I am waiting for these animes to be licensed by someone. What do you guys think are the chances they will be licensed this year or sooner...

Hell Teacher Nube
Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu
Star Ocean EX
Full Moon Wa Sagashite

I suppose it all depends on the fanbase or something.

So you're gonna sell your collection and buy the rights yourself?

Nube: It's about... what, 8 years old now? Chances of it being licensed are getting dimmer. It might see a release with one of the smaller studios, but given that people want 'new' and there's plenty of 'new' and 'recent' shows that have yet to be licensed.. OTOH, Flame of Recca was licensed by Viz, and that's 7 years old. It's got increasingly limited potential.

Hare Nochi Guu: It's r, not l. Gah. Anywho, I'm surprised it hasn't been licensed yet. One would think that this sort of wacky, off-the-wall show would get the attention of ADV or Geneon. AN has the domain for e-mail purposes, but could easily license the title and release it instead. It's a 2001 series, which means the odds are still good that it'll be licensed.. So, yeah.

Star Ocean EX: See Hare nochi Guu. They're both from 2001.

Full Moon Wo Sagashite: From 2002. Potential for licensing is a lot higher than Guu and Star Ocean.. Comparatively, its chances would probably be approximate to the number of 2001... which is to say "half as likely as it was to be announced this year, but it's still got a few years of licensing potential left."

It'd be interesting to plot a graph of when anime was produced, and when it was licensed. I think we'd find that most licenses occur within 2 years of its broadcast in Japan... but that a small portion avoid licensing for a few more years. After 8 or so, though, I doubt there'd be much in the way of "new" licenses.. even 5-6 years is pushing things.

I did a quick count and tallied approximately 25 TV licenses from 2003, 10 from 2002, 10 from 2001, and 5 in 2000 (and 5 from 1999, maybe?) that were announced sometime last year. A more involved search would probably be able to nail down the exact trend better.

In the end, it looks like by 1999, there's a 50% chance of being licensed (or dubbed and released; we don't have Mon Colle Knights listed as "licensed" but it certainly WAS, given that it aired on Fox Kids, for instance. We're just lacking the specific company that did the work. Saban, I'd assume..)

So does the age of a series affect its probability to be licensed?

If so, I'd like to know if/when Tekkaman Blade might ever get re-licensed.

I think it just depends on the anime. I mean, if Astroboy the original was ever licensed which it will never be. I doubt a lot of people would watch it. But I think it just depends on the anime. Aura Battler Dumbine is old but got licensed. I also like this series a very lot.

TRSI (Right Stuf) bagan with this title some 16 years ago. It is still quite popular. My parents watched AstroBoy on tv (back in the day).

I'm not sure if it is inclusive to Australia (where I currently go to School), but Astroboy t-shirts, bags, cell phone cases, notebooks, etc are everywhere. It is its own fashion, used by young and old.

I don't know about the "older the less likely theory"..so many recent titles..or ones not too far down the line..are from shows that are approaching their 15th or higher b-day..cases in point receiving dvd coverage or "more of the series" in some form or another:
Saint Seiya:..getting the full dvd treatment...a recent new ova continuation{hades}..as well as a new movie.
Fist of the North Star: Getting..i believe..eventually...the whole dvd treatment.
Getter Robo: 1st of hopefully the other older ones
and so on....
I do see how these could be seen as exceptions...but...considering the massive backlog that companies have to work through...i really doubt the focus will ever shift to just annual anime. The only thing we have to worry about is some..or that some or the master copies of some of the older, perhaps more obscure ones..get destroyed and their message to the world lost...newer ones are hardier by today's standards..but 10 yrs from now...who knows.

Manga also released some dubbed episodes of the color Astro Boy anime from the 80s. I think Manga only released four or five volumes.
