I'll always be a sucker for this stuff, but it's better than what Hollywood shoves out or what's on TV, that's for sure.

@ PJ - it's true that TRSI doesn't have a "wish list" per se, but you can "save" your possibles for a latter date. They are stored in your shopping cart and when you are ready to order any of them, you can just bump them up into the order section.

I think people would be more shocked to know the price I pay for anime merchandise rather than DVDs.
