I looked at the top 10 animes viewed by members of this site and as of Monday, Feburary 23, 2004, 10:30 PM U.S. Central Time, it goes like this:
# title/rating/seen by
1. Cowboy Bebop (TV)/9.00/775
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV)/8.40/659
3. Trigun (TV)/8.30/618
4. Rurouni Kenshin (TV)/8.30/600
5. Inu Yasha (TV)/7.60/583
6. Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (movie)/8.70/578
7. Dragon Ball Z (TV)/5.50/565
8. Akira (movie)/7.50/559
9. FLCL (OAV)/8.40/546
10.Princess Mononoke (movie)/8.90/535
Now, 6 of these have been aired on Cartoon Network, but the question is "are too many reruns a bad thing?"
Out of all of these series/movies (the only ones I haven't are FLCL and Mononoke), I've only seen one of them more than twice (Kenshin, 2 for the first 38 eps. and Kyoto 3 times), and two of them exactly twice (Akira and Bebop movie), and the rest of them only once (Inuyasha pending on an ending someday).
But I know a friend that can't stand Bebop anymore because of repeated reruns (he's seen every episode at least 4 times), and that some of the users here can't stand some of the others (I think I remember complaints about FLCL).
The only one I can't stand is DBZ, but that's my own personal vendetta. Anyway, I think Cartoon Network has done a great job in spreading the popularity of anime, but what do you all think of the same stuff over and over again?
I know they've got a lot of new stuff coming out this year, but I just wanted to comment on the other thing real quickly.

I see it this way:
They show reruns...and the fans complain.
They don't show reruns--meaning they show non-anime...and the fans complain.
The reruns are basically filler until they can get new stuff to air. It's a no win situation. I don't think it's good, I don't think it's bad. It's just a moot point. There's always someone out there who hasn't *gasp* seen Bebop or *double gasp* seen the Buu arc of DBZ, so reruns aren't really a bad thing. They just tend to irritate the people who watch CN all the time.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. I don't really get watch Cartoon Network very much anymore, so that's probably why it doesn't really affect me. As for everyone else who gets a chance to, I can understand.

I wish we had enough anime on television in Canada to get annoyed by reruns.

I don't mind a show getting several non-consecutive runs on a weekly schedule, but when a 26 episode series is run seven times in a row every day of the week... well, that's just overkill.
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for .hack//SIGN, Witch Hunter Robin, or Gundam SEED to debut on YTV this spring. I keep my hopes up that we'll one day get Fruits Basket, but the fact that it's owned by FUNimation seriously dampens its chances of airing. Even moreso than the fact that it's shoujo.

Anything with less that 52 episodes shouldn't be aired on a daily schedual. It's CN's fault for 5-day a weeking them so that they run the show into the ground

What do you want them to do, show them once a week? They would have to stagger a lot of series to fill up space since they wouldn't be showing episodes every day. Running them 2-3 times again is fine, because someone may have missed an episode and it gives them a chance to catch it again. I think it severely limits what they could show if you restricted the episode count to 52+ episodes. More times than not the 52+ episode series aren't very good...talk about running things into the ground, series that long usually run themselves into the ground.

Re-runs IMO are harmful. CN use to complete a series and then repeat the entire series from the beginning, esp for Adult Swim. I don’t know if they still do this as I have stopped watching the titles do not interest me. Anyways, I do not ENJOY re-runs at all. I would prefer a marathon for one set day/time. This would naturally have to be advertised well in advance to avoid surprises. For myself when there are re-runs I tune out and check back occasionally since I know the series episodes are not going to be consecutive, this happened with YYH. To this day I have not bothered to follow the series, too much grief.

anime reruns would be bad if they were taking the space of anime shows that have not been shown........
otherwise, reruns allow people to catch up with their favorite shows, which they wouldn't be able to watch because of their schedule.....I, for one, am particularly grateful when Adult Swim started to show their 10 -1 am slot a second time around from 1 -3 am (at least that's how it is where I'm from), since my work shift forced me to be an insomniac, late-night junkie.....granted that this is a different type of "rerun," but still.....

Actually that doesn't sound like a bad idea. Granted, you pointed out the advantage of people being able to catch up, but if Cartoon Network had enough anime to fill up every spot each week, do you think it would work?
Instead of just showing a handful of shows, how about showing several handfuls and giving a much bigger variety?
How do they do this in Japan anyway? Do they have blocks like Toonami and Adult Swim?

Personally, I don't mind reruns as long as they're in moderation. FLCL was run two or three times before being swapped out. Same with Big O. That's fine, I can agree to that. Or like TechTV does; run a show once, swap it out, and you'll see it again in a month or two in another spot (I just wish TechTV would make more of an effort to let you know which shows & when...).
But when a show's run constantly like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, or Inu-Yasha, it gets old. I know fanboys basically have Cartoon Network by the throat about this and their hands are tied if they want ratings, but that doesn't stop me from saying it gets real obnoxious real quick. Not just because the shows in question are being run into the ground, but because it leaves less spots to put new shows or shows that haven't gotten a run in months.

I think that the demand isn't high enough for CN to just show bunches and bunches of anime. I think in theory it would be really wonderful to do such a thing...but in reality, I think it would be too expensive for CN to change their lineup to something like that. Really...what you're talking about is almost what the Anime Network (or whatever it is) does.

Anime in Japan is run similar to US programming with an episode a week. With th upcoming schedule change, Inuyasha won't suffer from being overplayed.
