Hey all, after doing a 2 day marathon session on X (4 dvd's for 2 days in a row) I was wondering about the manga, since I've been picking up a couple lately (berserk, Trigun, Hellsing) From what I've heard, the manga is ratehr shoujo. I also hear it's still going. So that means theres 3 endings? the OVA, TV series and the manga? Pretty cool take, but what I really wanna know is how is the manga? Does it give more info than the anime? For example does it give more of a background on Seichiiro and Subaru? Most of the characters are very well developed for the short series (I wish it was at least 30 episodes) but oh well...Any thoughts on the manga before I start throwing down money?

First of all, the X OVA is just a prequel of the X TV series. Also, yes the manga covers a lot more of X than the TV series (though if you want more character interaction between Seichiiro and Subaru, also check out the Tokyo Babylon manga).

I am currently watching X tv... when you mention the OAV do u mean the movie or episode 00? From what I hear X tv, X the movie, and the manga all have different endings and many thing happen differently. (which I can clearly see between X tv and X the movie) Secondly, the tokyo babylon OAV (2 parts) gives backround on Seichiiro, Subaru, and Subaru's sister (forget her name) but they are only side stories which take place about 9 years before X. I havn't read the manga for X yet but hopefully i'll get around to it soon... but from what I have been told they're similar but different it a few way. Hope I could help you out a little bit.

Just to clear something up...
Seiichiro = Aoki, the Windcaster of the Ten no Ryuu.
Seishirou = the one-eyed Onmyouji who murdered Hokuto.
That said...

The Tokyo Babylon OVAs in themselves are really little more than filler offshoots from the manga series, which came before the X manga and told the full story concerning Subaru, Seishirou, & Hokuto.
Anyway, the X manga definitely goes into much more detail than the TV series, but also changes quite a few things. Subaru's actions after Seishirou's death are apparently quite different, as are Hinoto's actions when possessed by her "evil" form. Nataku's death is handled very differently from what I hear, and there are quite a few other character interactions that don't appear in the series (Kusanagi saving Kotori from BEAST, for example).

If you want background on Subaru and Seishirou, go pick up the Tokyo Babylon manga. The X manga never really explained the connection between the two, nor Hokuto, and seeing the what the characters were like 5-10 years before they show up in the X manga is a real treat. You get to learn things like how Seishirou lost his eye, why Subaru is so obsessed/guilty over it, ect. It's not as action packed or dramatic as X, but it's still fun. I'm really glad someone over here *Tokyopop* has finally brought it over.
And yeah, like everyone has said before, compared to the anime versions, the X manga is quite different, and really a lot better.
oh yeah, and if you're intrested in weird, alternate universe X stuff, several X characters have been showing up in Clamp's Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Example: Arashi and Sorata are a happy, married couple, Yuuto from the X movie shows up for a couple chapters, and so has Seishirou who btw is still as scary as ever. >.<*!! It doesn't add to the X story, but it's still fun to see the characters. The Sorata/Arashi moments alone are worth buying it... if you're a Sorata/Arashi fan. *They are SO cute in Tsubasa*

X is 8 DVDs, unless you picked up the terrible 6 disc from Siren, and even then that isn't 4 discs.

I think he meant 4 DVD's each day...
4x2=8 last I checked.

I have a question about the manga in relation to the movie and TV series.
Now, I haven't seen the movie nor have I read the manga, but there is a friend of mine who used to have the movie, and I later let him borrow the TV series.
I forgot how he described this particular scene, but he said he liked something in the movie over how it was presented in the TV series:
The appearance of the 2nd shin ken/Divine Sword.
I keep pestering him and telling him that I think the TV series is one of the best anime titles I've ever seen, yet he keeps insisting that because he thought the movie had a better presentation for that one spoiler I just mentioned, that the TV series isn't as great as I hype it to be.
So out of a little bit of fanboy spite I always claim to everyone that he hates this show and regards it as his least favorite of all-time (and he laughs everytime I say this, so it's all good natured. )
Anyway, my question is how did this part really happen in the manga?

In the movie Kamui pulls the sword out of Kitori's body as she's dieing. I'm pretty positive that's what happened.

Ah Nagisa, forgive me, the names in X always get me screwed up, just cause theres so many of em.
Thanks for the input everyone, very helpful. And indeed I meant 4 dvd's each day, but I was really tired when posting so I wasn't paying too much attention to grammer.
And JustinSane, I'm pretty sure the spoiler you posted is indeed what happens in the X movie.
On a side note, did anyone ever see the ORIGINAL X dub from many years ago before pioneer (i believe) redubbed it? It was on Cinemax or something one night, and I could barely stoach the proununciations of the charatcers...everyone pronounced each name a different way...pretty bad

Pioneer got the X tv series pretty much within a year of of its creation in Japan. They started releasing dvds while Japan was still releasing them. I think the dub you must of saw was of teh movie, which was released by Manga around 1999. *forgets the year Manga released it* I really can't stand the movie dub. The accent on Yuzuriha, as well as changing her whole death speech was just too annoying for me.

The TV series is crap compared to the manga. All the japanese fans hated it because of the ending. Frankly so did I. They should stop animating X till the creator actually finishes it the attempts so far have been half assed and shitty.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it half assed and shitty, and I can assure you that not "all of the Japanese fans hated it." I agree, the ending to the tv series did for me, suck, but it was an ending. I'm not sure of the details, but maybe it was another decoy ending that CLAMP came up with for the tv series. Sure, the tv series is a lot more different then the manga, but if you look at it as an anime without a manga, it's quite something. The animation was highclass for a tv series. Madhouse really outdid themselves with it. The voice actors were superb, and the music was nice. Other then the crappy ending, the story rocked too, but it was based on a really great manga to begin with, so that's to be expected. I loved seeing some of the fightscenes from the manga animated because frankly fightscenes in manga aren't are fun as seeing them in motion.
The movie was worse then the tv series, but not if you think of it as a sort of tribute, or gift to the fans. Other then the earlier X music video from what I think was 1993, fans weren't really able to see the manga brought to life. I think of the X movie as more of a visual treat. The animation was for me breathtaking, and I must say I love Sorata and Arashi's death scene in it. I also liked the ending to it more then the tv series.
If the X music video was the only X animation I had to look at I would be dying for something more at the moment. The artstyle in it was based off CLAMP's early style, and seeing their more detailed style animated and actually hearing characters speak is nice.
After saying all this, I agree with you that they should stop animating it until it's over. I hope now that's what they're planning. It makes one wonder if they have plans for anything at all when it's all done.

Also in the tv series the relationship between Fuma's mother and Kotori's mother isn't explained.
Some relationships are not fully explained in the tv series.
Also the manga is a lot more violent.
And some characters who died in the tv series are still alive in the manga
