do i have to watch all of the tv series before watching the movie? i watched like the first 5 minutes of the movie but couldnt understand a bit... so i was wondering if i have to watch all 26 (......) episodes before watching the movie?!
btw, is it on manga? it would be way easier to get them than the tv series...

Since the movie is a direct sequel to and culmination of the TV series' events, watching the series beforehand is undoubtedly a requirement.

The manga is an alternate version of the TV series with several significant differences. Not to mention it's being released at an excruciatingly slow rate and isn't even complete in Japan. You'd be best off getting the series if you want to understand the movie.

Since I haven't read the manga, I was wondering, what are some of the major differences with both the Manga and Anime? I'm fairly curious.

You will have absolutely no idea what's going on in the movies. If you watch the series first, you still may not know what's going on, but you'll have a better chance.

Really? I hadn't noticed significant differences between the two. Then again, I'm no Eva expert. I found the manga to be more enjoyable than the anime, though.

Well first of all a lot of the stories are not present from the series. The actual character development, scenes, etc are different as well.

The manga is written by a different person than the series so the entire execution of story and emotion is different I think.

Well you don't have to watch all 26 episodes if you don't want to. Episodes 25-26 are the original ending, that caused such an outcry in Japan. Some people like it, some don't, it plays out entirely in the minds of Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Misato, etc... So if you want, you can skip those, even though I would recommend watching them.

Also, when it comes to the movie, you can skip Death & Rebirth, unless you just really want to see it, because the first half, Death, is a recap of the series, Rebirth is the first part of End of Eva.

Even though "Death" (of "Death and Rebirth") summarizes the the first 24 episodes of the series, it is not a replacement for the series. So I would recommend watching the series first, even episodes 25 and 26 (which get "replaced" by 25' and 26' in End of Evangelion). Then watch Death, but don't watch "Rebirth," because that is the SAME thing as ep. 25' of The End of Evangelion. So finally, watch the the two concluding episodes of Evangelion in The End of Evangelion. It took me a little while to figure out all that when I first watched the series.

*Even though ep. 25' and 26' "replace" 25 and 26, they are supposedly compatible.[/i]

I wasn't suggesting to watch Death instead of the series, but rather to skip Death & Rebirth altogether. The whole point of Death was to be a refresher because by the time it had been made in Japan the series wasn't fresh in everyone's minds.

People have debated if they are compatible or not. From what I have read and seen, the events of EoE and the original eps 25 and 26 happen at the same time. EoE just shows more of the external, physical stuff with a little bit of internal, while the original eps deals with only the internal or mental if you prefer.

By the way, Welcome to the forums!

Vaguely. The original ending of Eva (the tv series) sucked so much that the viewing public at large demanded Anno go back and re-do it. Or maybe Gainax just wanted to milk their franchise a wee bit more. Either way, the result was End of Eva, a 're-telling' of episodes 25 and 26. Although I hated the series with a dark, burning passion I normally reserve for the N-Gage, I loved the movie to bits. So although it's origins may be a little confusing, End of Evangelion is still one damn fine piece of animation. That is all.

Yes the only reason that Death and Rebirth was made was as a filler until they could finish EoE and to refresh everyones memory (since the series had been out a while by the time the movie was made)
