One of the patterns I've noticed among most, but not all, of my Anime watching friends as well as myself is the tendency to go on an Anime break where we go weeks to months without wanting to watch a single episode.
A common trait among these occurences (Possibly the only common trait) is that at the time we all seem to be watching a lot of Anime, but everything else is different. Some go on breaks after finishing a series while others (Such as myself) go on breaks right in the middle. Some people stop because they get depressed (Poor grades, craptastic new manager at work), other people when they're ecstatic and feel they have too much to do to just be sitting and watching Anime.
So my question to you is this, do you take extended breaks during which you don't watch any anime whatsoever (Even if you do check out ANN from time to time during the hiatus), and if so what are the circumstances surrounding them. Also, is this consistent with your other hobbies, whatever they might be?
As for why I ask, just curious

I haven't taken a break yet, but then again, it might only be because I'm only two years hardcore into the fandom. Why should I stop? It's such an easy and fun thing, the most a break would be would be slowing down of watching older shows to just focus on newer shows, which are far easier to watch with weekly releases.
I guess if you've been doing this for 10 years, and you only watch shows you buy, you might need more of a break.

For me it depends on what series I am watching and what else I have going on in my life at the same time. For shows that are quite long like GTO I would usually watch the first half of the series then take a break for a bit then watch the rest. I did have a fairly long break in anime for a while since I wasn't buying anime for several months but I did buy my share of manga to keep me busy. I only started buying anime again since April of this year. The reason why I stopped was because I was trying to pay off a majority of my medical bills that I have gotten since October of 06. Plus I also had my netflix queue that I got priority because I was paying to rent these DVD's and I wanted to get through them quickly so I sent them back.
EDIT: Once I fully recover from all my procedures and I start working out again I'll probably be watching less anime as a whole since I will be spending a majority of the time exercising and trying to get back in shape.
I think now my anime watching will just be weekends only every other week since my father now works daylight (he works 7 days then is off 7 days) and he gets home around 6:30 PM so I usually end up making dinner unless my mother is home or I don't feel like cooking. Though I may slip an episode in or two during the week that he works and probably when it starts to get dark sooner I will probably watch anime during the weeks he doesn't work.
This doesn't effect my other hobbies that I have at the moment. Usually after he comes home and after we eat I can play my video games in my room so it's no problem. However I'm trying to save us some money on our electric bill so I'm just trying to play my video games on the weekends only.

I tend to take breaks, but in short intervals, never months. I may stop watching a series for maybe a week or two if things are not going my way. But mostly, I just like to watch anime while doing some college assignments and studies, and through this I had become a dub lover!!!

I've just come out of a month or so hiatus...always seem to happen during holidays when I have too much free time I just didn't feel like watching anything.
However recently I've been burning through volumes of manga, and I've been watching Geass R2 frequently, having watched episode one and then not touching it for several weeks.
At times I've gone over a month without watching anything, before suddenly returning and watching a series in a few days.

I'd have to go with the thread-starter in that I don't watch anime when I'm depressed. Because I'm so picky, I like about 80% of my anime to be really challenging emotionally or intellectually or something. I like to really invest in what I'm spending time on. (That other 20% is dumb fun stuff: shonen fight shows and girly comedies when I'm bored.)
So I'm not gonna dig into that when I'm depressed. When I'm having a rough time I watch Disney movies and old black and white classics and I eat like a starved animal in heat...unhealthy stuff too. I keep anime out of it...
Still, the longest hiatus I've had without pursuing something new (since I've had the internet) can't have been any longer than two weeks.

Oh man, i do everything excessively, its kinda my thing. When i watch anime, i WATCH it, many many hours and many series bought and tv. When i go on a break i go all the way. Months without touching it.
But say i´m on a break of anime, then i´m doing something else like reading (excessively) or studying (excessively), hell even girlhunting . Last 2 months i was on WoW and didn't touch anime now i´ll cancel my subscription and go some months with the anime. Sarting college soon so i´ll have to learn how to balance

I recently came off a several month break from anime. Recently I finished Strait jacket and Macross Zero, which I can't even remember which series I watched before those two.
The reason for my break was I have other interest, and loss of interest to an extent. I just had had so much more I wanted to do with work, school, and even video games.
With work I recently got me an 8-5 Mon-Fri job so that is a a big part of my life now. And I go to school Mon and Wed so those days are full.
As for Video Games, which i prefer to play on the weekends, I currently own a PSP, DS, PS3, XBox 360, and a Wii. I have so many games for these systems that I've been wanting to complete... so I did and still have much more to go. I don't think too many PS3 owners have Metal Gear Solid 4 still sealed on their shelf that purchased it on release date. And I am a big Metal Gear fan; I have the NES cartridge, the ps1 version, GameCube remake, MGS2 Substance, MGS3 Subsistence and of course 4. I plan to start MGS4 within the week, for now I want to finish FFIV on the DS since I have a feeling I'm almost done and probably finish Ninja Gaiden 2 on Mentor since i'm on chapter 10. Plus I'm always down for some CoD4 when friends call me up to play.
As for loss of interest, there isn't anything out right now that I'm dying to watch. Nothing really caught my eye and I think it's largely due to the fact I loved Gundam00 so much that I really want the next season to start. I tried getting into Code Geass but my friend and I gave up at episode 8 due to being bored out of out minds from waiting for something to happen; cat got his helmet is not our idea of something happening.

I sometimes will take slight Hiati (plural?) off of anime, but they are all unintentional. Ususaly it's just becuase i'm too busy. For example, since i skate a lot, sometimes i'll skate a whole bunch and then will realize i havn't watched anime in a while so i'll kind of take a hiatus from skating and will become a couch potatoe watching anime non-stop. But sometimes it's evened out. But yeah, so since it hasn't really happened in a while, i have a feeling that it will happen soon. But it's interesting how it happens, beuase when i'm not on a hiatus, like one said before me, when i watch anime, i really watch anime. I'm realy into it, and money flies by like dust in the wind. So it's interestin'

If I have too much to do, I usually take at least a couple days away from watching anime. I still visit anime forums, check news on ANN, and post reviews on a site. But, that's just about as far away from anime as I normally get.

Well, I tape most of the new half-hour shows and random movies which my cable offers, which is usually 3-5 depending on when we're talking about, so that's easily enough new material for me. I have noticed I've been staying away from rewatching my collection and giving it a rest, though. It does seem to be a feast or famine hobby for me, because in a freakishly rare occurence being that I've been averaging only about two purchases a year, there are boatloads of anime being released this fall that I want to see enough to purchase blind. So I'll be quite busy with Emma Season 2, Ouran Part 1, the Tsubasa Season 1 set and probably the Aria the Animation set.
Considering I'm anticipating liking Ouran and Tsubasa enough to continue, the Tsubasa set means we can probably also anticipate at least one xxxHOLiC set next year as well if not two, and there will presumably be at least one more Aria release next year if I end up liking that as well, I'll be quite busy for a while - particularly if we also finally get some news about Honey and Clover. (Addendum - just saw that Ghost Hunt is coming out in 2 sets this fall as well, though unfortunately part 2 isn't quite coming out in time for Halloween viewing this time around, and it sounds like my cup of tea. That's it - my wallet is officially done for!)
Which means after all that's done, it will probably be five years before anything comes out that I consider buy-worthy again!

I generally squeeze in as much anime, among other things, as I can during summers. Which means I can go for weeks watching anime non-stop. Once summer is over though, I pretty much end all anime related things entirely and return to my normal life.
I'm about to return to school soon, so right now, I'm on the tail end of my anime streak.

A week at the most, and that's only during the holidays when work/exams is nuts. Otherwise, nope. I mainly watch through DVDs though, so if I haven't bought anything in a while, I mgiht have a dry period, but that's a good time for re-watch (I try to watch Bebop, FMA, Eva, and Samurai Champloo once a year, now adding Haruhi and Gurren Lagann to that annual list, and FLCL/Miyazaki is ALWAYS worth a re-visit even if I've already watched them recently). I probably won't run out for a while right now, plenty of stuff coming out this year to buy, and I've still got Naruto boxset #9, Samurai 7, Tweeny Witches, Inuyasha Seasons 3-4, and .hack/Sign to watch. Plus, the few shows I do watch through fansubs (Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, One Piece) are long-running (Soul Eater being the only short one right now), so I'll have a few episodes to watch every week at the least.

I'll take an unintentional break for about two weeks at a time. When these breaks occur, it usually means that I got incredibly logjammed with other things or it's a holiday. I'm on a break right now because school just started and I'm incredibly busy with that now.
Other than that, my anime watching is pretty regular.

I am currently on a long break right now myself. Of course that doesn't stop me from visiting ANN. In the last four months or so I have bought a few dvd's here and there, but have not watched any of them yet. The crazy thing is I really can't explain why I am taking such a break and have not had the urge to watch anything in a while.
I was on a similar break in 2001 but the difference was I did not have the funds to support my habit.
I assume that my current break will end very soon since I am leaving for Tokyo in less than 2 weeks and will be pretty much surrounded by it.
