I did dig the rival bands in this one, but the pacing could be a little faster as well.

The series is great, and I think it's ridiculous to rate the art that low.
It's DIFFERENT, but thats what makes it so awesome. When I first picked it up, I was like "wth?" But after reading it, I wouldn't want any other art than this for this story. It fits so well. |

There were a few other reviews(GANTZ, ZETSUBOU SENSEI) where I thought the art was judged way too harshly too. But I love the art style in DMC--kinda stiff, grotesque, caricature-like; it sort of reminds me of some of the indie comics I used to read back in the 90s. |

I agree. Alot of reviews seem to hate on anything that doesn't look like it was copied from DBZ, Naruto, or Bleach. |

What are you talking about? First of all, the reviewers here are not uberfanboys of "standard shonen fare." They tend to give all genres an equal shake.
Second of all, Santos said he thought the art worked for the manga's style, but it wasn't objectively "good." How is that not fair? Their are mangaka who can make their art fit the scene no matter what, and have the capability to handle different scenes (exagerration, serious, basic clarity) equally well, and those who can't, but can still do what they can to let the art fit the story most of the time despite their shortcoming. This mangaka is in the latter category. Let's just say he can't draw like Urasawa, but it's ok because he's not trying to. |

I don't actually read all that much manga any more, but I always read Carlos' reviews. I find him to be objective, professional, and, in the cases where I have read something he is reviewing, generally right on the button, whatever the genre.
As Agent355 points out, he does say that the art style works in the story's favour, but it might not hold up elsewhere or with other works and I agree. I don't think anyone could argue that Wakasugi's artwork is comparable in quality to Kubo's or Yazawa's, although it works just fine in the context of DMC's world. |
