First to the mods: you may be tempted to move this thread to the Retail forum, but I honestly don't think it belongs there. In any case, read on and make the call, but I think it should stay in the anime forum.
Normally, when I buy DVDs it is with the intent of holding on to them for all time. However, sometimes you end up with something stanky and the temptation to minorly recoup your loss by selling it to a used DVD place is high.
When something is an out and out stinker, it's an easy call, but I find myself on the fence about a few things I own. I haven't finished Blue Gender yet and it's been a real slog. The odds of me re-watching the series again are pretty low. And yet, I'm reluctant to pull the trigger on it (once I have finished watching it). I'll have to think about it.
I enjoyed Best Student Council, but again, I'm far from sure I'll ever re-watch it. I suppose I can see myself cherry-picking a few episodes in the years to come, but a full re-watch? Unlikely. Yet again, I hesitate to sell. Also, I have some friends who have daughters who may get a kick out of it.
Desert Punk is another series I doubt I'd re-watch end to end, but the tinbox it comes in is so cool, I think I'll hold on to it.
What about you? Do you ever have qualms about selling? Have you ever sold something and then kicked yourself later? What factors go into your decisions when you are on the fence about a series?

I personally keep my DVDs (and Videos) of series that I don't like (like my 5 worsts) to remind myself of what I don't like there for everyone to see. So it keeps it in perspective for myself "Don't get series like this!" or "Don't be lured in by just a low price!"
Also I like to show what I have and people's tast varies but I'm sure my collection (as being described as "eclectic" and "hard to determine what I like by looking at it.") Mean I may not exactly have your favorite series but I will likely have something that you may like. It also help to have a varied collection so you can get the "right" series to introduce others to anime and sometimes you have a mood strike you and it be a problem if you didn't have something to fulfill it (like me when I said, You know I'm going to try a romantic school comedy, what the latest one that can appeal to me? Thus School Rumble was purchased after looking online reviews for several Romantic school comedies)
If I'm on the fence about a series (to buy mind) I look at reviews and friend/family reccomendations to me into account. If finally all of that is not enough I move to legal streaming if it is an option. (like what I did with Gun Frontier and Ramen Fighter Miki)

I would sell a few things if there were someplace around that would take them, but there isn't. I really don't want to bother with setting up something on Ebay either though I know it's also a possibillity. So, the unshelfworthy just goes into a plastic container in my basement and there it sits until our next garrage sale whenever we decide we've accumulated too much s***.
Anyway, unless you actively hate it at the end of the film or series, then I would suggest keeping it as you never know. Sometime down the line you may be thinking about it and wish you hadn't gotten rid of it.
I definitely would not sell Blue Gender though. I really liked that one. It has some of the best character development I've ever seen in a work, not just anime. It's not exactly the most cheery of series and thus I don't rewatch it unless I'm in the mood for it, but I definitely enjoyed the fact that it doesn't pull it punches and is quite extreme, not to mention that the two main characters who were at first detestable turn arround and become decent people as they're changed by all the horrible experiences they go through and their love for each other. In the end I found it to be a very full and satisfying series.

This topic somewhat puzzles me. I don't think I'd ever buy anime on a whim, not to the point where I regret its purchase later. Then again, the number of anime titles in my collection number less than a dozen. Do a lot of people buy random anime just to take a chance on it?
Wait, I guess I do have one title I bought and regretted later. And one I am indifferent about but at least it was a gift and not a purchase...

Yes, as only about 10% of anime available here actually gets on TV or streamed or whatever to the point where it's free and also legal to watch it. If you want to see the rest you have to buy it. Thus you have to base these purchases on forum heresay, reviews, plot descriptions, the usually lame and unhelpful trailers, or blind buying. None of which are sure fire methods so you're bound to end up with duds sometimes.

Well, using Blue Gender as an example, I had streamed the first episode on ANN and really liked it. On the strength of that, I bought it (relatively) cheaply from TRSI. It held my attention for the first 5 or 6 episodes and then my interest started to wane, with periodic spikes of mild enjoyment after that. So even if I had streamed more episodes than just the first, I probably would have still ended up buying it.
I'm not the type that actually previews an entire series before deciding to buy.
Here's another weird example from the effed up clutter that is my mind. Really digging the first season of Hell Girl. Very glad I own it. Will probably never re-watch from beginning to end, may not even ever cherry pick episodes. Have zero interest in selling. Go figure.

I tend to both blind buy and do a lot of research before buying things usually. But I've been finding that highly researched buys don't necessarily mean I liked it more, I've sold plenty of higher researched ones and kept probably more blind buys. For me, both Key the Metal Idol and Noein were more or less blind buys, but they're both among all time favorites. On the other hand, I did lots of research on Kurau, but I'd rather sell it because I didn't like it as much or enough to want to watch it again.
It'll always be a case by case basis, same thing applies to my videogames, if I'm not sure, keep it for now and sell it later. Some things will always have permanent positions in my game, anime, and manga collections, but if I'm on the line, I keep it.
*edit, oh, and Shingu, total blind buy for me that I got at the same time as Kurau (to avoid S&H costs) but preferred it much more. The blind buy won out here.

I just went through the total titles I currently have prompted by this topic and the grand total of titles relegated to "the box" is 49 out of my total anime anime collection of about 690.

I did a lot of blind buying when I was newer in the fandom. And, I've sold many of those DVDs with no regrets. However, I only got a fraction of what I paid for them.
After learning a few expensive lessons that way, I joined Netflix. I rent everything first, then decide what to buy. Like Blood said about streaming, you can still get burned. I try to head that off by renting an entire series before buying it, or at least watch a majority of it before making that decision.

I've bought things for cheap before and watched it all the way through. If I didn't like it, I'd bite the bullet and sell it to Movie Stop for a pittance, but then it goes to buying some of the stuff they have there. If you have an anime club, see if you can arrange a Garage sale or something in the club where people bring it all kinds of merch to buy and sell or trade.
As far as DVDs, I only try to buy stuff that I think I'll really like, unless it's just so ridiculously cheap that it really doesn't matter.

My policy is to keep it for a while after I watched it once. If I never have to urge to watch it again then I sell it. If you honestly think that you'll never watch the dvd again, then there's no point in having it. You should sell it so someone ells has the chance to watch it, maybe they'll like it more. If you don't sell it then it will just build up dust on your shelf. But you shouldn't sell it right away, give it time, you never know when you might get the urge to watch it again. I'd say wait a year or so and if you still don't want to watch it again, cash it in.

Honestly, unless you got the DVD for dirt cheap, or are really strapped for cash, the amount of money you would recoup would be pretty darn slim. Unless of course you have an OOP item (kinda like my Vol 12 of Aura Battler Dunbine) you might only make a couple of bucks out of the transaction, and personally, if you don't make enough money to make it worthwhile, it isn't worth it.
But hey, Amazon Marketplace and Ebay might be good picks if you HAVE to sell.

I live in Toronto so selling any anime DVDs I want to get rid of would be a snap; I know several places that would buy them. It's true I'd only get back a fraction of what I paid out, but there is no point in hanging on to something you don't like. It frees up shelf space and the pittance I'd get could be put towards another purchase.
I'm just not sure yet if I can part with any anime. I've sold non-anime DVDs before, but that is generally when I've replaced one title with a better version. I watched about 10 minutes of Comic Party a few days ago and it might be a candidate, though.

Divergence Eve is the only title in my collection I'd sell, provided anyone would buy it.
I know I didn't give some good semi-reviews to some of my DVDs (Comic Par, er, Funeral), but they're not that bad to sell off.
I'd sooner sell my movie collection, left testicle, Wii, car, house, and/or wife than my anime.

Oh yeah, I forgot about some of my other reasoning: limited shelf space. If I had more shelf space, I'd get and keep more series, but until that's true, I'll be selling off titles I don't want. And my manga shelf space is temporarily 99.9% full (I could fit maybe one more book in there, which will probably be Parasyte v 8 next month). Seriously, when my shelves are full, I tend to buy less stuff overall, unless I consider it must have, like Gurren Lagann! Then it's shelf space be damned! But yes, selling stuff helps my shelf space issues a lot.
I might be getting some better shelving soon, just in time for Otakon, hehe!
