I was under the impression that Black Lagoon #1 from Viz was gonna be priced at $9.99 like the other Viz titles (ANN has it listed for $9.99), but now I find out the price is $12.99. Did they jack up the price for the first volume??

I doubt it. It's Mature, and based off an anime not even on sale anymore, so....

I think that they just charge more for their mature titles, and if the first volume is $12.99 then the whole series will stay that price.

Nope. Golgo, Drifting Classroom, Monster were $10 each. Real seems to also fall in the $13 range, though, so maybe it's a new trend.

Real is $13 because it has bigger pages, color, and fancy things like cover flaps.

I'm assuming Black Lagoon might be similar?

Real is $13, because there isn't a huge demand for sports manga in the U.S., and because it's mature to boot.

But Black Lagoon is Mature stuff, but it has a semi-decent following here in the US. So why the major price discrepancies?

First Volume is $9.99, then it shoot up to $12.99 the next few volumes? For that kind of money, I'd expect it to be in the same format ala the older Viz Mangas with the completely rolling slide-scale pricing (i.e. Silent Mobius, Steam Detectives, etc.)

You're probably right about the format. The main reason for stuff like this is because it uses more paper.

I include a photo for price-size comparison. Of course, Del Rey has also been doing the same thing for a while now with their oversized "so you can see the boobs better" $12.95 line.

Honya: The anime has a semi-decent following, but not enough to save Geneon. Unless someone licenses it again any time soon, Viz is forced to wing it.

I prefer the "Cutting gushing blood smörgåsbords" than a pair of tits.

Well if they released Second Barrage perhaps it could've saved them. Still pretty pissed STARZ got to air it and all us fans got screwed out of DVD's.

I blame the economy and fact that only a small portion of people actually buy manga.

That's why Basilisk is so great; it has both.
