Ok, I totally looked for a Samurai 7 thread to post this question in, but didn't find one. I looked in the Anime Discussion sticky, as well as outright searched it in the forum engine-ma-bob, but alas, I've come up empty handed. But my question must be answered.

I once bought all of Samurai 7 but had to sell it for money. I only got through the first DVD, and I plan on re-buying it, but as of now am just watching a dubbed copy (I know, bad me). But for those of you who have watched the first DVD (dubbed or subbed) spoiler[are there gay undertones between Kambei and Kyuzo] or am I just seeing things? Is this a result of me watching it dubbed?

Just wondering if it's just me. Not a bad series so far, though. Definitely has picked up.

Undertones, like the spoiler["I think I'm in love... with your fighting style"] line? I don't really think so.

To me, it looks like a pretty typical spoiler["I'm the only one who's allowed to kill you" obsession. ] Also, I don't think it's more noticeable in the dub than the sub; if you're looking for it, it's still there.

Shounen animes are full of undertones, specially the old ones with their almost entire male cast. Ussually, the shounen main character has an obsession with his antagonist or an inconditional loyalty to his friend. These deep bounds between men can be interpreted as undertones but it doesn`t mean an approach to shounen ai, it`s a idealization of friendship and masculinity. Very few shounen characters are truly gays, when a character become too weird, usually he develope a relationship with a girl. I think that nobody should be surprised by Samurai 7`s innocent phrase, there are moments a lot more explicit in other shounens.

Activates Gaydar

Hmmm...Wait a minute! Is that???

Nope, just a speck of dust.

Deactivates Gaydar

Kidding aside, there are quite a few anime I've seen which have characters who are gay, bi or have relationships that are deliberately left hazy enough to let viewers draw their own conclusions, but I really don't think this was one of them. I agree with Dorcas Aurelia's interpretation.

To be honest, those are the last two characters I would consider spoiler[likley to expressing any gay understones to each other.]

Its an interesting observation, but in a word, I'd say its a pretty firm no.

No. As others have mentioned, it is quite common in Shounen series for characters to act like that, and it almost never is an indication of homosexuality.

Gundam 00 goes even further, with spoiler[Graham even saying that he loves Exia (and later, Setsuna, it seems).]

Back to Samurai Seven, I do wish that they had developed Kyuzo's character more. He seemed worthy, and interesting. I like his fighting technique, and no, I too am not gay.

The same comment is made in the movie the series is based off of. I think it's just a sign of respect.

[in response to all the responses]

Ok, I hear ya. The spoiler["I want him"] comment just through me off. The spoiler["in love"] comment seemed like the normal obsession-only I can kill him-smart-alec-ness.
