How do you prefer your anime? Dubbed into English or kept in Japanese with English subtitles?
I prefer anime to be dubbed into English because I just love watching stuff in English, not Japanese. Subbed versions are great as well, but I speak English and therefore I want things to be in English dubbed format...anyone else? |

I prefer dubbed. I'm under the belief that television is to be watched, not read. Since I can't understand the Japanese language, a good dub accomplishes the same thing in my opinion.

I watch subtitles alot more than I do dubs probably because I'm lead to believe that is the better way.

I prefer to watch anime subtitled, simply because I've done it like that for so long that I'm just too used to it. I'll watch a dub that's good though, and some anime I even prefer dubbed (FLCL, Cowboy Bebop). Of course, there are some dubs that are so bad I can't stand them (Utena, for one), but those aren't that common.

I usually perfer subbed versions. But occasionally I listen to dubbed anime, such as Tenchi Muyo or Onegai Teacher.

Subbed until it is licensed, and then dubbed after it is licensed. I'm really happy with the direction that dub companies have been taking lately. Namely with series that I saw the series in Japanese with subs first.

Subtitled, almost always. I feel like dubbing takes away part of the overall "quality" of the anime because the Japanese vocing is done how the producers imagined it so (I'll admit, they're mostly the same, but there are exceptions). The only except I've made was for Cowboy Bebop because this I felt the dubbing added to the overall feel of the anime.
Of course, that means I have to watch my anime five times in order to catch everything missed by reading the subtitles. For me, a small price to pay. |

I watch about 70% of my anime in Japanese.
I think some dubs can ruin shows because of bad voice acting which takes away (most to all of) the emotion and sentiment I can acquire for the characters and overall story, but there are a few dubs I really like. For the most part though, I feel if a show takes place in Japan, then it only makes sense to watch that show in Japanese. I don't know, I just really like that foreign appeal (I'm so tired of English  j/k.)
I am also more critical on dubs of shows I really like. The more I like it, the higher my standards go. Well anyway, it's just a personal preference.

I usually take my Anime subbed, but sometimes I prefer the dub. Take Cowboy Bebop for example. The dub is excellent. And especially in the movie, the sub just seems bland compared to the dub.

I prefer watching my DVDs dubbed. There's been plenty of animes I've seen all the fan subs of, such as Outlaw star and most of Inuyasha.
It is sometimes hard to make a transition from one to the other. I could not stand the American voice for Gene Starwind in Outlaw Star after watching the subs. So in my opinion, it's best to pick one or the other and stick with it for a whole series. |

Subbed.
I watch a lot of foreign films, which usually only come subbed, so I'm used to it. I am so used to it that I can read the subs, and watch the anime...wow. Sometimes I even switch to the alternate language tracks on DVDs of American productions just so I can watch it subbed. P.S. That last part was a joke. |

I prefer to watch mine subbed. If it's made in Japan, it was most likely intended for that audience. There are cultural nuances often left out or changed that don't translate well into English. This isn't to say that dubs can't be well done. I have found that in some cases, the dub can be done better (this is rare) or at least can rival the Japanese track in relaying the story and theme intended.
As such, it's pretty simple. If Japanese culture plays a relatively strong role, it should stay in Japanese. If it's not relied on, dubs stand a stronger chance at being well done. These are just my personal tastes though, YMMV. |
