I do not understand why there is an english cast, and yet there is still no english dub. Is the english cast on its way to dubbing Emma: A Victorian Romance, or is it just false information that was not suppose to be provided? I know that Emma has been subbed into english, but the information on Emma's english cast is very confusing. I hope there will be clarifications soon. Thank you.

I assume you're taking this information from it's Enyclopedia entry? In that case, yes, it was dubbed, but by Animax Asia, and not by any of the R1 companies or the studios they contract work out to. As such, there is no officially dub for the R1 market, and the release remains sub-only.

AFAIK, Animax's English feed is broadcast in Southeast Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc.). |

That's one thing that surprised me. Couldn't Nozomi Entertainment have just paid for the rights to use the dub in their version of it? I'm sure it would have been cheaper than trying to dub it themselves.

If this title is not dubbed using actual British VA's it would be a complete waste of money. I won't purchase another Mary Poppins, my ears wouldn't stand it.

That was my gripe about the entire situation too. If it was going to be Americans forcing a British accent, it'd be awful, and noticeable. Oh well, it's not like Bandai, FUNi, or ADV would have picked this up anyway. |

While a dub would have been nice, I agree with this sentiment. It just would not have sounded right if the cast were not British, and only mediocre if it were an American/Canadian cast forcing a British accent. Although I'll admit that the accents in Mary Poppins went over my head as a kid. We just liked the dancing and the singing, and sort of ignored the obvious flaws in their voices. They're a bit grating now. |

With regards to Right Stuf/Nozomi's other series, Gakuen Alice was as well sub only even though there was a dub by Animax.
For Emma, they probably didn't get the rights to produce it for the US, or they just didn't want to. |

I agree, Emma should have definitely gotten a dub. It maybe shojo but it's not what I consider a niche title. As for the voice acting, yes, actual British VAs would be good but most dubbing is done in the US. But they did find some British VAs for Hellsing so it's not impossible. (Yes, they were British except for Crispin/Alucard and K.T./Seras; it was mentioned in the commentary.) As for Mary Poppins, I looked it up and most of the main cast was British; Dick Van Dyke was the only American. Not the only American in the entire show of course, but the only one playing a major character.

I just checked it out and didn't hear any of the Japanese VA use a fake British accent, so why would the Americans have to? |

Because Emma is set in Victorian England and since the dub cast would be speaking English, it would sound more authentic that way.
Assuming they could get some actual British VAs or some American ones who can do a good British accent, of course. |
