In truth I believe anime is a very important teaching tool for children. Animation is probably the first medium that kids are exposed too, and if it carries positive themes and good lessons then they have a positive effect on the child's psyche.
However at my age anime is primarily a tool that gets me out of touch with reality and lets me experience a wide array of emotions that I can not from other mediums. At this point it has exhausted all its lessons on me, and I primarily focus on more mature anime, but even those still carry important mature messages that can not be expressed to kids, however I've come to realize they almost never apply to the real world.
So my answer is that anime does not teach me anything relevant to real life.

Even though I know can see they're not really the best Anime out there, I think Dragonball, Pokemon and Digimon influenced me a lot. They are teaching very basic lessons, however, other books and stuff did that, too. This applies to every anime I really learned something from, being it the "there is no good and evil" from Escaflowne or the "It's okay to live in your own world" from Evangelion - I got that from books at that time, before or after that, too.
For the "today", I can basically agree with ShadowTrader, the "lessons" the anime I watch now try to tell almost never apply to the real world, so, Anime doesn't teach me anything anymore.

Anime's taught me a lot of things that have changed me in more ways than one.
Anime's taught me to be stronger, wiser and more careful about others' feelings.
It's also taught me the value of friendship, and about surpassing odds to reach the top.
It's inspired me to never let go until I've reached my goal.
Pretty emo, huh?
