No, really. Have you ever tried to buy a manga, but the bookstore stopped you? I mean, I understand that the ratings are there for a reason, but I'm pretty sure that most of us have encountered this before. Like, I tried to buy Loveless when I was 13...and they stopped me. Ever since then, I've avoided trying to buy 16+ manga in that Borders...
It was really ironic though because I bought Gravitation a month before that (mind that I was just getting into that kind of stuff at the time, so I just went with something popular), and my friends can go pick up something like Junjou Romantica without getting stopped. So yeah, this happen to anyone else? |

no o.o~ i don't think the Cashiers where i live care that much.
( i remember buying Inuyasha when i was like 12 and it was rated OT for older teen, and it had brief nudity or something D: lol. ) And now i'm 18 So... i'll likely never get stopped now lol. But I've actually bought Stuff For Friends because they were worried about getting stopped xD;; nya... but the cashiers just didn't care either way. |

It's funny that you mention Loveless. I had the bookstore place a hold on Loveless 3 and the cashier did ask me if I was 18. The first and only time it ever happened to me. I have never had it happen to me since then. I just chalked it up as a weird cashier or a newbie who wanted to follow the letter of the store policy.

Oh, that happened to me & friends before.
My friend was trying to buy Sensual Phrase and cleary it's a rated M series xD So the lady had every right to stop us. But after that, she kept harrassing us like we were gonna steal something. Goodness, we weren't THAT desperate 
Though my friend has gotten away with buying the other volumes in other book stores >.> Some people don't do their jobs...lol |

Nope, I'm 26, age limitations don't apply anymore. I've never even got carded...it's probably the mustache and beard.

Nah, I'm 20.
People use to think I was majority age back when I was a teen, though, same here with the beard. Tried to get me to register to vote and all. |

Nope, I'm 20, but I've never been carded on manga (even before I was 18). I'm carded on just about everything else though because I can still pass for a 17 year old (and will totally lie to people asking for surveys by saying I'm underage). Movies, videogame, R rated DVDs, you name it, I'm still carded for it. I'll probably be carded for alcohol until I'm 30. The only place where they don't card me is the local Gamestops, because I'm in there often enough to where they know I'm over 18 (I got my God of War PSP and questioned why they didn't card me and they said it was because I was in there all the time and they sorta know).
It's fun to see their skeptic looks though! |

I'm really not surprised. More laws are being passed on checking IDs for ages for 18+ items. I work at EB Games, so we always have to ask an 8 year old where their parent is before they buy Grand Theft Auto >_> Many other places seem to be doing it, like with buying movies.
I still like how here in Canada, how the ratings are always LOWER (concerning movies). With Resident Evil Degeneration being rated R in America, it's only 14+ here. Still, the Walmart till was set for the American rating and I was asked how old I was >_> (Sometimes I forget I'm 21 but I really do look younger!) As for books... well, I mostly got my rated 'older teens' from the local comic shop (cheaper than bookstores >_>) and they aren't too worried about it since I guess I look my age (and well, I always wander in there^^) |

hrm back in the mid 90's most cashiers didn't even know what manga was. probably thought it was just comics.
Bought "Dance till Tomorrow" from Borders back then, cashier didn't even glance at it. |

Nope it has never happened to me before. Now that im 18 I know it will never happen.
 Even before when i was 15-16 cashiers never really cared when i purchase mature/18+ rated titles.

One of the benefits of being old is that I was already old enough to not have to worry about being carded when manga started being available.

No, not really. Of course I just started to really buy manga, and I'm old enough to not get questioned about it. I don't think I've ever had a problem with buying anything that was "inappropriate" for my age. i remember buying God of War when I was like 15, the guy just rang it up and said "have fun". This is the same situation with R rated movies, I never had a problem getting in, either because they don;t care, or because they just assume I'm old enough (I look a bit older than I am).
I have actually talked to some of my friends who work at places like book stores, theaters, and video game store, and they said that they don't really care unless the manager is there. I think the fact that this happened to you was just bad luck. |

I once asked the bookstore about buying a copy of Ranma 1/2 when I was 13 if I need to be at a certian age to buy it or not. They said that they had no problem with me buying it.
However, my parents have prevented me on occasion from buying manga that they thought was too graphic or sexual (They've stopped me from buying Monster, Girls Bravo, and The Drifting Classroom). Now that I can drive and all, that no longer holds a problem for me. |

That's funny, because it was serialized in Shounen Sunday 
I've never been stopped, this is the Netherlands afterall. Some of the most popular comics read by children and teenagers have full frontal nudity. Comics serialized in SjoSji for instance, would be considered mature and even vulgar by many Americans, but were commonly read by 10-12 year olds. I have had one awkward conversation, though. It was somewhere in 2002. Me: Hello, I was wondering if you could import some German manga for me. I have a list of the titles and ISBN of the manga I'm looking for here. Bookstore person: Manga? Aren't you a bit too young for that? Of course, it was 2002 and the whole "manga = cartoon porn" thing was at its peak despite the popularity of Pokémon and Dragonball Z. The manga I was looking for? Inu Yasha. 15-year-old girls are supposed to read Inu Yasha, right? |
