Hmmm, that is curious. Perhaps, the license had so many years before the exiration date expired (it is possible that there was a requirement in the contract, in which, said item must be 'released' buy a certain date or suffer breach of contract).

I don't suppose anyone knows, WHO Media Blasters (aka AnimeWorks) 'acquired' the rights from?

Also, AnimeVillage originally released SMJ and SMJ Again, was it a subsidiary of Bandai, did Bandai buy it, or did AnimeVillage go under and Bandai nabbed the rights to their stuff?

AnimeVillage was a different label of Bandai, so it didn't need to get the rights again when SMJ and SMJ Again were released on dvd.
