So, with this out of the way, can we expect some more season previews from you, Bamboo?

Those ... bed sheets are perhaps the most disturbing sheets I have ever before encountered in my life. It's like... kid sheets meet porn. As hentai it seems kinda of harmless to me but sheets... just bizarre. |

Yeah, I've heard of body pillows for her as well, though they aren't as common as their bishoujou kin. Isn't that odd?
Anyway, whatever floats one's boat. Anything that helps lower the birth rate can't be all bad |

Until "This Ugly, Yet Beautiful World" I've always given Gainax the benefit of the doubt for any type of series they dip into cause usually that have decent success rate with me. But really HIMM never caught my attention just by title alone. Heck I didn't even know Gainax had a hand in that series and that still doesn't make me want to try it out now that I know. Heck, I didn't even know it was licensed. Plus I totally would defend Mahoromatic and EVA so that probably says a bit too.
But yeah, an okay Shelf Life. I think it be nice to try and work in at least 1 series you'd recommend but at the same time you basically did recommend Fist and Kenichii; just not your type of series in terms of collection-wise. Of course at the same time you don't know what you have until you watch it so its hard to say if you'll always get a shelf worthy series. I retract my first statement. It was a good Shelf Life. Thanks for the warning on HIMM everyone. I might check it when bored but not on the list anytime soon. |

Yup, that is Tama-nee on the dakimakura, but not Rukia in the framed art.
*clap clap clap* Both of those answers are correct! I'll go ahead and post a reference picture of the original figurine that was photographed:
When you close your eyelids again, true darkness comes in from above... lol.

jgreen, the 1st 3 episodes are on Anime Network on Demand (at least they are through Time Warner Cable) - if that's an option for you or anyone else interested... Last week they also added the 1st ep for HiMM, haven't watched it yet &, after reading this column, may skip it... |

Oh, and my "kid sister" is 21, so she bears little or no resemblance to any "little sister" anime characters. |

meh, I enjoyed HiMM, as I've said elsewhere, and for all the reasons stated in Theron's review, so I won't restate all that. Just to say that none of the girls take any sh*t from the protagonist, who himself is just a caricature of a hormone-infused teenager given what he perceives as the keys to the kingdom. The fact that he fails in that regard entirely should be a clue here as to the author's intentions, along with the mangaka being portrayed in a sweet and loving mature relationship (alligator and hamster in the clouds, Izumi's "gods" in the show) . No, it's not GAINAX's best effort, but it's far less politically incorrect than many other otaku bait shows.
At worst, the slapstick gags are overdone and get old. At best, it turns the stock characterizations in these shows on their heads. Demure, apologetic doormat women? None here. Emotionally abusive, semi-psychotic male protagonist somehow instantly loved by all women? Nope. Harem? Anti-harem. Constant panty shots? No. The first episode or two has some, along with a bath scene, in order to rope in the otaku, but afterward short skirts are about it for fanservice, besides a crazed yuri stalker played entirely for comedy. I mentioned in the Strike Witches "nude" news item the fact that people seem content with flying close-up crotch shots of pantied 14 year olds (or younger?), which panties are the official costumes of the girls in the show. Is that because there are no males? Is it because it thoughtfully examines female interrelationships in times of war? Uh, yeah. Umm... priorities here? What surprises me more is how much hate it's getting based on the girl's ages. They look similar to any other 14-20 year olds in otaku anime shows, and Izumi falls into the older range. I long since stopped paying attention to "official" ages in anime because they are entirely arbitrary. I see essentially zero effort at matching personality and maturity to age, particularly in comedy (which principle is not limited to anime). The latest most ludicrous example is Koromo in Saki. She's one of the better-drawn 10 year olds lately, except of course she is 16. Anyway, I am just pretty surprised at Bamboo's vehemence on this one. Feels much like a bee-in-the-bonnet situation to me . |

;p It seems to me that otaku only quote girls' ages when they *don't* look above 18. "Oh, she's actually 14? Well, she has giant breasts, a mature personality, and an intimate knowledge of Faust. In my mind, she's 18." "Well, yes, she has no breasts, looks like a little kid, makes meowy noises, and still cries when she drops her popsicle, but she's actually 18!" |

Wow, what a patronizing review of HiMM. Well, I know what I'm buying next. For the record, I don't have a younger sister, so neh.
