How do you guys decide on what new anime show to watch after completing your current series? Do you plan out what you would like to watch next before doing so, or does your decision depend on many different factors?
When I finish an anime series, I usually don't start another one immediately until the right mood hits me. It can be a week, or even a month before I decide to watch another show, which is mostly based on the time I have to pursue another one. And I almost always choose a genre that is different from the previous series (if I finished watching an action series, I will choose either a drama or comedy series, for example). |

I don't think it's really so much a matter to me as I'm usually working my way through a good 50 series at a given time. I may only watch an episode here or there sparingly, but I never finish watching a show without nothing else to move on to. Though sometimes when I have a large swath of free time, I'll just sit down and burn through a lot of series, like I plan on doing after finals end, I aim to get about 20 shows finished this break.

I just download any of the new shows that sound interesting (based on synopsisis and screenshots), and give them a watch. Any of the ones that I like, i keep picking up, those that I don't like, I stop picking up. Sometimes I pick up shows I only half like, and I just never get around to finishing them due to lack of time, as other shows end up taking priority.

Very simple; since I wait until I have collected all of one series before watching a single episode (if I am buying the DVDs), I usually have quite a few Anime around to choose from, since it can take a year or more for all the DVDs to be released. Because of that, when choosing the next series, first I narrow it down to those I have collected in full. If I have more than one left, I then go by what (if anything) I have heard about each series. The more things I have heard about a particular series (and the more good things I've heard), the more likely I am to want to watch that series next.
Really, at the end of the day, I'm going to watch them all anyway. I'm not going to shun a series I've paid good money for, and the order doesn't matter so much. As for not wanting to watch a series that is of the same genre as the last one you've watched, I struggle to understand that sentiment. I mean, if I watch a great samurai series such as Samurai 7, I'm actually more likely to want to watch another samurai series because I'm now hooked onto the cool idea of samurai slicing frigates in half with a three-foot sword. |

I don't have a method. I just download a torrent of something if it looks like it would be intresting.
Though sometimes, if the first few episodes look real promosing (as in I'll like it alot) I'll stop watching and purchase the official DVDs and start watching something else. I also usually don't watch just 1 show at a time. Usually it's more or like 3 or 4 but I'm the same way with video games. I can play 2-3 RPGs at a time. |

I can be a bit sporadic in my decisions, sometimes I'll just go based on past hype (although I tend to avoid shows at the height of their hype, I avoided Haruhi Suzumiya for a year to let the hype die down so I could enjoy it in peace), sometimes I'll go based on recommendations.
I prefer to get whole series in boxed sets if I can, although series like Mushi-shi and Cromartie High School don't seem to matter because you could really watch those in any order. I tend to want to watch a similar genre to the one I saw before, but not necessarily the same one. As in I might skip from sci-fi/drama to fantasy/drama. Then I'll randomly rewatch some comedy here and there (like Cro High or an episode of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi). When I get right down to it, its whatever strike my fancy the most at the time. If it fails to do so after a decent number of episodes and I hear from people that if you don't like it by then, don't bother, that's when I usually drop it. I usually watch other series in between to figure out the one that I've been waiting for to strike my fancy. If something caught my interest at first and its not currently, but odds are it will again, I'l usually stall it. Its all about what will interest and engage me the most at the time. Sometimes its not an anime at all, but a videogame (although lately it hasn't been games, except for Persona 3). |

I'm currently watching five series at one time, and I'm never going to do this again.
 I think I'll stick to one, maaaaybe two at a time.
I'm like dtm42 in that I have to have an entire series available to me before I just dive into it. So I go based on what I or my friends have or I can find at a library or legal viewing site. (I've seen my fair share of fansubs and cheap uploads, but I do try to avoid them and usually end up watching them because somebody lends me copies.) When you greatly prefer dubs anyway, it narrows the temptation to leech things. That, and because I am so critical in general, I only watch series that are heavily recommended to me or are seen as "great classics," etc. I almost never invest my time in "the newest thing" from Japan. Honestly, (despite evidence to the contrary that I discovered upon making MyAnime list,  ) I feel like there's too many great series out there that I haven't seen for me to waste my time on potential mediocrity or downright crap. I'm the same way with movies, my only greater artsy passion. Sadly, movies aren't as available to me because I'm the only person I know who delves in old classics like Kubrick or tries to see underrated films, so I have to go on my own budget...bleugh. (My movie library is still scads bigger than my anime library though.)
So for me to watch an anime, it has to be available from beginning to end (unless its an episodic or arc series that goes on for hundreds of episodes, which I'll usually just taste-test and move on) and it has to be reviewed well by my peers or sites like ANN. |

I usualy watch what ever I want. If there is something I really like, I will watch just that show.
If I don't become obsessed with it, I will watch that series with about 3 or 4 other series. But what I choose depeneds on my mood. Or if I like the way a show sounds. I may even choose a show just on the show's name. |

I use the usual Encyclopedia route myself, but I've found the Meta Anime Review Project to be of some use as well. There are a few oddities on the list, but I tend to agree with its results to a greater extent than I do with some other sources.

Well, since I usually start by seeing what's on the Anime Network on Demand list, I see what's there, then check the Encyclopedia on here. I read about it a little bit since ANoD doesn't give me a lot of info, then if it sounds like a good show to watch, I'll watch it.
Or if I heard of the show before via constant mentionings or something like that and I just see the name up there (such as with Boogiepop or with Nanaka 6/17), I just start watching and see if I like it. Which with those two examples I listed, I really did love them. ^^ |

If something catches my interest, I look it up in the encyclopedia here, then check out a trailer or the opening. It then goes on my "Want To See" list here. I also go choose a few of the series from the current season on the season previews this site has, and check them out if they look or sound interesting. How long it takes to see it depends but I usually go through anime like a raging wildfire, and watch about 15 to 20 something at a time.
As far as reviews go, I don't put much stock in them. I'd rather just try things myself. |

The first thing I do is when I hear of an anime for the first time is watch at some of the art. If there are some moronic smiling people in not the most detailed art, I know it's most probably not going to be something I like.
If that's not the case, I read a synopsis and watch a trailer. If I like, I'll watch. |

Whenever i feel like starting something new, the process goes pretty much like this:
1) decide what kind of show i want to watch. Do i wanna watch something fun, sad or thrilling? what about cheese factor? Something new and shiny or old and classic? 2) Combine what i have read in the reviews on ANN with the ratings on another anime database. It tends to give a pretty good view of the material. 3) get and watch. Of course there are exceptions when jump directly to nr. 2 or 3 but this is pretty much how it goes most of the time. This is how I chose things:
....Well, it's not very deep. Probably because I don't have much anime in my collection (Nadesico, GaoGaiGar, Capt. Herlock: Endless Odyssey, and Saber Marionette J). I'm still in DVD 2 of the first half of GaoGaiGar, too--I haven't seen Capt. Herlock or Saber J yet. |

Aside from ongoing shows that i watch weekly as they're released, i'll watch some older series based on recommendations. but usually the first thing i check out with anime is the art. if i like the character designs then i'll check it out and if i like it, i'll keep watching. sometimes i just catch a glimpse of a trailer and i get interested.
