I'm surprised this actually got a decent review. The animation was fantastic, and there were a few good twists, but I had so much trouble connecting with the main character, and both the female leads were really lame IMO. The plot isn't bad par say, it just moves so fast that you cant believe the actions of the characters sometimes :/ The ending sequence is gorgeous though. One of my favorites.

I always thought Jyu-Oh-Sei had massive pacing problems. The first 6 or 7 episodes or something were really fairly methodically paced, perhaps downright slow, and then all of a sudden events pass at an extremely fast clip over the last 4 or so episodes. It feels really disjointed, sloppy, and it's hard to but into its plot, especially towards the finish, when it allows so little time to establish itself.

I`d really like to know which series is hinted at here ... because I can`t think of any requiring brain power and popular enough to be hinted at like this - and I would really like to see that

I enjoyed this as good sf despite all its weaknesses like poor pacing and disjointed story-telling, up until the end. I thought the end was an over the top attempt to be artsy which failed because it used overkill thus grinding its point into the dirt so I no longer cared (it was pretty though).
(btw LeGuin may write about the softer sciences, but her sf is never short on scientific accuracy.  )

I was wondering about that as well. Two that come to mind are Texhnolyze and Code Geass (R2), although comparing these two in that way is nearly sacrilegious (sp?). |

I enjoyed this series for what it was, but I was surprised it got a decent review because this is Casey. From what I've seen she gives good reviews for 'good' titles and over-the-top bad reviews for titles meant to be general entertainment--like Origin, and dare I say I love this movie for what it is and am not ashamed of it.

That was my real gripe with it too. I liked the concept, liked the characters, really liked the art, but the ending especially was seriously rushed. If it had been a smidge longer, say, 12 or 13 episodes, it might have had a better pacing. Still, it's a pretty good series. I would have given it more Bs than As, but it's definitely worth taking a look at, particularly because it's in a box set. |

I'd like to hear the reviewer's thoughts on exactly what shows are "too hard to follow". If it's Eva, it isn't brain surgery, it's Freudian psychology. But that's another rant for another day.
I thought this show looked interesting, but I never deemed it a "must-watch". |

If Origin was meant to be 'general entertainment' then it fails big time because it's like watching a Miyazaki movie if Miyazaki were an untalented hack who didn't know how to make a good movie. |

I wish reviewers at ANN would stop spoiling for character deaths and suchlike. I might well have checked out the series based on the overall positive tone of the review, but I really don't want to know who dies before I start! *~Pips~* |

if you're referring to Thor's brother Rai, his death occurs really early (the first episode) and thus it's not so much a spoiler as he isn't an essential character to the plot. In other words knowing that Thor's brother is going to die going into this title won't ruin the series for you. |

Sorry, but I just don't see Origin the same way as you do. I can see how you like to persist that it's a godawful, terrible, irredeemable film, but when I sit down and watch it I'm watching a popcorn movie set in an interesting world with industrialists who try to live independently and those who try to coexist with the planet. In this movie there really are two sympathetic sides of the issue, something that lacked in Princess Mononoke, where the industrialists just want to wipe out the natural world and all the forest spirits were doing were protecting their homeland. You may feel like replying back to this post saying how foolishly wrong I am, but there's really nothing you can say to convince me that Origin is a non-worthwhile film.
