Great job on the review! *sorry if this already has a thread, didn't see it* It was fair to the series, pointing out its weaknesses and strengths. I'm a giant moonie, but even I can admit that the fight scenes and ... well, those first few eps with jump roping and singing along while fighting stuff... were corny as can be, but yeah, it's proving to be quite entertaining.

The actresses do suck horribly though at the beginning. I don't think most had any acting experience before this, but most, if not all, improve vastly. The girl playing Usagi, Sawai Miyu, was really not the best at first, but now I find myself loving her with each episode. I think in the later half of the current episodes she's got the character down down pat, and is the perfect Usagi now in personality, as well as looks. The girl isn't gorgeous, but she has her pretty moments, much like Usagi. Also, pretty much everyone on all the Sailormoon forums covering the show agree that the most perfect actress for their character out of all of them Azama Myuu, who plays Sailor Jupiter. Mars I still have a bit of a dislike for her, but that's breaking down, and the same goes for Venus.

However, just when I'm starting to love the show to bits, and thinking they really did a great job on it, they pull a horrible marketing gimmick, possibly ruining their story that's grown in quality. Ep 26 is her intro, and she's a little 12 year old girl, running around in a clashy sailor fuku, with cat ears and a tail, and calling herself "Sailor Luna". >.< Oi. WHY?! I know the show is targeted towards kids, but they already had a kid senshi they could of brought in. They didn't need to bastardize Luna.

EDIT: I should mention it to since some people are bringing it up to me, but this isn't the 3rd incarnation of Sailormoon. There's a musical, nicknamed Sera Myu, that's been going on since 1993, since the anime started, and is still going strong in Japan, and offers a different version of the sailor moon story. The creator, Naoko Takeuchi, loves it to death.

Gah, forgot about the musicals...

Sailor Moon and shameless merchandising are utterly inseparable, it seems. Gotta love the irony when the script writers make fun of it:

Hikari: "I'm buying him chocolate so he'll like me."
Usagi: "I'm going to give the person I like a scarf that I made."
H: "They said on TV that giving homemade gifts could backfire."
U: "Oh! Then I better buy him some chocolate, instead."

Thanks for the comments.

For all it's campiness, I really have been enjoying the live action version. It's nice to see the changes though to the story. It's somewhat refreshing to see things that we haven't before. Now if they would work on the acting, and even moreso the cheesy choreography, it would be even better.

I find the cheesy acting and choreography part of the Sailor Moon Live Action charm. Everyone needs a good dramatic cape flip or expertly placed leap every now and then.

Lol, I couldn't agree more. Mamoru's actor REALLY annoys me, but then again, I can't really blame him much. Mamoru never really had a personality. The fightscenes in sailor moon have never been much, so it seems the liveaction show perfectly mimiced the corniness of Sailormoon all us fans love and are used to. Dunno if this is a good thing or not really, but... still doesn't mean that it wouldn't be better without better fighting scenes.

I'm just hoping this show survives long enough to get the outer senshi in there. *_* I so wanna see them. And if by some mircale, the Sailor Starlights. Most of the costumes in this show do need work, but I think their senshi costumes are perfect. Beryl's dress isn't bad either.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this, but I am sad to admit I actually like Motoki's character more in this then in the manga or anime. He seems to have a larger part in the story then he used to, and I'm sorry... but his Mokoto and turtle obsession is just so damn adorable. I love his actor. Still can't get over how upset he got in episode 2 after saying something he shouldn't of to Hina.

About time someone reviewed this title here. I've been following this series myself since day one. As a matter of fact, at the computer store I work at, I have one of the demo units playing the show all day. And we get a lot of comments from customers such as these:

"A live-action Sailor Moon? You got to be kidding me. Where can I get this?"

"Those girls are hot, especially Sailor Mars."

"When's this hitting the U.S." (I simply reply, "Never.")

Crying or Very sad I hate Toei. If this came out subbed on dvd here, even if cheaply done, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. But since Toei is so intent on not letting ANY Americans enjoy Sailormoon, especially it's live version incarnates *they really cracked down on companies selling the musical VHSs a while back because they were for the gaijinn market* that I'll have to probably invest in fansubs... or those... bad dvd knock offs.

They far more likely cracked down on them because they were bootlegs

No, not at all. These were legit R2 VHS, sold as imports on sites such as tokyopop when they were selling imports, and sold for about 40 bucks a tape. They really didn't want the American market to have them for some odd reason.

Well, on the genvid forums, there's speculation that Sailor Pluto may show her face soon...regardless...look for a new character in Episode 29.

Oh, and here's a pic of Sailor Luna if you're interested.

Lol, yeah, I frequent that forum a lot under my real name, Aila. I did a little cgi thing of this girl as Pluto, and the Sailor Luna as Chibi Moon for kicks.

The Pluto one came out badly... I have way too much time on my hands.

Gah, even with the green hair, that Alisa chick doesn't make a good Pluto. Let's hope she's really just a new villian character or something and not Pluto.

And that Chibi-usa one is just scary...however, she appears to make a better Chibi-usa than a Sailor Luna.

Even as US-based reviewers keep talking about how much Sailor Moon is a dead issue, the popularity of the franchise stays strong. I am amazed at the staying power of these mini-skirted characters! Even with the show in limited syndication in the US, it remains a hugely popular title.

According to statistics provided by the search engine Overture.com, Sailor Moon (as an Internet search term) actually increased in popularity this year. Using the latest, February 2004 numbers, Sailor Moon is more popular on the Intenet than the heavily promoted Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac. Sailor Moon is more popular than Yugioh or Yu Gi Oh (taking the terms individually), more popular than Hello Kitty, and far more popular than Gundam, Yu Yu Hakusho, or Rurouni Kenshin.

Keep in mind that Internet searches don't necessarily mean sales, and Sailor Moon's sales have definitely dropped off in recent years. As I wrote in the review, there's a decent chance the franchise could rise again, but at the moment, the show's US market power is nothing like it was five or six years ago.

I frequently get the feeling that the only way the U.S. market is going to get a kick start back on the in the franchise would be with the licenses of both the live-action version and with Stars... but somehow I'm rather doubtful that either one of them will ever see a release.
