Other website closings we've reported on:
animenewsnetwork.com/archives/news.php?subtopic_id=279 So what do I mean by Immenselly popular? Well, according to Alexa (which is never that reliable), 4Chan wasn't frequented quite as much as ANN. They received a bit under half as many visitors as ANN, and served about 66% as many pages. That works out to about 18k people a day, and 130 000 pages a day. Pretty big |

oh, and there was this: animenewsnetwork.com/feature.php?id=123
It's weird, of all the sites that were our peers back when I first got involved with Anime News Network, only Anime on DVD is left. There are a few magazine style sites that have come into their own since then (Anime Fringe, Anime Tourist), but for the msot part, the number of decent anime sites seems to have been shrinking these past couple fo years. And largely, it appears to be because Anime is so popular. It was much easier to manage these sites back when Anime was a small thing. I'm not complaining about the growth of Anime here, just reflecting on what might be the led lining to a silver cloud. Last edited by Tempest on Mon Jun 21, 2004 4:41 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Yeah, this has been a long time coming. Early this year they had posted that they needed substantial donations to keep the site open. They got them and they soon after announced that they had enough funds to stay open for another year. Unfortunatly they had a massive rise in popularity after that and had to make another request for donations or else they'd have to close down in June. Well, here's June and they didn't get the numbers they needed. The rest is history.

Indeed, but in all fairness, it was mostly an anime porn site. Without charging its users, or doing a substantial amount of advertising, it's not surprising that they couldn't keep up with the bandwidth costs.

I'm not surprised it had to shut down. Quite frankly, most of the regular visitors were absolute idiots, and asking them for donations? Bound to fail, and fail bigtime.
It was a good site; nice place to find scans of the latest Newtypes, discover obscure anime titles, and that sort of thing. But the following it developed ultimately killed it...both in size and (lack of) maturity. |

Uhg, no kidding... So how far did you get through the "ADV goes after Fansubers" topic before getting a headache? I think I got to about 20 before all of the "OMG, ADV is z antichrist!!!!" posts got to me. Emerje |

I stayed well away from their message boards. One visit was too much for me, and the comments left in the image galleries were bad enough.

This wasn't on the forum (never went to the forum myself), it was right on the image board.

I am going to have to use that. The ADV goes after fansubbers thing was just like download anime's message board's post about One Piece being liscensed. I HATED 4chans message boards... |

I was interested from the start about whether 4chan would be successful. I even donated during the March fundraiser, because I wanted to see how long it'd survive.
Of course, I think everyone watching the site progress knew it was a doomed experiment. Whether you looked at the front page only, or you actually followed the politics internally (Buki^2's banning and subsequent departure, for instance), it was clear very early on (long before the March donation drive) that 4chan wasn't going to last long. moot is probably a good guy; he seemed to want to make a nice site that people could use for image posting. There was a lot of work done on the (terrible) futaba code to make it more usable. It still wasn't great, but it was better than nothing. The moderators did a fair job on keeping images off the site (when asked)... but really, almost every post to 4chan was a violation of someone's copyright.. I think the bulk of the blame for 4chan's death lies solely on the users of the site; most of whom were leeches. GNAA certainly didn't help things, but really, EVERY website gets attacked.. and not all attacks DoS or roothack. The fact that GNAA attacked 4chan is neither surprising nor unexpected. But if you look at the stats, it's really 4chan's own users who were killing the site. 70,000+ hosts/week, and they couldn't even manage a handful of banners or $400/mo for the server bills? Uh, yeah, SOMETHING'S wrong when you can't even scrape together 40 people a month willing to donate $10 to support the site. |
