GAME: Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land

So to my knowledge (I've been playing these games since Rorona), the first time they used the open world format was Atelier Firis. Which is my second favorite game in the series with Escha and Logy being my all time favorite.

I've been looking forward to Yumia for a while and I hope it maintains the audience that was brought in with the Ryza games.

I will say that I am not a fan of them sticking with real time combat as I have loved the past games that used it pure turn based and I always found the battles in the Ryza games to be not as polished as any of the previous series combat systems. My fave combat system was the one in Shallie as I felt it was the most refined in the entire franchise.

A little wary of this because generally not a fan of open world games and think Firis didn't really do a great job of translating an open world to the Atelier formula, but it can't be denied they have a lot more money now to do better on a do-over

Yeah, the battle system for the second Atelier Sophie game (which I also reviewed) also felt a lot more fun and scratched the "puzzle-solving" section of my brain with its turn-based system and the switching mechanic. I think Yumia has a good foundation for a combat system (it has some shadows of the old Valkyrie Profile Silmeria combat system), but it needs a bit of TLC.

I also hope that Yumia manages to keep the Atelier franchise's popularity. Yumia herself feels a little like they're trying to give onlookers a honeypot (she's got the beauty mark under her eye and the long legs and high heels), but that kind of thing has never really been the main appeal of the Atelier series. Yumia has good back-and-forth with her party members. And the cast is really fun! There's a lot to love here.

For my money: wandering around aimlessly felt good. "Ooh, I found a relic. Ooh, I found a shrine. Ooh, I found a new ruin to explore." Someone who enjoys taking the scenic route has a lot to enjoy.

Your use of the word "bespoke" had me thinking a certain Princess Bride reference, especially the last one (as few Atelier protagonists stay the lead character in sequels).

Anyway, I'm still disappointed that the series has remained in a post-Dusk shift to appealing to a general JRPG audience, but at least this sounds like a stronger start than Ryza.

I was waiting for a review before I placed my order, so thanks, Jean-Karlo! BTW, Sony playstation.com says this game is for PS4 & PS5, which is good because I do not have a PS5.

The Dusk Sea trilogy was pretty dark, but also my favorite. The possibility of the future destruction of the world because of alchemy (or rather the misuse of alchemy) is not new to the series. I am intrigued and looking forward to playing Yumia, despite its not having turn-based combat. (Arthritis and carpal tunnel make lots of rapid button mashing painful for me.)

I've been interested in this for a while. I've never played any atelier games before, but if I've understood it right they're all standalone trilogies right? I could just jump in here?

Yeah this is a brand new world for this series, so you can just jump straight in. I will say if you are interested in any of the earlier games, that you can pick whichever ones that appeal to you. The games give you enough onboarding information to understand what's going on.

Not to mention she's the oldest one they've done so far in her debut game. Like you said, Sophie and Ryza are similar age, but it took them multiple games to get out of teenagehood, compared to Yumia who's already a clumsy girl in her early 20's.

Yeah, the Atelier trilogies are all stand-alone. You don't need to know anything about Ryza's games to play Sophie's, and you don't need to have played either of those games to play Yumia's. And the lore doesn't really carry over, either. The best part is that the systems all vary throughout the titles, so each Atelier game (Sophie, Ryza, Yumie, and beyond) have unique mechanics for item synthesis and the battle system. So if you're looking for a good place to jump in, yeah, Yumia is a great place to start. And if you're not entirely sold on Yumia, you're encouraged to go back and try one of the other games--it might have the right balance you're looking for.

The promotional material gave the impression that Yumia was, to use a phrase, a bit more MILF-coded. She's instead a slightly older take on the passionate-but-clumsy Atelier protagonist (with a bit of a melancholy streak, what with the discrimination).
