Is Miaka a more appealing heroine in the manga than in the anime? Because she was generally useless there without a bunch of men to help her. I much preferred Ceres: Celestial Legend for that reason (in spite of her idiotic attempt to justify a rape attempt...).

If you don't like Miaka in the anime, you are highly unlikely to think much differently of her in the manga. The adaptation is extremely close, to the point where panels are completely recreated. The only main difference is the ending itself, where spoiler[in the anime it is Tamahome that comes back, while in the manga it is his re-incarnated self Taka that appears.]

Ugh. I really should start picking up the VIZBIG editions of this (being my favorite manga and all.) But I really am still bitter about being left with 8 volumes from the original, incomplete left-to-right printing. I mean, you can't even get the earlier volumes of the "Shojo" line printing. Stupid expensive hobby...

Oh yes, forgot I bought these too. What was I thinking - they didn't even publish a full chapter each issue!

If there's one good thing to be said about the rise of Tokyopop (nee Mixx) it that it drove down the cost of all English translated manga in print. That's about the only good thing I can say.

I have all 8 volumes of the Animerica Books. They are so weird to read now a days. I just re-read this series last week and fell in love with it all over again. Watase's art as changed so much over the years (look at her FY: Genbu Gaiden). She has grown so much as a manga artist. Even her newish Sakura Gari shows how much she has grown as a mangaka, although many people were not pleased she decided on a BL title (if i remember correctly in one of her side panels in one of her earlier works, she said she could never draw BL)

My experience with Yuu Watase is that at first I'm pulled into her fantastic worlds through her initial story building, only to be dissapointed with plot developments midway and giving up on the story.

Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden has been a pure pleasure so far, and I'm just hoping that if Watase sticks to her guns this time, it'll be her best shojo fantasy yet. (For example, characters from book-world should stay in book-world, no matter what the fans want, even if the ending is bittersweet).

Reading Genbu Kaiden does make me want to give the original a second chance.

BTW, even if Miaka had a cell phone, I can't imagine that the service from literary acient China would be all that great. Communica(ing by hair ribbon is creative!

I kind of feel the same way, I never felt that Ceres lived up to the tone it set at the beginning, but I always carry on to the end hoping that it'll be worth my while.

Does anyone know how many of these big editions there are going to be? I quite fancy owning them but not if it's going to cost too much.

well they cover 3 volumes in each, and with 18 books total, there should be 6 BIG editions.
