Yes, the show is clearly determined to try and differentiate from the standard Isekai, and this episode does a great job. Its now a multi-level story and its much better placed to play into the old man with family dynamic that was already a clear strength. I don't know how it will go but this is an Isekai thats at least given some thought to what an interesting portal fantasy means.
We also get a rapid fire history of Isekai anime back to Aura Battler and beyond, certainly relevant to some discussions on the forums recently... |

Yeah, Episode 04 escalated the show up a notch, for me. Not only are dad and daughter otaku, but even mom is one. In addition to daughter realizing dad is stuck in the game, instead of freaking out or even disbelieving, mom unloads a whole magazine of isekai-title-bullets from her otaku-uzi-mouth to triple the amount of meta. And daughter even got to use god-hand abilities to make a dragon in the game for villainess-dad. The whole concept for this title is brilliant, and we're only a quarter of the way through the (presumably) first season. It makes me curious just how far they go, with the manga being only 7 volumes, right now. I mean, how much cooler can it get?
At any rate, this show is awesome. More people should check it out. |

It's weird and kind of amazing that my question of who's playing the game wasn't answered. But I think the gameplayer was the one who asked the family for help....
The joys and pains of manga adaptations, on the plus side there's no "the is the end of the first novel" moments after which the story has to sluggishly restart but then there's always the possibility that this stuff will never come up. The author came up with at least enough material for seven volumes... I know the daughter said the beast summoning was the first step of many they'll have to do or rather sit through... Duality, two natures crossed, being at opposite ends of that love combability circle and here's something that comes to my mind every time I see the name "Auvergne": aubergine. Eggplant. Oh my. |

My first guess would've been the daughter was playing the game. But when she got the call about her dad being in the hospital, then came back and saw the game was already up on the screen and noticed it wasn't responding to the controller, and the fact that the game even asked her if she wanted to help, it makes me wonder that maybe the game has some kind of sentience or is being controlled by some otherworldly force? If the former were the case, this is definitely sounding like TRON, now, if TRON were disguised as an otome game. |

Merging what was already a pretty successful foruma with what is essentially the core gimmick from "Endo and Kobayashi Live!" gives this show the potential to be one of the best examples of it's genre. Everything about this episode is genius, while also maintaining its existing strong fundamentals in great timing and better-than-expected visuals.
I loved the little chibi dolls that Grace/Kenzaburou summons. I loved the scenes of our family of otakus and their special interest rants. Mom and daughter just rolling with the whole "Dad's consciousness is in the TV!" thing because isekai is just a basic fact of life as far as they're concerned. "Do I want to help my Dad? Of course I do!" (No questions asked up front about what exactly would be demanded by the weirdly sentient TV/Game in order to do this). They're such a sweet family unit. Them suffering through his Dad jokes and being "yep, that's definitely him!". Half an hour very well spent! [Edit - Oh, and I forgot to add: I guess the fact that Grace's monster summoning resulted in two "mana forms" that needed to be merged into a dual-attribute adorable little dragon adds weight to the idea that both Grace and Kenzaburou are present in some way in her body.] |

As for who is actually playing the game and how the of magic of the TV being taken over, etc, has come about... it wouldn't shock me if we eventually get the answers to these questions in a satisfying way. That would be in keeping with the show as it has unspooled so far.

Man, wouldn't it be something if the personalities started battling over control of the body? That would make the show even more nuts. Or what if the voice/player of the game is actually Grace's disembodied spirit trying to finish the game so she can get full control of her body back? |

All interesting possibilities! I think we might not get battling personalities since we haven't seen a hint of that yet and I wonder with last episodes' glimpse into Grace's past that she might like to see how her life can be lived differently and how it turns out with someone who is more like she used to be and didn't have the traumatic indoctrination she had. She might change for the better voluntarily...

Episode 07
So after last week's episode, I decided to Google the ending, Matsuken Samba II, thinking I had heard that name somewhere before, then discovered the original song by Matsudaira Ken (Matsu-Ken, get it?). I think I was confusing the song with another one, but found a lot of information about the actor/singer and the song, anyway. Apparently, the song is a big hit all over Japan, and the original version is even catchier than the mix used for the series. In fact, the song is so popular, it even has its own Wikipedia page. Concerning the latest episode, it was funny to see Kenzaburou out-dad Leopold, and even give him some inadvertent dad lessons who, by the way, is voiced by the ever-great Akio Ohtsuka. It's cool to hear him in more comedic roles these days, as I always have and will associate him with badass Batou from Ghost in the Shell. Grace certainly didn't get her former bad habits from him, so now I'm curious to see the rest of her family and how that dynamic could've affected her upbringing. The weight gain by Anna was also a nice wake up call for me. I usually try to workout with the program P90X, at least once a year, as it's really great at building/maintaining muscle and keeping my metabolism a little higher. The program itself lasts 3 months, and I usually manage to do two out of the three months per year. But I was so busy, tired, and depressed the last year, I only got to do one month in 2024 (also stress-eating a lot of junk food). I'm about 20 lbs. over my goal (150 lbs., and I'm 5'6"). |

Ep 8
Something is going on with the real Grace. We don't really know what, but its a good set up for the future. The character work is all fine but the almost standard "feudal-derived aristocracies are a social good, actually!" material is one of my least favourite parts of Isekai and especially Villainess works. No, it wasn't and its not. But its ok, they usually only do it once. Just stick to the character stuff and like in Austen just ignore the deep social inequities (helped here by the social norms for interactions between classes being incredibly egalitarian compared to the societies they are borrowing the tropes from). |

To tell you the truth, when we saw the dream scene of the "real" Grace in a cage and then waking up in bed, I thought that she had re-asserted her control over the shared body and would be acting like the "old" Grace. That would have been interesting from a story point of view, but I'm glad they didn't go there because it would have harshed the chill vibe that I dig.
And Eilavel, I have to disagree with you strongly... feudal-derived aristocracies WERE a social good... erm, assuming you belonged to the nobility, of course. ![]() |

It's better than the US and most capitalistic countries right now. "We agree there is among us there a class above ours" with social movement versus one without. At least Nobility answers the question of "you and what army?" with "mine". We destroyed the noble caste and then the robber barons only to willingly agree with technofeudalism. "You are better than us, Elon Musk!" I wonder if it's going to come up in the show. So far they're only pointing out similarities such as "isn't it weird how a salaryman's subservience can function in a feudal society" but the set up is there for his daughter who has more time on her hands than should be possible. |
