Many people either like or dislike Captain Harlock. He's an all-out bad-@55 and has as many talents as friends. He stands for justice for all humans and those seeking peace and justice. Harlock sounds like a genuinely great guy.

What are your thoughts on Captain Harlock and/or his crew. Take into account characters from other parts of Matsumoto's universe.

This may not be the best picture of him, but it'll do for imagery.

I think Emeraldas kicks butt, and I want her outfit.

I'm not a giant fan of this series, but I've found things I love from them in what I've seen. Usually they put me to sleep.

The Matsumoto universe is timeless and I wholeheartedly believe that all anime fans should take in some Harlock during their time in the hobby.

And yes, littlegreenwolf, Emeraldas is a stone cold fox. Very Happy

Thing is, *Harlock* is kickass...but the Harlock-clones/ancestors in My Youth in Arcadia and The Cockpit are a bit too close to glorifying the Nazis for my comfort.

Like everyone says, it kicks a$$, but, it's on my long list of animes that I have to see. Especially this one since I love pirates so much.

Well I love Harlock.

His design is the definition of the classic anime hero to me.

One eye, scar, dressed in black, uncompromising honor. Like Kodai these are Matsumoto's pure hero that are timeless as ever for me. However the writing for these characters in modern serials where they appear does not lvie up to the originals IMHO.

I loved My Youth, galaxy 999, adieu galaxy 999, and SSX.

The Rheingold thing didn't do anything for me, I hated the Cockpit, and this new series, while having some promise, seems like the same old same old.

Like so many things, they should've left him alone after his original great moments.

As for the guy who thinks Harlock romanticizes the Axis powers, well yeah I can see that. It's the thing I hated most about The Cockpit. I'm not sure if I see that sort of stuff in his other works but...

Captain Harlock is one of the few original cool bad guys. He's awesome.

Errr, he's suppossed to be a good guy...

Literally the arch type of a hero.

He just wears the skull and cross bones to defy those who oppose freedom. In all the Harlock universes, the governments are all corrupt and repressing their people.

I like all the views shared so far. I think the Nazi thing is annoying, but adds to the generation that grew up on Space Battleship Yamato.

I haven't had the opportunity to see The Cockpit, but I think Harlock was dumbed down in Cosmo Warrior Zero (which came out about a year or so ago), but he was a younger version of himself. In fact he was EXTREMELY dumbed down for that series.

Anyway. I believe Harlock is the arch type for any crucial hero of the people.

Well I don't think of him as an anarchist...

That would imply a political agenda

He's got that "live free or die" thing going on for sure.

Uh, there is no Nazi glorifications in Arcadia of My Youth. Harlock is of German descent, so obviously his ancestor would be enlisted in the Nazi army during World War II. However, both him and Tochiro believe the war was stupid and both show desire to desert. Nothing pro-axis in that at all.

To an outside observer, sure. To me, no, it doesn't *matter* what the supposed reasons are. Harlock is flying a German plane and is presented as an admirable and admiration-worthy character...but *because* he is German, he can not be.

You're logic makes little sense to me. Just because Harlock was in the nazi army doesn't mean he was anti-Jew, etc. It just means he was a German citizen at the time, and was required to be in the army. It has nothing to do with promoting nazism. I don't think all the soldiers under fanatical leaders were bad people, but they had to serve under them becasue they had no choice. Perhaps, you should stop being sensative. I also think acting like certain pages in the history of earth didn't exist, would be quite idiotic. Just my opinion.
