I've decided to finally get the original Macross on DVD, but there seems to be some controversy over which edition is better. From what I've read Anime Ego's version has better video and audio quality, and ADV's has better subtitle translation. Is this correct? Which version should I get?

Really? ADV's version has this whole extra feature complete with a splt-screen before and after of the intro about how they spent all this time cleaning up the video, and it's presented entirely in 5.1 surround. (IIRC)

Yeah, I have the ADV version (which is newer) of the Macrossseries and it looks and sounds amazing. It even has a dub unlike the Animego version which is sub only. Maybe you were looking at comparisons between ADV's initial Robotech DVDs (not the remastered or Protoculture Edition which were fixed) which did look pretty crappy and the ones from Animego.

ADV Version:
Pros:
Dubed
Remastered Video
5.1 Surround Sound

Cons:
No boxset yet

Animego Version:
Pros:
The 3 boxes will probabally sell cheaper than buying all 7 ADV DVDs

Cons:
These versions are out of print and may be hard to find
Sub Only

Basically, it comes down to what's more important to you, quality or price.

ADV like Funimation tend to convert everything into 5.1 for their English track. They really didn't put much effort in "remixing" the audio like the Cowboy Bebop or Eva Platinum remixes (or a 5.1 series like Elfen Leid , Champloo, or Gungrave) which have encasing sound. In general music and sound are pulled to the L/R tracks and the center is isolated for dialog. Since Macross was mono this is a bit better than what Pro Logic II or Neo 6 can interpolate but isn't much of a better job than what your receiver would do with a stereo source.

The ADV Macross does have some nice extras and interviews. They are a must if you are an IIjima fan since they include her in concert, interviewed and on audio commentary.

Alright, I must have misread reviews of Robotech as being of Macross. I think I'll mass buy the ADV version next month then. Thanks.

This old thread has some good info.

Basically if you want a better sounding Japanese dub then the Animego version is for you. They're pretty much equal in all other respects. Except one has an English dub, and some neat extras.

I own the ADV version by the way.

So the audio on the ADV one is messed up? I may get this then.

I wouldn't say it was "messed up". It is just that the Animego version used a higher quality source for the Japanese dub. So it probably will sound as good as an 80's television cartoon ever will. If you care nothing about English dubs then that version is probably for you, because as far as video quality they are equal.

If you want an English dub and a few more extras, then the ADV version is the way to go. And I think the audio on the English track sounds great, so don't confuse that with what I am saying.
