Sup Guys!
How are you guys doin'? I want to talk about a sore subject with me. END OF EVANGELION, that is!!! What was up with that? It was weird, disappointing, and just plain dissatisfying. Please help me! I am still trying to figure out the famous Asuka "You disgust me" quote. By the way, what do you think was the most disappointing moment? A. when Ritsuko dies B. when Asuka dies (supposedly) C. when Misato dies D. When Gendo or Asuka doesn't die (just kidding about Asuka) E. When Rei turns out to be not even a real person F. Shinji did not develop a backbone and kill every one of those flying Evas with one humongous shot G. When Lilith turns into Rei and Shinji goes crazy H. The ending I. EVERYTHING!!!!! Respond ASAP!! [EDIT - Topic Adjusted. BTW: Don't say "Respond ASAP". It's meaningless, wasted effort. -C] |

I choose Unfortunately Misplaced Option X: I thought End of Evangelion was absolutely brilliant, I was not disappointed at all, and short of spoiler[Shinji reaching drastically different decisions in each,] I felt it was a perfect companion to the equally-controversial TV ending.
Don't assume everyone hates it just because you do. |

We do have spoiler tags you know (Look at Nagisa's post for an example). As for EoE, yeah, it is depressing but it's kind of Anno's revenge for the rabid fanboys demanding a better ending.

Using the Gainax metaphor, I would say the ending is when Gainax decides to reject the ending the network wanted and instead make a new start with the movie. Which can be said to begin on the beach.
I liked the movie. It was weird, but deep, and contained brilliance and insanity in one package. If you didn't feel so, I must quote Anno. "Too Bad." |

I thought the original ending was quite sufficient. The ending, via the movies, seemed to keep with the original flow of the series a bit better (IMO).
I liked them both for what they were. Both were perfect in different artistic endeavors. Eh, there's a warning in the subject line, and it specifies a specific anime, so that would be redundant, and people that don't want to know and click on this thread anyway deserve to be spoiled for lacking discretion. |

Well you know what? It's Evangelion, what do you expect? The series leaves you confused and at the end of the series it just makes you go, "wtf???!!! what the f*** just happened???" So you should just accept the movie is as screwed up as the series and you will never find out what really happened except in the mind of fans

 The thing that had me really freaking out during that movie was when the Prototypes ate Asuka. I was going nuts in shock, and nothing else in that movie got that much emotion out of me.

This is the key, the ending is actually a happy one, but it is so brutal that the taste is ashes. |

I didn't find it dissapointing.
I stopped being enamoured with Evangelion (the first series I invested in, I might add) a long time ago, after showing it to friends repeatedly. But it will always be a favorite. I think the whole thing had a lot of excellent character development (aside from Shinji) and it was thoroughly enjoyable. A lot of the cryptic stuff is just that: cryptic. It has little bearing on what's actually going on, but makes for some interesting eye candy and speculation. As far as EoE. I thought it was great. I was one of the few people who really enjoyed the series ending (AFAICT) and got it, for the most part. I will say that the last part of the movie is one of the more insane and surreal things ever committed to film that I've ever seen. I think that the movie emulated the desperation and helplessness inherent in the plot-line, and really made you feel like the end of the world had arrived. It might fall just short of brilliant, but it will always be one of my favorites. I would hardly call the series or the movie(s) dissapointing. That last scene is just a snootch difficult to wrap your head around, but it is about as positive an ending as could have come from that little excursion. |

This is eerily similar to what happened to me. I played it for friends so much and spent so much time joining in on just about every "let's analyze the Kabbalah!" type Evangelion discussion you could think of that it kinda lost much of its lustre after a while and I had to take a lengthy break from it. Despite all that though, I still have a lot of admiration for the series (and movies) and still regard it as a personal favourite.
Now that you mention it, that does make a lot of sense. Never really thought of it that way, I always sort of figured "okay, TV series is the bittersweet happy ending, movies are the bittersweet downer ending." Guess they're both "happy" endings, in their own screwed up little way. |

All the bad things happening aside, I was just happy that no more bad things happened to Rei in the movie. I was really afraid that they were going to kill her again and this time she wouldn't come back or something.
I guess I would have liked to know what became of Rei after Shinji rejected complementation, but I'll take not knowing any day over knowing something bad happened. We see Rei briefly in the last scene and although I can’t figure out why she was there and why she went away again so quickly, I guess her showing up must mean that she is ok at least, maybe. |

It's been a while since I've watched it, but off the top of my head my only real beef with the movie is that parts seem to be too "theraputic for the creator" in ways that don't serve the integrity of the work; all that stuff about Shinji's gender communication issues didn't seem to come out of anything else in the story. It seemed that the creator was working out his issues, rather than serving the gestalt of the film.
Oh, one more; some of the voice-over philosophizing near the end gilds the lily to me. The visuals are so strong, why bother putting such essentially banal uplifting messages over them? |

Well, I've only seen the whole thing once and it's been quite a while. I didn't really hate it in general, but there was one part that kind of disturbed me.
spoiler[ Misato giving Shinji "an adult kiss." Wouldn't that make her a pedifile or something? I mean, she's TWICE his age. She could have been old enough to be his mother.  ]
