Episode 6 is the start of a new arc and it is a doozy. When things appear too good to be true that is usually the case and boy did things go from slice of life fluff to reality horror quickly. Part of the gang is stuck in a happy seeming world/painting while the painter in question is cutting away (literally) when things are not as she thinks they should be. My guess is that Nene/Kou need to convince the rest of the gang that the world is fake in order to be able to do something.
Great season so far.

This arc is really making the choice between staying in a perfect seeming fake world and fighting to go back to a very flawed real world a hard one. You can promise to fix the issues in the real world all you want but when said issues have no solution that just sounds foolhardy/naive. It also makes for a lot of bittersweet what could have been moments.

Episode 9
Man, this arc is really dragging on. Which is too bad because I'm not really enjoying it on an emotional or fun level. It doesn't help that Mitsuba is an important chunk of it and he's always been my least favourite character. I guess maybe what's bumming me out is that in this fictional world nothing is being done or can be done about the real issue: Nene's impending death. Conceptually speaking, we are just spinning wheels here. On a purely intellectual level I can appreciate what's going on, but I'm not vibing with the arc on a fun, entertainment level. Not much point in hoping it wraps up next week I guess because with only 3 episodes left in the cours it seems like this will probably play out until the end.

Maybe, maybe not, the show has short arcs and even episodes with half episode segments such as Mokke of the Dead.
I get the arc being hit or miss though, it almost feels slice of life in nature with very little supernatural action.

I disagree. If it were mostly slice of life I could probably relax and just enjoy that aspect. But for me, my nerves are constantly being jangled what with Nene and Exorcist Boy being urged to kill Hanako and Mitsuba, the constant desire to escape from this fake world and so on. Mind you, now that Hanako has finally dorpped his Amane act, that helps things for me, oddly enough. It takes things in a new direction instead of watching Amane reacting as if he is still alive and oblivious to what's really going on. You are certainly correct that the show has done short arcs before but since the earliest this one could wrap up is next week, that would leave only 2 episodes left and it's hard to imagine them doing a new story after taking so much time with this one. Could happen, I guess.
