L, Death Note vs. Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan Voting for the Incredible Shrinking Detective: Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa. Group A-18 Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs. Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher Voting for Kazundo Gouda. Group A-19 Makubex, Getbackers vs. Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka Voting for Urumi Kanzaki. Group A-20 Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Near, Death Note Voting for Major Kusanagi. Group A-21 Char Aznable/Casval Rem Daikun, UC-related Gundam titles vs. Ayumu Narumi, Spiral Voting for Char Aznable. Group A-22 Ryoko Uchida, Noein vs. Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico Neither of these appeal to me, but I'll go with Yurika Misumaru. Group A-23 Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku vs. Autor, Princess Tutu No question: Kou Shuurei. Group A-24 Miria, Claymore vs. Shikamaru Nara, Naruto Voting for Shikamaru. - abunai |

Second place is pretty awesome for random guesses. I'm really interested in seeing how far they take me!
Group A-17 Voting for: L, Death Note Reasons: At very least, this guy should give me some points until the end. L is just the smartest character I've encountered in anime and definitely I think he should keep going (till the end!). Group A-18 Voting for: Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher Reasons: His guide entry is easier for me to understand Group A-19 Voting for: Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka Reasons: Guide. Group A-20 Voting for: Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise Reasons: Ggultra2764's post, combined with the fact that I really, REALLY don't like Near. Group A-21 Voting for: Ayumu Narumi, Spiral Reasons: Guide. Group A-22 Voting for: Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico Reasons: Guide. Group A-23 Voting for: Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku Reasons: These two sound like they have similar intellectual abilities, but because Shuurei is the main character, she has the upper-hand because she has more time to demonstrate it. Group A-24 Voting for: Shikamaru Nara, Naruto Reasons: Guide, and the fact that he was seeded. |

Detailed minigame results. Get 'em while they're hot!
Group A-17 L, Death Note vs. Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan Voting For: L Reason: In this match up of super-sleuths, I'm rather unawed by Jimmy's work. For as many times as Light's pulled off a scheme exactly as planned, none of them were ever really enough spoiler[up to the one I don't count as him being responsible for.] Possibility of Change: No Group A-18 Kazundo Gohda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs. Choji Suitengou, Speed Grapher Voting For: Gohda Reason: Possibility of Change: Changed Group A-19 MakubeX, GetBackers vs. Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka Voting For: MakubeX Reason: While MakubeX does have a slightly unfair advantage of having a superpower, he's quite successful in his manipulations spoiler[(he's defeated in the IL arc mainly because he doesn't really want to blow up the world).] Of course, Urumi is pretty terrifying in scope of what she can do completely on her own. Possibility of Change: Yes Group A-20 Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Near, Death Note Voting For: Motoko Reason: Near strikes me as a somewhat hollow imitation of L, and Motoko has a wider array of skills that require significant brains to use properly. Possibility of Change: Slim Group A-21 Char Aznable, Mobile Suit Gundam UC-related Gundam titles vs. Ayumu Narumi, Spiral Voting For: Ayumu Reason: His description kind of reminds me of John Doe (from the TV series of the same name). Possibility of Change: Yes Group A-22 Ryoko Uchida, Noein vs. Yurika Misumaru, Martian Succesor Nadesico Voting For: Uchida Reason: She's not a ditz. Possibility of Change: Slim Group A-23 Shuurei Kou-Hong, Story of Saiunkoku vs. Autor, Princess Tutu Voting For: Shuurei Reason: I didn't even think Autor was good enough to move out of the first round. His tendency to let his pride guide his (in)action rather than help (or even subtley guide) Fakir to find a solution loses him my vote. Possibility of Change: No Group A-24 Miria, Claymore vs. Shikamaru, Naruto Voting For: Shikamaru Reason: It hurts me to vote against Miria, but like guet said, she just doesn't get enough time to show her stuff. Shikamaru has the right stuff to move on. Possibility of Change: Slim Last edited by Dorcas_Aurelia on Mon Nov 03, 2008 11:26 pm; edited 2 times in total |

Group A-17
L, Death Note vs. Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan Voting For: L Reason: Both the same archetype, both brilliant, and Jimmy's such classical genius that I wish he could go farther, but no one does "insanely clever" quite like L. Jimmy takes a while to solve a lot of tough cases, whereas we only see L work on one, but we get the feeling he could solve all of Jimmy's cases with the bat of an eyelash. And we all know Jimmy would die of a heart attack the moment he set foot on the Kira case, given his methods. It's just darker stakes, a more thrill-based and less camp-based mystery format and more understated brilliance. L wins. Group A-18 Kazundo Gohda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs. Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher Voting For: Gohda. Reason: Suitengu barely made it here, and I definitely didn't vote for him. He's underwhelming compared to our friend Two-Face of the Lecter school of villainy. Group A-19 MakubeX, GetBackers vs. Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka Voting For: Urumi Reason: Urumi is wildly fun to watch at work and shows greater breadth of intelligence, and MakubeX is arguably a bit manipulated rather than the manipulator, displaying fair tact and excellent computer skills, but that's about it. This one just isn't much of a contest. Group A-20 Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Near, Death Note Voting For: Motoko Reason: The same argument I applied to her earlier still pops in here. Her tactical skills, networking abilities both with people and computers, and her coolheaded and perfect delivery of martial arts shows great breadth of intelligence. She brilliant in every field you could attach to her, and very entertaining and unique. Near is...a replacement. He's smart, but it's a contrived smart, and he's not too believable as a character, unlike L who is silly and strange but shows better layers. Near is also my biggest pet peeve: non-proactive. Mello makes up for his unwillingness to be aggressive, and he admits as much throughout the show. They're two split halves of L's personality, and I find that very uninteresting and a very forced intelligence. He plays with toys because they wanted to give him a tic like L has a tic, but it doesn't make sense with his character who, no matter how smart he is, spends most of his time sitting on his bum or belly and telling other people to do things for him...or, you know not do anything, cause it could be risky and they want to take it slow. Group A-21 Char Aznable, Mobile Suit Gundam UC-related Gundam titles vs. Ayumu Narumi, Spiral Voting For: Ayumu Reason: Char's a great tactician with the whole "mysterious me, bwah hah" thing going on, but Ayumu is and should be nearly seed quality on this bracket. Every episode he figures out impossible riddles and cases tied to him or the Blade Children, even while under the stress of having explosives attached to him or an enforced time limit, or both! But he's not monotone either, he acts like a regular teenage boy, albeit one with perfect deductive skills and the ambition and coolheadedness to put them into action. Spiral may have been a disappointing show, but Ayumu is a genius. Group A-22 Ryoko Uchida, Noein vs. Yurika Misumaru, Martian Succesor Nadesico Voting For: Ryoko Reason: A vote against Yurika. I just didn't see the smarts, much like I struggle with calling Testarossa smart, but to a MUCH greater degree, because at least Testarossa had complete know-how of her sub and spoiler[psychic powers] to support her. Group A-23 Shuurei Kou-Hong, Story of Saiunkoku vs. Autor, Princess Tutu Voting For: Shuurei Reason: Shuurei is the shizz. People have made enough arguments against Autor for me to further cement my choice. It's a different kind of clever from most of our other competitors, but it's just as valid, and she has to be proactive, tough and work circles harder than most, because she is a woman in that male-dominated society. Group A-24 Miria, Claymore vs. Shikamaru, Naruto Voting For: Shikamaru Reason: Miria's pretty perceptive and has a great hand in battle, but Shikamaru's a much more interesting kind of brilliant, like one of those smart kids that doesn't apply themselves because the universe would just magnetize around them if they did. He's not my favorite seed, but he made Naruto a lot more watchable and Miria's low on the totem-pole of credibility. |

Please add some spoiler tags. I agree with your point that Urumi probably has less power to exert her intelligence due to her role as a student, however; I do not think that this makes her less intelligent. In the setting that Kanzaki is in, her intelligence is truly frightening. |

Group A-17
L, Death Note vs. Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan Voting For: L Reason: Both are excellent detectives, but L is required to plan and deduct on a much higher level due to the nature of his opponent. Group A-18 Kazundo Gohda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs. Choji Suitengou, Speed Grapher Voting For: Kazundo Gohda Reason: They seem fairly similar, so I'm going with what I know. Group A-19 MakubeX, GetBackers vs. Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka Voting For: Urumi Kanzaki Reason: Based on the guide. Group A-20 Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Near, Death Note Voting For: Motoko Kusanagi Reason: Motoko has a much more varied set of skills. She's nearly untouchable as a hacker, she can analyze complex, politically charged situations, and she routinely makes shrewd tactical decisions, sometimes in a matter of seconds. Group A-21 Char Aznable, Mobile Suit Gundam UC-related Gundam titles vs. Ayumu Narumi, Spiral Voting For: Ayamu Narumi Reason: Based on the guide. Group A-22 Ryoko Uchida, Noein vs. Yurika Misumaru, Martian Succesor Nadesico Voting For: Ryoko Uchida Reason: Based on the guide. Group A-23 Shuurei Kou-Hong, Story of Saiunkoku vs. Autor, Princess Tutu Voting For: Shuurei Kou-Hong Reason: Based on the guide. Group A-24 Miria, Claymore vs. Shikamaru, Naruto Voting For: Shikamaru Reason: I'm not all that impressed with Shikamaru, but based on what others have said it doesn't seem like Miria displays her intelligence often enough for me to vote for her. After nearly 2 days of voting, here are current unofficial scores:
Match A-17: L leads 10-3. Match A-18: Kazundo Gohta leads 8-5. Match A-19: Urumi Kanzaki leads 10-3. Match A-20: The Major leads -4.9 Match A-21: Ayumu Narumi leads 7-6. Match A-22: Ryoko Uchida leads 9-4. Match A-23: Shuurei Kou leads 12-1. Match A-24: Shikamaru leads 10-3. And I shall start a voting campaign. VOTE FOR CHAR!! VOTE FOR CHAR!! If you want a classic example of leadership and cunning on the battlefield in an anime series, Char's your man. Friend and foe alike know just how meancing his tactics can be. Even his rival Amuro knows first hand just how cunning his rival can be. Char is confident throughout MSG in his abilities for the future of the Zion Principality, a confidence that Ayumu lacks in his battle with the Blade Children. So if you want to see one of anime's famous military leaders advance forward in this tourney, then please vote for Char. |

Group A-17
L, Death Note vs. Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan Voting For: L Reason: L is constantly pressured by Kira's presence, whereas Conan is given time to develop. L is superior. Group A-18 Kazundo Gohda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs. Choji Suitengou, Speed Grapher Voting For: Gohta Reason: He is the superior tactician, being ambitious enough to manipulate an entire country and even outwitting Section 9 in many cases. Group A-19 MakubeX, GetBackers vs. Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka Voting For: Urumi Kanzaki Reason: IQ of 200. 'nuff said. Group A-20 Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Near, Death Note Voting For: Motoko Kusanagi Reason: Motoko is the superior tactician. Not only does she possess leadership skills, top-of-the-line hacking skills, weapons mastery as well as being a philosopher of sorts, in the movies she is portrayed as having spoiler[fused with an A.I., arguably giving her hyper-intellect capacities for mass computation]. As such, she is by far superior to Near. Group A-21 Char Aznable, Mobile Suit Gundam UC-related Gundam titles vs. Ayumu Narumi, Spiral Voting For: Char Aznable Reason: Master tactician and seasoned soldier. Group A-22 Ryoko Uchida, Noein vs. Yurika Misumaru, Martian Succesor Nadesico Voting For: Ryoko Uchida Reason: I have a soft spot for physicists. Group A-23 Shuurei Kou-Hong, Story of Saiunkoku vs. Autor, Princess Tutu Voting For: Shuurei Reason: Guide. Group A-24 Miria, Claymore vs. Shikamaru, Naruto Voting For: Shikamaru Reason: Again, IQ of 200. He also demonstrates it, so the edge goes to this guy (as doubtful as it is to believe an IQ of 200 would display behavior such as his as opposed to something entirely different, but I digress). |

L, Death Note vs. Jummy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan L going with the one I know Group A-18 Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs. Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher Kazundo Gouda others comments Group A-19 Makubex, Getbackers vs. Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka Voting for Urumi Kanzaki. Group A-20 Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Near, Death Note Voting for Motoko Kusanagi. Near won against Light because L had given him information which he had collected. Group A-21 Char Aznable/Casval Rem Daikun, UC-related Gundam titles vs. Ayumu Narumi, Spiral Voting for AyumuNarumi. Group A-22 Ryoko Uchida, Noein vs. Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico Voting for Ryoko Uchida. Group A-23 Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku vs. Autor, Princess Tutu Voting for Shuurei Kou. Group A-24 Miria, Claymore vs. Shikamaru Nara, Naruto Voting for Shikamaru Nara. |

Group A-17: L. L would kick Jimmy's ass, no matter what case they would have to take on. To top that off, L is on the international level, where pray tell is Jimmy at?
Group A-18: Kazundo Gohda. One of my favorite evil-doers, Gohda has been putting time into some master plans, and when they involve Major Makoto having to try and foil them, then he's a pretty smart guy. Group A-19: Urumi Kanzaki. I'm having to base this one on the guide and what people have been saying about her. Group A-20: Motoko Kusanagi. NO contest here. On top of that, Near is only half of what L is, which means he can't stand up to the Major. Group A-21: Ayumu Narumi. Don't like Gundam. Group A-22: Yurika Misumaru. I think this was based on cuteness factor. I'm not convinced on either. Group A-23: Shuurei Kou/Hong. Autor? Who is that? Group A-24: Miria. Only helps when it's a Claymore character versus a Naruto character, so that made that choice pretty easy. |

L, Death Note vs. Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan Voting For: Jimmy Kudo Reason: Just for some variety, because everyone else will probably choose L. Possibility of Change: Maybe Group A-18 Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs. Choji Suitengou, Speed Grapher Voting For: Kazundo Gouda Reason: Gouda is more badder. Possibility of Change: Unlikely Group A-19 MakubeX, GetBackers vs. Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka Voting For: Urumi Kanzaki Reason: More variety of skill/intelligence. Possibility of Change: Maybe Group A-20 Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Near, Death Note Voting For: Motoko Kusanagi Reason: Kusanagi could kick Near's behind any day, mentally as well as physically. Possibility of Change: No Group A-21 Char Aznable, Mobile Suit Gundam UC-related Gundam titles vs. Ayumu Narumi, Spiral Voting For: Ayumu Narumi Reason: More interesting character. Possibility of Change: Maybe Group A-22 Ryoko Uchida, Noein vs. Yurika Misumaru, Martian Succesor Nadesico Voting For: Yurika Misumaru Reason: Hmm, hard choice. Uchida seems more peaceful, but Misumaru more interesting. Possibility of Change: Maybe Group A-23 Shuurei Kou-Hong, Story of Saiunkoku vs. Autor, Princess Tutu Voting For: Shuurei Kou-Hong Reason: Seems to show more intelligence-at-work. Possibility of Change: Slim Group A-24 Miria, Claymore vs. Shikamaru, Naruto Voting For: Miria Reason: A mere ninja is no match, mentally as well as physically, for a claymore. Possibility of Change: No |
